Comments: I arrived at KECH age 14 and started on the same September day that Michael
Southworth began his illustrious career. I wonder if he still remembers teaching RE to 4C last
period Fridays?! The music and school productions were unforgettable, as were the regular
concerts in the sixth form common room led by such notables as Chris Astill, Alan Horton,
Tim Hughes and others. my own life in education has undoubtedly been shaped by the likes
of the aforementioned MS, Denis Marsden, John Smith, John Cleak, Geoff Sanders, Boris
Fildes and the man who led them - Alan Cholmondeley.
I last visited in 84, long overdue for a return...

Comments: I must admit that I never really fully appreciated just how good Camp Hill is as
a school and a springboard for future opportunities and success. At the time I truly did not try
any way near hard enough at school but the one thing that Camp Hill does very well is to
make you aware that every person that gets into this school can achieve their visions based
on their merit for simply being there.

Comments: Nearly forty years on I hope I haven't left it too late!I still remember my time at
Camp Hill as years which left lasting quality and values in my life. I was sad to hear about
Len Bowles: I'll never forget his maths lessons and his readings from "Goodbye Mr Chips". I
majored in chemistry and ultimately got a Ph.D, Then I totally changed career and now I'm a
senior corporate lawyer with a multinational, down here in the south east.

Comments: It's good to read about the school in the press from time to time. I really
enjoyed my time there. For my sins, I have gone on to be a lawyer! My father, Keith Prowse,

Comments: It seems like a lifetime ago back to when i was trying to get out of cross country
runs. I am not sure how much i enjoyed being at school at the time, hindsight has certainly
given it a different tint. On the whole, it gave me a great foundation to go on and get the
most out of life.

Comments: Wonderful years, remembered with such affection and respect, setting the
structure on which to build a life full of interest and challenges. Tony Appleby was my mentor
in art and design, and John Cleak would be utterly astonished that I became a publisher.
After Camp Hill it was Birmingham College of Art and Crafts studying industrial design, then
three years playing guitar with Keith Powell and the Valets and recording at Abbey Road, and
then a move to Australia and a life of publishing. Being in the last year to start at the old
campus, I have been down the monkey hole and have been frog-marched around the
playground as a sherrin. I wouldn't have missed it for quids!

Comments: Main memory of Camp Hill was as a (mediocre) member of the swimming team
coached by Gerry Thain, at that time the one of the strongest school and club swimming
teams in the UK. After a gap year working for Vickers in Barrow-in-Furness studied
engineering at Churchill College, Cambridge, flirted with sociology, and then fell into a career
in civil engineering mostly tunneling and transportation, working on Channel Tunnel on and
off over 20 years, with spells in Indonesia, Egypt, Singapore and Hong Kong. In USA since
1991 and California since 1995, first in Los Angeles and the last five years in the San
Francisco Bay Area.

Comments: On leaving, I fulfilled my schoolboy ambition of joining the fledgling computer
industry (then Burroughs, now Unisys). Starting as a humble computer engineer, I worked
my way up through various management roles finally ending my career as the Unisys
Director of Quality for Europe.
On early retirement in 2002, I set up my own business process consultancy company
specialising in Security, Customer Advocacy, Quality and Business Excellence.

Comments: After leaving school worked at University of Birmingham until 1972. Emigrated
to New Zealand in 1973 to work at Otago University. Still there in current position of Senior
Teaching Timetables Administrator. Along the way gained B.Com. in Information Systems.
Due to retire at end of 2008.
Wish to pay tribute to some former teachers at the school who gave me much inspiration, the
late Jeff Sanders, G.D. "Dan Matthews", Denis Marsden, John Cleak whose marking of my

Comments: Congratulations on Ofsted reports and Sunday Times Award. I found the website
via the item on BBC news. Sad to hear of death of Len Bowles who I remember with great
affection not only for some fine maths teaching but also for being a true polymath, and
especially for his addiction to "Three men in a boat" which was always read aloud when the
term's coursework had been completed.
