Principal=s Message
I wanted to make sure all parents are aware of the additional P.A. Day, which
is a change in the year long calendar. Here is the message from the Board
Office:
Like all school boards across Ontario, KPR has added a PA Day to the current
school year. The additional day is required by the settlements negotiated last
fall by the provincial government and teachers’ federations. Friday, March
11, 2016 – the Friday before March Break – is now a designated professional
activity day. Students will not attend school that day, but KPR staff will
participate in professional development activities focused on provincial
education priorities.
Mrs. Whetung
ALLERGY INFORMATION / NOTICE
If your child has an allergy that staff should be aware of, please give me a call or send me a note so
we can be sure to have an appropriate plan in place.
Please remember - we are a Peanut Free and Tree Nut Free School!
Information for parents: Bullying and Conflict
A bully is someone who…hurts people AGAIN AND AGAIN
When someone behaves aggressively towards another person and this behaviour continues over time, it
is bullying. Bullies are persistent. They learn to use power and aggression to hurt or control others.
Those hurt by bullying become more and more powerless in the relationship, often finding themselves
trapped in the bully’s pattern of behaviour. Bullied children and teens often think, “I don’t know how to
make it stop. I’ve tried everything.”
Adults may not be aware that they have become bystanders, if they don’t step in to address the
bullying. It is up to adults in our schools and communities to teach children and teens how to connect
with others in positive, healthy and respectful ways. The KPR School Code of Conduct illustrates this
well. It states:
“Everyone has the right to be safe and to feel safe, welcome and included at school.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Everyone in our school community is responsible for promoting safe, caring relationships that
respect human dignity. Everyone is responsible for preventing harm.
Students, staff, volunteers, parents and guardians have additional responsibilities unique to
their roles.”
If you have concerns that your child or teen is being bullied, please tell us, as soon as possible. Please
speak with the teacher or principal.
Outside Clothing
Cold weather is here and it is our expectation that students go out for each of the
breaks during the day. Please make sure you are tucking some mittens, a hat and
warm outer clothing in your child’s bag. It is always a good idea to put a change of
clothing in a zip lock bag in their knapsack too; you never know when they might
need a quick change of clothing.
Morning Announcements
I would like to ask parents who are arriving with their children during our
announcement time (approximately 9:20-9:25) to please stop in the hallway
and listen. We are asking students to stand for the National Anthem and
remain standing to listen to the announcements. Having adults model the
importance of announcement time and respectful behavior during
announcements would be very helpful for our students. Thank you
School Council
Please join us at the next School Council meeting on Tuesday February 9th,
6:30-8:00 in the Staff Room. School Council is a great place to keep updated
about what is happening at the school and help shape many of the activities that
take place at our school. You do not have to be a voting member or on a
committee to attend meetings.
If any parent coming to Council requires Child Care, please let us know ahead
of time and we will make arrangements for this.
Police Checks
Just a reminder to parents that if you wish to volunteer on a trip or in the classroom
with your child (including grand-parents!) please make sure you have a police check
completed and in to the school well ahead of time. If you have done one and you are
not sure when it expires, just call or come in and see Mrs. Graham at the office.
School Spirit Week
Thank you to our Leadership Students who have been working on organizing a great School
Spirit Week for our students. School Spirit Week will run from Feb. 22-26th. A calendar of
events for each day will be coming home on Wednesday.

Kindergarten Registration
We are now accepting registration forms for Junior Kindergarten students for
September. If you have a child and would like a registration package please
contact Mrs. Graham or drop by the office to pick one up. Registration packages
are also available on the KPR website.
New mental health slogan
KPR has a new slogan for its mental health initiatives: Minds Matter at KPRDSB. The slogan was chosen
from among 203 entries submitted late last year by students, parents, guardians and staff from throughout
KPR. R.F. Downey PS teacher Andrea Orbell submitted the winning slogan, which will be used along with
the hashtag #mindsmatter@kprdsb. The winner was chosen by the Board-wide Mental Health Steering
Committee and the Student Leadership Group, which includes student representatives from each secondary
school across KPR.
