Schmidt said he would be negotiating with the Maintenance Workers Union next week. He said they have already agreed on binding arbitration if necessary. He then presented the board with a revision to the school manual. This is the first time the manual has been revised in 20 years, he said. “It’s overdue. There have been several changes in the law that we must recognize.” Board members Janet Biss said she opposed several of the changes. She particularly did not like giving student’s permission to wear their hair any length, to driver their cars to school and to carry cell phones. “These rules were good enough for my generation; they’re good enough for the students now.” Other changes were that teachers could not use physical punishment on students, teachers must report all violations of school policy to the building principal, students convicted of using any kind of drug will be suspended for no more than 20 days, and all students found with drugs in the school will be turned over to juvenile authorities. The board voted 5-2 to approve the new manual. Student Body President Ryan Rodriguez said he welcomed the school board to the 21st century. The board then accepted a low bid from Farmer’s Dairy to provide at 3 cents a point. 8. Using the same information above, determine the most important elements, and write a multiple-element lead.
