Stress: The body and mind’s response to a demand Stress is something you can FEEL physically AND/OR mentally Examples: Asking someone on a date: You feel your heart race, palms sweat Watching the final seconds of a football game: Your mind is racing, heart pounding, palms sweat Stressors Any situation that puts a demand on the body or mind Examples: Environmental: Pollution, poverty, crowding Biological: Illness, Injury Thinking: Mental challenges, taking a test Behavioral: not enough sleep, drug use Life changing: Marriage, death Stress vs. Stressor? Stress is the FEELING you get from the STRESSOR, or situation Example: The act of asking someone out on a date is a STRESSOR, the situation. Your palms sweating and heart racing is the STRESS, or body’s reaction to asking someone on a date. Fight or Flight Response When your body provides you with energy, reflexes, and strength so you can respond to a stressor, or situation. Result? Your body releases EPINEPHRINE, or adrenaline, when you are in a fight or flight situation.
