What are we learning about in Reading? We have been learning about informational texts (nonfiction books). We’ve learned about the different features an information text has; table of contents, labels, bold words, and a glossary. We’ve been practicing to use questions words; when, who, where, what, how and why before, during and after reading an information text. We’ve also practiced asking ourselves before reading an informational text what we already know about the topic and what we still want to learn, this helps keeps us focused while reading. In guided reading we’ve been practicing sounding out words, touching each word as we read, and talking about what happened in the story after reading. Last month we learned the sight words; see, my, me, come, where, find, here, an. Ways you can support your child at home: Practice the sight words Read with your child every night, students should be starting to take over the role of the reader! Research a subject that your student is interested in learning more about by using informational texts from the public libraries. What are we learning about in Math? In math, we’ve learned the numbers 10 - 20. This month we are working on position words such as on top of, next to, beside, in between, above, below, under, in, inside of, behind, in front of, etc. We are also working on shape names and attributes. We are working on both flat shapes and 3D shapes. Ways you can support your child at home: Practice counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s! Use the number flash cards and beans to count and compare numbers. What are we learning about in Writing? We are switching our gears as writers and beginning a new unit on writing howto books. How-to books are easy to read directions on things we already know how to do. We’re listing our directions step by step and drawing and labeling diagrams that go along with our how-to books. We’re going to be adding transitional words to our how-to books such as first, next, and last. Provide materials and opportunities for your child to practice writing!
