Nonvascular Plants,
Mosses
and
Ferns
What are Nonvascular Plants??
What are Nonvascular Plants?
 Nonvascular plants don’t have a well developed
system of tubes for transporting water and other
materials
Soo…..…
They live in watery surroundings
-Constant water source
-Helps during reproduction
3 main groups of nonvascular plants
 Mosses
 Liverworts
 Hornworts
Mosses
Mosses
The
sporophyte
grows out of
the
gametophyte
The capsule
contains the
spores for
reproduction
Rhizoids are root
like structures that
hold the moss to the
earth
Why are mosses important?
Why are mosses important?
 Gardening! Gardeners often use peat moss to help
their soil hold in more water.
Liverworts and Hornworts
 Grown on moist rocks and soil
FERNS
Are they vascular or nonvascular?
Are they vascular or nonvascular?
 Ferns have true vascular tissue and they do not
produce seeds.
So how do they reproduce?
Are they vascular or nonvascular?
 Ferns have true vascular tissue(BUT it doesn’t work
well) and they do not produce seeds.
So how do they reproduce?
Spores!!
SPORES
 Ferns grow in moist conditions just like mosses
 The spores are found on the fronds
 The spores are released into the
surroundings and then grow into
