Lab Safety Concerns:



Exercise extreme caution when handling hot objects.
Use oven mitts during handling of hot liquids.
Never touch hotplate.

Turn on the hotplate to medium.
Hold the metal rod parallel to the floor with wax dots facing table top.
Place tip of metal rod on the hot plate, wait for wax to react.

Label two 150 ml beakers one with “tap water” and one with “hot water”.
Fill a 150 mL beaker with100 mL of tap water.
Take temperature of water.
Fill another 150 mL beaker with hot water by bringing the coffee pot to your desk.
Place beaker of tap water so the bottom is 5 cm away from the bottom of the hot water beaker.
After 5 minutes, take and record the temperature of the water in the tap water beaker.
Draw a picture of what happened and why.

Fill a 100 mL beaker with 50 mL of ice water—add 5 drops blue food coloring.
Fill a 100 mL beaker with 50 mL hot water from coffee pot—add 5 drops red food coloring.
Simultaneously pour the water from both beakers into a 200 mL beaker.
Record what happens.
