Lesson 1 Introduction Welcome Esteemed Student of Life! This course is about… you! Where did you come from? What are you made of? How does your amazing brain do its thing? Who are your fellow living creatures and what (or who) do they prefer to dine on? All this and more— covered in a mere one-thousand pages!!! Yes, well, there is A LOT to say... So luckily, with biology, there is also a lot you can DO --especially if you can access some basic lab equipment, and maybe even get your gloves on a microscope and a pre-prepared collection of slides. With the latter, you will be able to view for yourself many of the small-in-stature-large-impactmicro-creatures (and creature parts) discussed in the book. Often, you will have the opportunity to choose the lab that suits your level of interest and equipment--also, there are virtual labs online if you want to explore that route across the labscape. There are 37 chapters in the book. Three of them are optional—meaning, that if you are curious about the topic, then study the chapter for the pure joy of it (and, of course, the grade-raising extra credit). If you do a lesson a week, then in 36 weeks you will have greatly expanded your knowledge of all life on this planet and racked up 10 high school credits (whoop, whoop). The textbook for this course is Biology published by Glencoe Science, 2009, ISBN 978-0-07-880284-3 How to use this textbook: First set of assignments: Please read Reading for Information on pages xxvi-xxviii (3 pages). Your book is your main teacher for this course, so do read these pages that describe how the book is structured. Then do the Scavenger Hunt on page xxix. Write down your answers on a separate sheet of paper. Global Village School® Biology Lesson 1 1 You need to complete all of the assignments in each of the 36 lessons to receive credit. PLEASE use the book to answer the Section Assessment questions. Your answers may look a lot like the wording in the book, but it's important that you structure the sentences yourself (rather than copying exactly from the book) to cement your knowledge. Most of the answers can be quite short (providing you have the correct info). Use the chapter summary page to review for the chapter test. You can also use the online resources to help you with particularly challenging topics. Go to Concepts In Motion to access tutorials and interactive tables for every chapter. LAB EQUIPMENT: It is very handy to have some items at your disposal for many of the labs, such as a magnifying lens, binoculars, a calculator, metric ruler and light microscope. Two lab items that you may want to order now: 1) Field guide of trees for your area (Lab in lesson 19). 2) Mammal field guide for your area (Lab in lesson 28). Lab Safety This is a lab course; if you complete the assigned mini-labs, bio-labs and virtual labs you will receive science laboratory credit. Read page xxx. You (lucky dog) get to skip ALL of the lab safety forms (they are the first assignment in every lab in this book). BUT! Please do study the guidelines and symbols on pages xxx – xxxiii for the quiz on lab safety. The safety symbols also appear, for handy reference in the future, on the first page of the biology book. Please display your expansive lab safety knowledge by answering the questions below. You may reference the biology book. Write or type the answers on a separate sheet of paper. Global Village School® Biology Lesson 1 2 Lab Safety Quiz 1. The NUMBER ONE lab rule is to make darn sure that nothing splashes, bounces or shatters into your irreplaceable EYES. What is the essential piece of lab equipment that will prevent this? 2. List 5 ways to prevent accidents. 3. Explain how/if it is okay to smell lab substances. 4. True or False. List the examples and precaution for “sharp objects.” Global Village School® Biology Lesson 1 3 Please answer the Seek and Find Questions below by using the Student Resources Section at the back of the book. Write the answers on a separate sheet of paper. Seek and Find Questions: 1) Read page 1105. What do both types of cells have? 2) Read pg 106. What are the 3 steps you should use when you analyze information? 3) Look at page 1108. Give 2 reasons why you should learn to take notes. 4) Just read page 1109 and use the info to help you to answer the harder questions in this course. 5) Look at page 1111. Copy down 4 questions to ask yourself when analyzing print media. 6) Read 1112. Do #1 and #2 in “Practice the Skill.” 7) What page would you go to for a reminder about how to read a bar graph? 8) What is the phylum name of amoebas? 9) Is a sea sponge in kingdom plantae or animalia? 10) What page would you go to for a reminder about how to convert temperature? 11) What is the metric unit of mass? 12) Scientific word origins. What is the meaning of the Latin root "vore"? 13) What is on page 1126? 14) Look in the glossary. What does the word genome mean? 15) Use the index. What page will give you information about cytoplasm? Global Village School® Biology Lesson 1 4 Checking the Preliminaries Did you read xxvi-xxviii ? Check. Did you do the Scavenger Hunt on page xxix? Check. Did you take the Lab Safety Test ? Check. Did you answer all the Seek and Find Questions about the Student Resources Section? Check. Eeeeeeeeeex-cellent. You are ready to tackle Lesson Two! Please email or send (right away) to your teacher the following: 1) Answers to the scavenger hunt questions. 2) Answers to the lab safety test. 3) Answers to the Seek and Find Questions. Thanks! Carry on. May the wind be ever at your back and all that… Global Village School® Biology Lesson 1 5 Study Guide Copyright Notice: Copyright © 2015 All rights reserved.
