Exploring Canaan
13 The LORD said to Moses, 2 “Send some men to
explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the
Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its
leaders.”
3 So at the LORD’s command Moses sent them out
from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders
of the Israelites. 4 These are their names:
from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zakkur;
5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;
6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;
7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;
8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;
9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;
10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;
11 from the tribe of Manasseh (a tribe of Joseph),
Gaddi son of Susi;
12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli;
13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;
14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;
15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki.

How did the scouts describe the land of Canaan?
NUMBERS 13
25 When
they returned from spying out the land, at the
end of forty days, 26 they proceeded to come to Moses
and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of
Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; and they
brought back word to them and to all the congregation
and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 Thus they told
him, and said, “We went in to the land where you sent
us; and it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and
this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless, the people who live in
the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and
very large;
How would you have felt after hearing about
Canaan?
Would you have decided to march into the land?
Why or why not?
NUMBERS 13
30
Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and
said, “We should by all means go up and take
possession of it, for we will surely overcome it.” 31 But
the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not
able to go up against the people, for they are too strong
for us.”
NUMBERS 14
Then all the congregation lifted up their voices and
cried, and the people wept that night. 2 All the sons of
Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron; and the
whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had
died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in
this wilderness! 3 Why is the LORD bringing us into this
land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little
ones will become plunder; would it not be better for
us to return to Egypt?” 4 So they said to one another,
“Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt.”
NUMBERS 14
6 Joshua
the son of Nun and Caleb the son of
Jephunneh, of those who had spied out the land, tore
their clothes; 7 and they spoke to all the congregation of
the sons of Israel, saying, “The land which we passed
through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the
LORD is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this
land and give it to us—a land which flows with milk
and honey. 9 Only do not rebel against the LORD; and
do not fear the people of the land, for they will be our
prey. Their protection has been removed from them,
and the LORD is with us; do not fear them.” 10 But all the
congregation said to stone them with stones.
Why were Joshua and Caleb ready to march on
Canaan, even though the other Israelites were
filled with fear?
10 But
all the congregation said to stone
them with stones. Then the glory of the
LORD appeared in the tent of meeting to
all the sons of Israel.
The "tent of meeting" is
another name used for
the Jewish tabernacle
that was built as a place
of worship for the people
of Israel during their 40year wilderness journey
after leaving Egypt
("tabernacle" means
tent). The design or
pattern for this tent of
meeting was given to
Moses by the Lord on
Mount Sinai (Exodus 25—
27).
What decision did the Israelites make?
Once they made that decision what was God’s
response? Why did he give such response?
NUMBERS 14
11 The LORD
said to Moses, “How long will
this people spurn Me? And how long will
they not believe in Me, despite all the
signs which I have performed in their
midst? 12 I will smite them with
[e]pestilence and dispossess them, and I
will make you into a nation greater and
mightier than they.”
What was Moses’ response to God?
Numbers:
17 But
now, I pray, let the power of the Lord be great,
just as You have declared, 18 ‘The LORD is slow to
anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving
iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means
clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on
the children to the third and the fourth generations.’
19 Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people
according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness,
just as You also have forgiven this people, from
Egypt even until now.”
Did God pardon the congregation after
Moses interceded for them?
NUMBERS 14
20 So
the LORD said, “I have pardoned them
according to your word; 21 but indeed, as I
live, all the earth will be filled with the
glory of the LORD.
What did the Israelites suffer
because of their sins?
NUMBERS 14
22 Surely
all the men who have seen My glory and
My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the
wilderness, yet have put Me to the test these ten
times and have not listened to My voice, 23 shall
by no means see the land which I swore to their
fathers, nor shall any of those who spurned Me
see it.
Does this tell us that nobody
among them who were in
Exodus ever entered the
Land of Canaan?
NUMBERS 14
30Surely
you shall not come into the land in which I
swore to settle you, except Caleb the son of
Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 Your
children, however, whom you said would become a
prey—I will bring them in, and they will know the
land which you have rejected.
NUMBERS 1432 But as for you, your
corpses will fall in this wilderness.
33 Your sons shall be shepherds for forty
years in the wilderness, and they will
suffer for your unfaithfulness, until your
corpses lie in the wilderness.
.
NUMBERS 14
39 When
Moses spoke these words to all
the sons of Israel, the people mourned
greatly. 40 In the morning, however, they
rose up early and went up to the ridge of
the hill country, saying, “Here we are; we
have indeed sinned, but we will go up to
the place which the LORD has promised.”
Did Moses agree for people to go to the
land of promise?
NUMBERS 14
41 But
Moses said, “Why then are you
transgressing the commandment of the LORD,
when it will not succeed? 42 Do not go up, or
you will be struck down before your enemies,
for the LORD is not among you. 43 For the
Amalekites and the Canaanites will be there in
front of you, and you will fall by the sword, in
as much as you have turned back from
following the LORD. And the LORD will not be
with you.”
Did the people listen to Moses’ warning
not to go otherwise they will be struck
down by enemies?
NUMBERS 14
44 But
they went up heedlessly to the ridge of
the hill country; neither the ark of the
covenant of the LORD nor Moses left the camp.
45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who
lived in that hill country came down, and
struck them and beat them down as far as
Hormah.

