We will be examining whether or not proximity and the physical location of the civilizations plays any role in similarities or events of the myths. This unit will focus on comparing different myths concerning a world-wide flood. We will be examining what natural events in history may have inspired these stories and see if proximity plays any role in similarities. This unit will focus on the archetype of the trickster and what role he/she plays in mythology. This will then be carried over to see how the trickster functions in literature. We will examine what qualities are needed to be a hero in life and literature. Students should be able to conclude that heroic figures are depicted as larger than life, though they do not need to be. This unit will focus on the Greek and Roman pantheons and compare the similarities due to cultural contact. The students will read either The Hobbit or One Ring to Rule Them All by J.R.R. Tolkien.
