Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
I welcome you and your children to the beginning of a new
school year. I always find these few weeks to be positive
and full of energy! A week from tonight, your students will
be getting ready for the first day of school, to see old friends and to meet new ones, and to begin a new
opportunity to learn, to grow, and to excel!
Blessings on you, your children, and your family during this upcoming school year.

Mass Information:
From the Desk of the Chaplain ~ Daily Mass is offered in the Chapel at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Fr. Munshower, our Senior Chaplain, encourages members of the
Cathedral Family to contact him to have a mass said in memory of a loved one. His phone number is 9687362. The $10 mass stipend would go to a fund to help financially marginalized students here at Cathedral
High School – helping those within our midst who need our help! If you are not able to pay the $10, you may
still submit an intention for our daily Mass. Please contact Fr. Munshower at 968-7362 for details and
arrangements. Father also requests that, if you contract a Mass, that someone from your family tries to be in
attendance on that day.
Communion Services and Masses begin at 7:00 a.m. in the Cathedral Chapel.
 Father John Zahn, Assistant Chaplain, will be offering Mass during the school day on a rotating basis. This will
allow your children to take advantage of a daily mass during their resource periods some days.

Congratulations:
The Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages (IUHPFL) has successfully ended its summer programs in
France, Germany, Spain, and Mexico. We are happy to report that your school was well represented by Clare Welch, Lauren Tolley,
Danila Burnham, James Brokaw, and Keith MacDonell, whose performances reflected the
standards of the language program at your school.

IUHPFL participants pledge to use only the foreign language during the Program
and to follow an Honor Code throughout the length of the Program. They attend classes in
the morning, have planned activities in the afternoon, and they embark on several
excursions to enhance their cultural awareness. They also live with a host family, which requires
them to adapt to a new lifestyle and set of customs. Thanks to the excellent preparation and support
from your foreign language program, as well as that of your staff and faculty, your school’s students
were able to successfully complete the Program.

Vincent Corsaro & Wesley Bernard competed in the Asics Fargo Cadet Nationals in Fargo ND, the largest most
prestigious wrestling tournament for high school wrestlers in the country the week of 7/18 7/22. Both did well. Vincent going a solid 6-2 @ 145 lbs in the freestyle tourney, while Wesley @
HWT finished 8th in the Greco-Roman style & also finishing 5th in the Freestyle portion attaining
ALL AMERICAN status in both styles. Congrats to both young men and all their hard work!
Irish advance to 3 v 3 soccer “Worlds”: Congratulations to our Cathedral Class of 2013 soccer players Jonathan
Avellana, Quinn Kelley and Zain Santamaria who by their semi-finalist finish at the 3 v 3 Live USA Regional
Championships in Fairfield Ohio last weekend, have advanced to the 3 v 3 World Championships at the ESPN Wild World
of Sports complex in Disneyworld January 14th-16th. Our Irish boys
playing on the 3 v 3 USA tour circuit, multiple weekends this summer,
qualified for the Regionals by virtue of their success in the Indiana
tournaments. Despite being the youngest team in the High School
bracket, the boys seeded third, advanced to the Regional semi-finals before losing a thriller in overtime on a goldengoal.
Also playing on the squad in the local qualifying tournaments were Curtis Steger, Chase Rollins and Jake Ries, all
soon to be Juniors. The six boys were 3 v 3 National finalists in 2010. Great work boys and good luck at the World
Championships in Disneyworld !
Announcements:

two additions:

 On Monday, August 8th, there will be a New Parent Coffee in the Auditorium from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. given by the
Mothers’ Club. Dads are welcome, too! We welcome all new parents to this coffee, whether you are a freshman or
a transfer student’s parent. This coffee will give you an opportunity to meet other new parents and also to hear
from some of our Cathedral administration that you did not meet at the New Parents’ Meeting in
early June. Speakers at this program will be Dave Worland – Principal, Lisa Ford – Vice
Principal for Academic Affairs, Tom Greer - Vice Principal for Student Affairs, and Rolly
Landeros – CIO, who will speak about PowerSchool, your child’s on-line grade program through
which you may monitor his/her class standings.

