ADVISING MISSION: Academic advising at CSCC supports our institutional mission by aspiring to promote success and enhance quality of life in the development of life-long learners. Academic advising is a collaboration between students, advisors and institutional resources, designed to assist students in developing meaningful academic plans that lead to reaching academic and career goals. IV. LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a participant in academic advising, at CSCC, you will: 1) maintain and follow an academic plan and 2) identify institutional resources. V. EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS: As a student, you are expected to: 1. Contact your advisor each semester by email, phone or in person to schedule an advising appointment, discuss an Early Alert notification, etc. 2. Schedule and keep advising appointments each semester. (CSCC has a mandatory advising policy for all degree- and certificate-seeking students). 3. Be prepared for advising planning sessions by researching degree requirements, pre- and co-requisites, as well as transfer information. 4. Actively participate in advising by asking questions and sharing and clarifying goals. 5. Follow through on advisor recommendations in a timely way. 6. Identify where to find program requirements, registration policies, procedures and institutional resources. 7. Check your CougarNet email account weekly for important information. 8. Use the online class schedule and CougarNet to select and register for appropriate classes. 9. Effectively utilize Degree Works, CSCC’s degree audit tool, in order to maintain your academic plan and monitor progress toward completion of your program of study. 10. Keep your contact information (name, address, phone) current with the Records Office. 11. Accept responsibility for decisions. VI. EXPECTATIONS FOR FACULTY: As an advisor, I will: 1. Create a respectful environment where you feel comfortable asking questions, sharing and clarifying goals, and discussing issues relevant to your goals. 2. Be knowledgeable about programs, graduation requirements, policies, and procedures. 3. Assist and guide you as you develop and pursue goals and create an academic plan in Degree Works. 4. Refer you to appropriate resources, as needed. 5. Be accessible via phone, email, and by appointment, responding to messages within two business days. 6. Follow through on actions promised. 7. Provide you with a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for use during course registration after advisement each semester. 8. Maintain confidentiality. 9. Utilize Degree Works at least once a semester to help you track progress toward degree or certificate completion. 10. Follow-up if you receive an Early Alert notification. VII.