Can you recall two ways in which God provided
for his complaining people?
Exodus 16 The whole Israelite community set
out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin,
which is between Elim and Sinai, on the
fifteenth day of the second month after they
had come out of Egypt. 2 In the desert the
whole community grumbled against Moses
and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If
only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt!
There we sat around pots of meat and ate all
the food we wanted, but you have brought us
out into this desert to starve this entire
assembly to death.”

only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt!
There we sat around pots of meat and ate all
the food we wanted, but you have brought us

Exodus 16: 13 That
evening quail
came and covered the camp,
and in the morning there was
a layer of dew around the
camp. 14 When the dew was
gone, thin flakes like frost on
the ground appeared on the
desert floor. 15 And when the
children of Israel saw it, they
said one to another, It is
manna: for they wist not what
it was. And Moses said unto
them, this is the bread which
the LORD hath given you to
eat.
Exodus 17 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of
Sin, traveling from place to place as the LORD commanded. They
camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.
Exodus 17 So they quarreled with Moses and
said, “Give us water to drink.”
Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me?
Why do you put the LORD to the test?”
3 But the people were thirsty for water there,
and they grumbled against Moses. They said,
“Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to
make us and our children and livestock die of
thirst?”
Exodus 17: 5 The LORD
answered Moses, “Go out
in front of the people.
Take with you some of the
elders of Israel and take in
your hand the staff with
which you struck the Nile,
and go. 6 I will stand there
before you by the rock at
Horeb. Strike the rock, and
water will come out of it
for the people to drink.”
So Moses did this in the
sight of the elders of Israel.
Numbers 20 In the first month the whole Israelite
community arrived at the Desert of Zin, and they stayed
at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.2 Now there
was no water for the community, and the people gathered
in opposition to Moses and Aaron.
Numbers 20:
3 They
quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we
had died when our brothers fell dead before the
LORD! 4 Why did you bring the LORD’s community into
this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die
here? 5 Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this
terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or
pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!”
Numbers 20:
6 Moses
and Aaron went from the assembly to the
entrance to the tent of meeting and fell facedown,
and the glory of the LORD appeared to them. 7 The
LORD said to Moses, 8 “Take the staff, and you and
your brother Aaron gather the assembly together.
Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour
out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for
the community so they and their livestock can
drink.”
What had God wanted to do at the rock at Meribah?
God wanted to show his glory and
loving care for His people.
How did Moses show a lack of faith at Meribah?
If you re-read Numbers
20:7-8, the Lord
commanded them to
to speak to the rock
and told them that it
would bring forth
water.
Numbers 20: 7 The LORD said
to Moses, 8 “Take the
staff, and you and your
brother Aaron gather
the assembly together.
Speak to that rock
before their eyes and it
will pour out its water.
You will bring water out
of the rock for the
community so they and
their livestock can

