Pacific Oaks Library Goals
Academic Year 2010-2011
The library’s overarching theme for the 2010-2011 academic year will be reinvention based
upon self-reflection. In conjunction with this concept, our leading, supporting elements include
a greater focus on the integration of existing and emergent technologies as well as a more
integrated approach to services.
1) Migrate data to new ILS, Koha
Project owner: Erin Barta
Established date of conversion: 10/1
Full launch: 11/19
Project status: 95% complete
Current hold up: New CSS integration
Passive goal: Increase quality and number of services to students
Passive goal: Improve ability to collect and analyze data for more sophisticated user
behavior reporting to inform the development/revision of programs and services
Active goal: Increase student OPAC usage by 50%
2) Convert classification system from DDC to LOC

Established date of completion: 5/31
Records conversion: 100% Complete
Project status 90% complete
Completion pending: Relabeling of materials
Passive goal: Bring the library in line with systems, standards and best practice
appropriate to an academic institution
3) Move the entire library to 55 Eureka

Project status: 50% complete; no response from TCS on archives and thesis storage
after repeated attempts to contact
Completion pending: Construction, contracting, purchase of moving materials, etc.
Passive goal: Make library services, programs, and assets more easily available to
students
Active goal: Increase library usage by 50%
4) Finalize and implement comprehensive, embedded information literacy program

Project status: 99% complete; faculty engagement missing component

Active goal: Increase the quality of research inquiries appropriate to academic
scholarship
Active goal: Increase the number and duration of database sessions by 30%, as it is
indicative of extended/expanded inquiry
Active goal: Contribute to the objective of increasing library usage by 50%
a. Explore gaming in higher education (physical, virtual) to support learning
outcomes
i. Passive goal: Integrate this mode of learning into information literacy
program
ii. Passive goal: Monitor the development of this concept as it manifests at
other institutions
b. Launch faculty/staff technology/computer mini-sessions during lunch hours and
by appointment
i. Passive goal: Increase faculty/staff awareness of emergent technologies
and issues aimed at improving workflows and general knowledge
ii. Passive goal: Increase library collaboration among departments
iii. Active goal: Increase faculty/staff library usage by 20%
c. Continue offering Faculty and Staff Day in the Library to support this initiative
d. Experiment with effective strategies for faculty engagement

5) Explore back digitization of theses

Project status: Completed – back digitization cost prohibitive; move towards presentfuture digitization via ProQuest and automation of thesis submissions
Resolution: All thesis that have been digitized to date will be linked in to catalog via
Scribd or TCS server space
Current hold up: The return of cost estimates for mass digitization from various vendors
Passive goal: Increase accessibility of materials
Active goal: Convert 100% of print theses to digital-only copies, sending 1 copy for
digitization, retaining 1 copy for archival purposes
6) Evaluate archival items for preservation/digitization

Project status: Extended into Fall, 2011
Passive goal: Bring the library in line with systems, standards and best practice
appropriate to an academic archive
Passive goal: Increase accessibility of archival materials
Passive goal: Preserve/treat decaying materials
Active goal: Increase use of archives by 15%
a. Identify materials in need of critical care
b. Develop manual for storage, care, preservation, treatment, etc.
7) Develop disaster plan for general collections and archives

Project status: Moved to 2011-2012 due to TCS involvement
Passive goal: Bring the library in line with systems, standards and best practice
appropriate to academic and archival institutions
Passive goal: Bring organization and stability to library practices and procedures
8) Rework library’s website and resources

Established date of completion: 1/15 with continued development
Project status: Completed
Current hold up: Release of control by TCS and launch of new CMS
Passive goal: Increase knowledge and awareness of academic, research practices and
emergent trends in Pacific Oaks’s fields of study
Passive goal: Support goals of information literacy program
Passive goal: Increase services, programs and outreach initiatives to patrons
Passive goal: Bring the library in line with systems, standards and best practice
appropriate to academic and archival institutions
Active goal: Contribute to the objective of increasing library usage by 50%
Active goal: Contribute to the objective of increasing the quality of research inquiries
appropriate to academic scholarship
Active goal: Contribute to the objective of increasing the number and duration of
database sessions by 30%, as it is indicative of extended/expanded inquiry
Active goal: Establish reliable base-line data for library website usage
a. Sample components include (micro-)blogging, podcasting, Captivate/Articulate
tutorials (self-paced instruction), services, hours, virtual reference portal,
accessibility services, academic honesty/plagiarism/copyright guides, etc.
9) Evaluate, correct the library’s ADA compliance status

Project status: Halted due to problems with move; library out of compliance as of 5/19
Completion pending: Move to new library where environment may be accurately
assessed given forthcoming construction
Passive goal: Increase availability of resources to students with disabilities
Active goal: Bring the library in line with federal and state laws