On Tuesday, August 9th, the Freshman Welcoming Mass will be held in the Robert V. Welch Student
Activity Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. We invite all freshmen, their parents and family members to this Liturgy, to
be celebrated by Father William G. Munshower, Chaplain and Father John Zahn, Chaplain.
We ask our students to sit with their families, not with their classmates and friends for this
celebration. At the time our students will celebrate Baccalaureate, just prior to their graduation,
we point out to them that their first and last official acts on the Cathedral campus were for
liturgies. We welcome the entire family for this Mass if this saves child care worries for some of
your families. Attire for this liturgy is as follows:
o Gentlemen: dress pants, shirt with collar, socks and shoes
3
o Young ladies: dress or skirt/blouse or dress slacks and blouse. Shoes should be of comfortable height.
o Please also read the italicized segment below about “proper Christian modesty for school attire.”
Orientation programs:
Attire for all Orientation Programs:
Young men: nice shirt and pants, clean-shaven, NO SHORTS OR JEANS.
Young ladies: blouse/shirt and pants/skirt or a dress, NO SHORTS OR JEANS.
Christian modesty is an expectation. The Cathedral definition of “Christian modesty” is: No navel or belly
is to be revealed; spaghetti straps will not be worn; and no clothing will have any message advocating
drugs, alcohol, or sexual activities or references. Clothing worn at school (except on special dress-up
days) will be hemmed and not torn. There is to be no visible cleavage, no mini-skirts, and no muscle
shirts.
Please be sure to share this information with your student.

Freshman Orientation: Monday, August 8th from 8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Students do not wear uniforms on this day.
Since pictures will be taken, they should wear an attractive shirt (not merely a T-shirt or a sleeveless shirt), socks and
shoes (no flip-flops or clogs), and hair should be clean and well-groomed. Jeans (with hems and no torn knees) may be
worn, but shorts and sweats may not be worn. Jeans are permitted for this Orientation Day.

Transfer Student Orientation Program on Monday, August 8th from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. in the Student Life Center
Commons: This is handled by Mr. Duane Emery, Vice President for Enrollment Management. I know that he has made
transfer students aware that this orientation will take place on Monday, August 8 in SLC Commons from 3:30 – 5:00
p.m.

Upperclass Orientation Day, August 10, is a very important mandatory day for your upperclass students. As
with all school days, students who are not dressed appropriately will be sent home, and the unexcused absence will be
recorded. Please be sure that your student follows these guidelines with regard to the relaxed dress code for
orientation day:
Seniors at 8:30 – 9:30 AM
Juniors at 10:00 AM -11:30 AM
Sophomores at 12:00 – 1:30 PM

Jay Ruckleshaus & The Joseph Maley Foundation Partnership
Jay Ruckelshaus, son of John and Mary Ruckelshaus, graduated from
Cathedral High School in May 2011 as the valedictorian. Among his many
distinguished honors, he was accepted to Harvard, Yale, and received the Wells
Scholarship from Indiana University; he declined these offers to attend Duke
University as an AB Scholar. In high school, Jay participated on the cross
5
country team, the swimming team, crew, the Brain Game team, and led the
school as the Habitat for Humanity President, a class officer, and National
Honor Society officer. As a remarkable leader, loyal friend, and talented student,
Jay is highly regarded by his family, friends, teachers, and peers. The love and
kindness Jay shows on a daily basis to all he meets is truly unparalleled.
Jay, unfortunately, was seriously injured in a diving accident on July 17th.
He is currently in intensive care at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, with a
severe spinal cord injury. He is presently suffering from quadriplegia, with
hopes and prayers of family, friends, and the community for his future.
Jay’s friends are partnering with the Joseph Maley Foundation to honor
Jay and raise funds for the many unknown uncovered expenses that are on the
horizon through probable year-long rehabilitation. The Joseph Maley
Foundation annual golf outing was already scheduled for August 10 at 1:00 p.m.
at Eagle Creek Golf Course in Indianapolis. The Foundation, which is an
existing 501(c)(3) not-for-profit entity that serves children and young adults of
all abilities, is partnering with Jay’s friends by dedicating this year’s golf outing
to Jay. Additional funds raised for Jay at the golf outing through this
partnership will be dedicated to support Jay in his rehabilitation.

