Goose Creek CISD --- Business Information Management I COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course develops technology skills with applications from personal and business situations focusing on spreadsheets, databases, presentation management, networking, operating systems, and emerging technology with a review of keyboarding and word processing. The importance of technology in the business world will be stressed daily. Techniques used to deliver instruction vary from hands-on lectures, small group activities, multi-media materials, to student projects. Upon completion of this course students will have satisfied one year of computer technology credit which is required for graduation. COURSE OBJECTIVES: After completing this course, each student will be able to successfully use Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and PowerPoint. Students will be able to identify how each of these is applicable in different personal and business situations. Upon completion of this course students will have a professional, electronic portfolio containing work from the semester that can be used for college, job and scholarship applications. COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Benefits of this course are unique to the individual but always derived from the quality of work and the invested time and effort of the individual. Work hard on your own future! The knowledge that you gain in this class will be applied to your other classes, your college application process, your job search, and most “real world” jobs. All work assigned for each class meeting is the responsibility of each student, and is part of the six week grade. Students are expected to display a high level of professionalism. Courteous and supportive behavior and good use of grammar, spelling, and sentence structure are required. In accordance with the GCCISD Student Handbook, this course seeks to develop professional competency in students. Students are expected to perform all work in a professional manner. MICROSOFT OFFICE SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION Goose Creek CISD and Career and Technical Education (CTE) will provide your student with an opportunity to become a certified Microsoft Office Specialist free of charge. The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification program certifies a level of expertise has been achieved in Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Industry recognizes these certifications as the standard for validating expertise in using Microsoft Office programs when hiring. Your student will practice during class and have access to practice outside of class. Once the practice test criteria have been met, your student will take the MOS certification test. It is a course expectation that students will successfully earn two MOS certifications during the school year. Grade distribution will be as follows: 60% = Major grades: Tests, Performance Assessments (GMetrix), Projects, Major Labs, etc. 40% = Minor grades: Daily Grades, Quizzes, Homework, etc. Additional Grading Policies: Retake Opportunity: Students may redo a daily assignment or major grade for which they received a failing grade. Students will have three school days from when they receive the failing grade to make up daily assignments, and five days school days to redo a major grade. (Semester and Final Exams are exempt from these retake policies) A student will not receive a grade higher than a 70 upon redoing a daily assignment or major grade. Students may submit late daily work with ten (10) points deducted for each day after the due date for a maximum of three school days. After the third school day, no late work will be accepted, and a 0 will be given for that assignment. CLASSROOM POLICIES: All policies in the student handbook will be followed. Students will sit in assigned seats and be held responsible for equipment and furniture at their workstation. Students will leave his/her work-station clean each day. No personal grooming is to be done in class (i.e. combing/brushing hair, applying make-up, spraying any colognes or perfumes or hair products, etc.) All computer time is very valuable in relation to the completion of assignments; therefore, leaving the classroom for personal reasons (i.e. restroom) will be limited. Go before class! Students will remain seated until the teacher dismisses you at the dismissal bell. There will be a sign out/sign in sheet to go the restrooms. You must also have a restroom pass before leaving the room. All electronics, including I Pads, are to be put away during class time unless a specific lesson calls for it or you have permission from the teacher to use it. COMPUTER USE RULES: No software, including games and CDs, may be added or used on any district computer without permission. All computer equipment available to the student is his or her responsibility while using it. Any abuse of the equipment will be treated as vandalism. The Internet can only be used with your teacher’s permission. This includes visiting sites that are unapproved and/or finding ways to view blocked sites. No use of Network areas is allowed without permission. No use of personal e-mail is allowed by students in Goose Creek schools. No food or drink will be allowed in the computer lab! 2
