Why support the
American Cancer Society?
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary
health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem
by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer,
through research, education, advocacy, and services.
The American Cancer Society hopes to achieve the following goals by the year 2015:
 Reduce the cancer incidence rate by 25%
 Reduce the cancer mortality rate by 50%
 Measurably improve the quality of life for those affected by cancer
The American Cancer Society Patient Services Programs provide a wide range of services
and programs for patients and their family members at no direct cost.
 822 cancer received Personal Health Managers, enabling them and their caregivers to
take control of their health care at an estimated $28,770 value
 368 Women who were newly diagnosed with breast cancer received a one-on-one
visit from a survivor through our Reach to Recovery Program at an estimated
$27,600 value
 482 rides were provided for cancer patients to their life-saving cancer treatments at
an estimated $14,460 value
 135 women who underwent surgery for breast cancer received a permanent breast
prosthesis and fitting through the Breast Prosthesis Project at an estimated $33,750
value
 223 women undergoing cancer treatment learned techniques to help them manage the
treatment effects as well as received support through our Look Good…Feel Better
Program at an estimated $36,795 value.
 95 equipment items were provided to cancer patients to assist them during their
cancer experience at an estimated $27,550 value
 274 women undergoing chemotherapy received wigs at an estimated $13,700 value
60 Researchers at Texas Medical Institutions received grants totaling over $32 million.
In Houston, 15 researchers are being funded at a total of $7,110,500



Relay For Life is the national signature event for the
American Cancer Society. More than just a fundraiser,
the event brings together families and friends to
celebrate those who survived cancer and to remember
those who did not, as well as to fight back against a
disease that has robbed many of so much.
