Metamorphic Rock Examples
Quartzite
Anthracite Coal
Tough building
material
High quality, creates
lots of energy when
burned
Metamorphic Rock: Marble
Metamorphic Rock: Slate
Used for: Billiards, chalkboards, roofs, floors
Metamorphic Rock Examples
Schist
Gneiss
Metamorphic
 “meta” = to change
 “morph” = form
 Metamorphic rocks are formed from
Parent rocks (pre-existing rocks)
 Parent rocks can be Igneous, sedimentary,
or other metamorphic rocks.
 Metamorphism The process through
which a rock’s structure is changed by
heat and pressure
Metamorphic Rocks are Formed
from Parent Rocks
Quartzite is the
Metamorphic
rock
(Parent Rock)
Sandstone
is the Parent
Rock
Parent rock of Marble

Limestone
Marble
Used For: Statues,
buildings, countertops
Metamorphic Rocks are Formed
from Parent Rocks
Slate
Shale
Which specimen is the parent rock?
Shale
Metamorphic Rocks are Formed
from Parent Rocks
Parent Rock  The original rock material that
forms metamorphic rock
Example:

Granite
Gneiss
Metamorphic Textures
 1. Foliated Rock 
Bands of minerals in
parallel layers
2. Non-foliated
Rock  Without
bands
Foliated Metamorphic Rock
Examples:
Schist
Phyllite
Slate
Non-foliated Metamorphic Rock Examples:
Marble 
Quartzite 
Metamorphic Environments:
Form where there is HEAT & PRESSURE
Magma and Friction make HEAT
Collisions and Gravity produce PRESSURE
Metamorphic Cheer

METAMORPHIC ROCK
 TEXTURES
 Foliated (mineral bands)
 Non-foliated (no bands, grainy or
smooth)

METAMORPHIC ROCK
 META = CHANGE
 MORPH = FORM
 Metamorphism involves the
change in form or structure of a
rock through heat and pressure.
3 ROCK TYPES:
 Igneous-formed from the cooling
and crystalization of magma
 Sedimentary-formed by the
compacting and cementation of
layers of sediment
 Metamorphic-formed by
structural/chemical change due to
heat and pressure
Metamorphic Rock Lab
 Set up your field notebook (Include
Title)
 Rotate independently between the
16 stations set up around the room
 Start with whichever station number
you are located
 Round 1: You will have 1 minute at
each station
 Do not switch to the next station
until told to do so
 Round 2: You may go back to any
unoccupied station, if needed