them (Ex. 17:5–7).
Numbers 20:10 He
and Aaron gathered the assembly together
in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you
rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?”
Moses did not honor God. “Must we bring you
water…” That’s how Moses put it to the people.
Moses did not honor God as holy. His actions made
it look like Moses was the one with the power, not
the holy God.
In other words, they decided to
ignore the Lord’s request and go with
what had worked before, and Moses
spoke as if he doubted the Lord’s
unfailing love; which demonstrated a
lack of faith (Num. 20:12)
Why and How did God punish Aaron and
Moses?
12 But
the LORD said to Moses and
Aaron, “Because you did not trust
in me enough to honor me as holy
in the sight of the Israelites, you
will not bring this community into
the land I give them.”
27 Moses
did as the
LORD commanded:
They went up Mount
Hor in the sight of the
whole community.
28 Moses removed
Aaron’s garments and
put them on his son
Eleazar. And Aaron
died there on top of
the mountain.
Deuteronomy 34:4 Then
the LORD
said to him, “This is the land I
promised on oath to
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
when I said, ‘I will give it to
your descendants.’ I have let
you see it with your eyes, but
you will not cross over into
it.”
Deuteronomy 34 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from
the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from
Jericho. There the LORD showed him the whole land…
5 And
Moses the servant
of the LORD died there in
Moab, as the LORD had
said.
7 Moses was a hundred
and twenty years old
when he died, yet his eyes
were not weak nor his
strength gone. 8 The
Israelites grieved for
Moses in the plains of
Moab thirty days, until
the time of weeping and
mourning was over.
Deuteronomy
34:10 Since then,
no prophet has
risen in Israel like
Moses, whom the
LORD knew face to

those signs and
wonders the LORD
sent him to do in
Egypt—to Pharaoh

St. Gregory describes another reason to mourn:

The more one ascends in meditation of
Divine Truth, Beauty, and Goodness,
and then realize
the poverty of human nature,
man can only be left in sorrow.
UN
When one contemplates that we were made in the

one can only mourn

But the sentence continues that

Mourning in this context is called a blessing, because
mourning our fallen nature creates in us a desire to
improve ourselves and to do what is right!
St. Gregory of Nyssa taught that the Beatitudes
build one upon another.
Let us recall the first Beatitude’s virtue.
Humility
or
being
humble
________________________
is the realization that all your gifts and blessings
come from the grace of God.
http://jesuschristsavior.net/Beatitudes.html
A humble person becomes meek, or becomes
gentle and kind,
and exhibits a docility of spirit,
even in the face of adversity and
hardship.
Who are the meek?
The meek are those who:
• act tenderly towards their neighbor,
• bear patiently with neighbor’s defects,
• accept the offenses and injuries they
receive from neighbor without
contention, resentment, or vengeance.
Meekness
__________________
is the virtue that moderates/controls anger.
It is the control of every unreasonable
resentment at another person's character or
behavior.
"Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth.“
St. Augustine advises us to be meek in the face of
the Lord, and not resist but be obedient to him.
Obedience and submission to the will of God will
bring one peace in this world and in the next.
Deuteronomy 28 :1-2
“Now it shall be, if you diligently obey
the LORD your God, being careful to do
all His commandments which I command
you today, the LORD your God will set
you high above all the nations of the
earth. 2 All these blessings will come
upon you and overtake you if you obey
the LORD your God”.
"Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, for they shall be satisfied."
Righteousness is from Greek word
“dikaiosyne”, meaning rightness,
quality of rightness or
justice

