 The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is the largest
fundraising event in the nation.
 More than 4 million people will participate in one of the over
5,000 Relay For Life events this year.

American Cancer Society Support Programs & Resources

www.cancer.org and 800-ACS-2345 – Resources that serve as the starting point to provide
information on cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and quality of life. Trained
professionals help guide patients and their families to the diverse resources available to them. This
website and call center provides information 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Road To Recovery – The Road to Recovery program provides transportation to cancer patients.
Volunteers drive cancer patients to and from treatment. Last year, 1,834 rides were given in King
County.
✰
Look Good…Feel Better – Helps patients address the appearance-related side effects of cancer
treatment so they can regain a sense of self-confidence and control over their lives. Group
programs are available for women where licensed cosmetologists provide skin care, head
coverings, and makeup tips to women undergoing cancer treatment. 220 women took part in a Look
Good… Feel Better class, in King County last year.

Patient Lodging – For cancer patients who must travel to receive treatment, hotel partners of the
American Cancer Society provide a temporary home away from home for both patients and their
caregivers. Lodging is free of charge. Last year 136 rooms were provided in King County.

Patient Navigator – Assists patients, families, and caregivers in navigating systems needed
throughout the cancer journey such as medical, financial, social, and emotional systems. Locally,
Patient Navigators are located at:

Summer Camps – Camp UKANDU and Camp Goodtimes, are the Society’s free, week long
summer camps for children with cancer. These camps are equipped to handle the special needs of
children undergoing treatment. Camp Goodtimes West, held at Camp Burton on Vashon Island,
hosted 225 campers over two weeks in 2012

“tlc Catalog” – “tlc” is a magazine and catalog that combines helpful articles and information with
products for women coping with cancer or any cancer treatment that causes hair loss. Products
include wigs, hairpieces, breast forms, prostheses, bras, hats, turbans, swimwear, and helpful
accessories at the lowest possible prices.

Gift Closets - Local American Cancer Society gift closets provide free wigs and free breast
prostheses for women undergoing cancer treatment. In King County, 953 of these items
were provided free of charge to cancer survivors last year.

Cancer Survivors Network – Created by and for cancer survivors and their families to help them
share their experiences and offer hope to others through personal stories, discussion groups and
personal web pages. It can be accessed by visiting csn.cancer.org.

I Can Cope Online – I Can Cope Online offers free online, anytime classes for adults with cancer
and their loved ones. These classes help people learn about cancer, treatment, eating healthy and,
treating cancer pain,
2013 Relay For Life of Kent Event Information
Relay For Life of Kent
As one of the largest Relay events in King County, the Relay For Life of Kent brings
together over 1,000 members of the community annually to Celebrate, Remember and
Fight Back. This event has raised over $2 million, since 2000, for the American Cancer
Society.
It is a great opportunity to bring people together to celebrate survivorship while raising
funds for the American Cancer Society. This year the goal is to again raise $200,000
and have a minimum of 75 teams and 1,000 individuals participating.