permitted. Socks must be worn at all times.”

CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER READING POLICY SCHOOL YEAR 2011-2012
Students are required to read two (2) books; however, at least one specific book is required for each grade level. Students
may choose the second book from the list provided. The required book will facilitate additional
discussion and study in each class during the school year to complement the existing literature
curriculum on each level. The summer reading tests for both books will be given on Thursday, August
18, 2011, in all English classes. These tests will count for 10% of the student’s first quarter English
grade. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO HIGHLIGHT AND TO TAKE CHAPTER NOTES WHILE
READING THE SELECTIONS IN ORDER TO FACILITATE REVIEW BEFORE TAKING THE TESTS
IN THE FALL. Please be advised that books should be ordered/purchased early from retail stores to
ensure adequate reading time. We also strongly encourage students to purchase copies of required
reading books and to be prepared to bring these to class.

Choir News:
What a fabulous time the choir travelers had during their week in Ireland! Besides seeing the most famous sights
such as Malahide Castle, Guinness Storehouse, Rock of Cashel, kissing of the
Blarney Stone, Bunratty Castle, Christ Church Cathedral and Trinity College, we
spent a full day touring the Dingle Bay Peninsula and Inch Beach which were
maybe the most beautiful sights we saw in Ireland! Miles and miles of beautiful
mountains were towering over the stunning bays and beaches. Although it had
been raining for days prior to our visit, our Irish prayers asking for good weather
were answered with sunshine every day with only sprinkles twice. Our irish driver
said that ordinarily the sights in the bay area were quite hazy due to weather. The
choir performed at the Guiness Storehouse, Blarney Woolen Mills, at the Bunratty
Medieval Banquet and sang the Saturday evening mass at St. John’s Cathedral in
Limerick. Before heading home, we traveled to Monkstown to take some Irish
dancing lessons. What great fun!

Service Outreach News:
12
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
“Moses did not know that the skin of his face had become radiant while he conversed with the Lord.” Exodus 34:29-35. Our
service actions are our opportunity to become closer to God and to share conversation with Him. Closeness to God
changes us as we experience the graces that our Lord puts in our path and re-kindles in our personal transfiguration. We
become inwardly and outwardly radiant in our walk with God and our understanding of how we are loved. And we serve as
a beacon to others, sharing hope and love.
Class Service Projects Class service projects in August become perfect service opportunities for off-season sport groups
and families. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities. By supporting these
projects on Wednesday, Aug 10 at Anna’s House (4:00 PM-7:30 PM), and on Saturday, Aug 13 at the Cathedral Soup
Kitchen (10:30-1:30), we show a unified force of Irish love in the community. Research has shown that family service
projects are bonding core actions that reinforce good decision reasoning for teenage students and help a family to “walk the
talk.” Innumerable opportunities are listed below that can be developed as a family service projects.
Habitat for Humanity-Get Ready For Shack City! Could there be a more vital way for us to support community needs in
Indianapolis than to support low cost housing? Cathedral will help to construct our ninth Habitat for Humanity home in
Indianapolis this fall. Our Habitat for Humanity chapter, led by seniors Natalie Dickman, Grace Waltz and Claire Welch, will
host Shack City on September 9th as an insightful and dynamic fundraising/educational experience in homelessness and
the need for low cost housing. This project helps us to raise $5,000 by our chapter to support the annual fall Habitat home
that Cathedral undertakes as an important community outreach each year. Thanks always for your support of Habitat!
Senior Service Our Cathedral 2011 seniors have contributed more than 37,000 service hours to the Indianapolis
community and more through their acts of giving and support during their last four years. This equals more than eighteen
persons in payroll that has been donated through their volunteer work and support. Their insights gained have been
immeasurable as they conclude their four years at Cathedral and prepare to go forth to acquire their next four years of
learning and contribution. Congratulations, class of 2011, on your good works and heart.
Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all
hours received since the start of school. There is a small button in the upper right hand corner to view the
service hour detail and summary by year. For the 2011-12 academic year, service hours for seniors are due
December 1, 2011 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2011-12, freshmen,
sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2012. The service hours for all students will be shown on
their fourth quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours earned after April 1
may be credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis as well. After
Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.

Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each
month. The balance of 2011 and 2012 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community
needs.
Service Reflection
They say it takes a minute to serve a special person,
An hour to appreciate them,
A day to love them,
But then an entire life to forget them.
May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek to
address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide.

"Family, Sports, and Faith'"
September 15, 2011
with Patrick McCaskey, Senior Director of the Chicago Bears
Patrick McCaskey will offer his personal witness to faith as a Christian athlete, husband, father and businessman. He
reveals his personal faith journey and how faith is key in the lives of many athletes, coaches, religious leaders and others he
has known. This personal story looks at decades of spiritual enlightenment and life lessons - recalling with good humor and
compassion those who made the cut on and off the field - plus people who left comfortable lives to serve the underserved in
extraordinary ways.
Hear the stories of team owners, inspirational players and extraordinary athletes who looked beyond the game - to live by
faith, to serve and dedicate themselves to their Creator. Personal experiences of working with great charities and faith
leaders along with growing up in an exceptional sports family are shared.
Patrick McCaskey is a 36-year veteran and Senior Director of the Chicago Bears and parishioner at the Church of St. Mary
in Lake Forest, IL. He is chairman of Sports Faith International, an initiative which recognizes people who are successful in
sports while leading exemplary lives. He is a speaker known for his moving and humorous presentations on sports,

Meditation: Numbers 13:1-2, 25–14:1, 26-29,34-35
“We ought to go up and seize the land.” (Numbers 13:30)
21
For centuries, parents have named their little boys “Joshua” and “Caleb” after these biblical heroes. There is something
attractive about the way Joshua and Caleb were faithful and brave, something appealing about the way they put their
confidence in God. Even God himself recognized that Caleb had “a different spirit and follows me unreservedly” (Numbers
14:24). Ultimately, because of their trust in God, these were the only two adult Israelites allowed to enter the Promised
Land!
All twelve of the men Moses sent to scout the land of Canaan saw the same things during their forty-day reconnaissance
mission, but only Joshua and Caleb gave an encouraging report. They were the only ones who remembered God’s power
and his promises. The others could see nothing but obstacles ahead of them—obstacles that seemed like giants to their
frightened imaginations.
Our troubles can seem like giants to us, too. That’s because we are engaged in a kind of inner battle going on in our minds.
On the one hand, we have the voice of the Holy Spirit encouraging us as Joshua and Caleb did: “You can do it! Christ is in
you! Go and take the spiritual land!” On the other hand, we have voices from the devil and our own fallen nature, like the
other scouts, chanting: “No, I can’t! It’s too hard. I’m on my own. I’ll never get there.”
When the battle rages like this, we need to step back and recall the goodness and promises of the Lord. His word says:
“Fear not, I am with you; be not dismayed; I am your God. I will strengthen you, and help you” (Isaiah 41:10). It teaches us
to proclaim: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). With assurances like these, we can find
the strength to take on the “giants” that threaten us.
“Holy Spirit, I trust in your power and in your love! Come to my aid. In my weakness, show the strength of your
might!”