rights
Justice, then, respects the ________ of others.
whether those rights are
• natural (the right to life, the rights that arise because
of our natural obligations to family and kin, the most
fundamental property rights, the right to worship God
and to do what is necessary to save our souls) or
• legal (contract rights, constitutional rights, civil rights).
What are the things,
people hunger and thirst for?
Many people hunger and thirst for
• Power
• Fame
• Money
• Beauty
• Sexuality
There are, however, those who long for God.
These are the people who are not just
interested or satisfied by worldly things or
pleasures.
What does it mean to
‘hunger and thirst for righteousness’?
It is not seeking
self
_______-righteousness,
but it is the righteousness
that comes from
God
_______.
And those who will seek
him, will find him and will
be filled.
So then, righteousness
of God is available
through faith in Jesus
Christ to all who believe
in Him.
Jesus himself claimed
to be the one who will
quench the thirst.
John 7:37: “If
any man thirst,
let him come
unto me and
drink.”
It is not mere observance of the law
(Matthew 5:20 For I tell you that unless your
righteousness surpasses that of the
Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you
will certainly not enter the kingdom of
heaven).
….. but rather an expression of
brotherly love
I John 3:10 This is how we know who
the children of God are and who the
children of the devil are: Anyone who
does not do what is right is not God’s
child, nor is anyone who does not love
their brother and sister.
Mercy
_______________
is the loving disposition towards those who
suffer distress.
Love, compassion, and forgiveness towards
one's neighbor will bring peace in your
relationships.
We say in the Lord's Prayer:
Forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass
against us.
As we are merciful to others, so our
Heavenly Father will be merciful with us!
As we are merciful
to others, so our
Heavenly Father
will be merciful
with us!
Jesus reminds us
that whatever
"you did to the
least of my
brethren, you did
it to me (Matthew
25:31-46)."
There are 2 Works of Mercy we can do that
extend God’s compassion and mercy to
those in need.

Who are the pure/clean of heart?
Being pure in heart involves having a
singleness of heart toward God.
http://www.gotquestions.org/pure-in-heart.html
A pure heart has no hypocrisy, no
guile, no hidden motives.
http://www.gotquestions.org/pure-in-heart.html
The pure heart is marked by
transparency and an uncompromising
desire to please God in all things.
http://www.gotquestions.org/pure-in-heart.html
A pure heart is more than an external
purity of behavior;
it is an internal purity of soul.
http://www.gotquestions.org/pure-in-heart.html
The only way we can be truly pure in heart is
to give our lives to Jesus and ask Him to do
the cleansing work.
Psalm 51:10
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and
renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
God is the one who makes our hearts pure –
by the sacrifice of His Son and through His
sanctifying work in our lives
To be pure of heart is to relate to others and
the world in a way that respects and honors
the full dignity, value, and destiny of every
person and everything.
To be pure of heart is to see others as God
sees them. Purity of heart would have us
loving others with their good (and not our
own) in mind.
To be pure of heart means to be free of all
selfish intentions and self-seeking desires.
1 John 3:1-3
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that
we should be called children of God! And that is what we
are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did
not know him.
3
2 Dear
friends, now we are children of God, and what we
will be has not yet been made known.
But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like
him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this
hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be
called children of God.“
Peacemakers not only live peaceful lives but also
try to bring peace and friendship to others, and to
preserve peace between God and man.
True peace goes hand in hand with
justice

It is not merely the absence of war or the fragile
exhaustion that exists in the aftermath of conflict,
when lives have been torn apart, relationships
broken, infrastructures destroyed and homes
demolished.

Rather, the God-given peace that our creator
desires for us, and to which live simply calls us, is
built on justice, where everything and everyone in
the created order is in right relationship with each
other and can reach their God-given potential.

St. Gregory of Nyssa calls a peacemaker a
man who brings peace to another; but one
cannot give another what one does not
possess oneself.
Hence the Lord wants you first to be yourself
filled with the blessings of peace and then to
communicate it to those who have need of it. By
imitating God's love of man, the peacemakers
become children of God.
"Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of
righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven."
persecuted
To be _____________________ is to
to be treated by someone cruelly or unfairly especially
because of race or religious or political beliefs
to be constantly annoyed or bothered by someone
"Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of
righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven."
The biblical passage continues to elaborate: "Blessed are
you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all
kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice
and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so
men persecuted the prophets who were before you"
(Matthew 5:11-12).
Stephen, Peter and Paul, nearly all of the Apostles, and
many Christians in the Roman era suffered martyrdom.
Oppressive governments and endless conflicts in the last
one hundred years, such as World Wars I and II, and the
Middle East wars in Iraq, Egypt, and Syria have seen
their share of martyrs.
“If the world hates you, know
that it has hated me before it
hated you. If you were of the
world, the world would love
you as its own; but because
you are not of the world, but
I chose you out of the world,
therefore the world hates
you. Remember the word
that I said to you: ‘A servant is
not greater than his master.’
If they persecuted me, they
will also persecute you. If
they kept my word, they will
also keep yours.
