Growing Illiteracy
• “Once upon a time Asians came to the
Philippines to avail themselves of top quality
education.”
• “For the last 10 years out of 15 million high
school graduates 10.5 million were not able to
enter college.”
• Per Report of Dep-Ed “ It is estimated that 5.2
million Filipinos are illiterate.”
• “The country also has one of the highest drop
out rates in Asia, worse than Indonesia and
Vietnam.”
• “The growing decline of college students would
take its toll on the economy and has adversely
affected national competitiveness based on
international surveys.”
• “Development is accelerated in countries that
give priority in educating their citizens.”
• “Emerging economic powers including China
and India are investing heavily in education,
providing their people with the tools they need
to excel in a highly competitive environment.”
• “Countries that do not treat education with
the same urgency risk being left behind.”
• “In the Philippines, educators themselves are
sounding the alarm. It would be folly to ignore
the warning.”
