NCCTM STATE MATHEMATICS CONTEST
APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY
Boone, North Carolina
Wednesday, April 4, 2012
Appalachian State University will sponsor qualifying contests for the Algebra I and Comprehensive parts
of the NCCTM State Mathematics Contest on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. We must limit the number of
participants per school to 8 for the Algebra 1 test and to 12 for the Comprehensive test.
The contests are open to all students who meet the eligibility requirements listed below. The purpose of
this contest is to stimulate interest in mathematics, to showcase the mathematical talents of local students,
and for schools to compete with other schools in the area. Participation in mathematical contests is highly
regarded by colleges and universities across the country.
Rules of Eligibility
Currently, a student may compete in only one division and at only one test site per year. Also, a student
must have been enrolled in Algebra I during the present academic year (2011-2012) or in the summer of
2011 to be eligible for the Algebra I exam. A student may compete only once in each subject division
except comprehensive which may be repeated. The specific rules can be found at the website:
http://math.ncssm.edu/smc/Inform/rules.htm
Calculator policy
Algebra I: Calculators and batteries will NOT be provided; students are expected to bring their own
calculators. Graphing calculators such as the TI-83 family and TI-84 family or equivalent are permitted,
but calculators that solve algebraic systems (e.g., TI-89 and TI-92) are not. Calculators may not be
allowed at the State Finals (depending on the Region).
Comprehensive: No calculators will be allowed.
Exams
The NC Standard Course of Study will be consulted when generating questions for both the Algebra I and
Comprehensive exams. The Comprehensive exam may include concepts from any high school math
course except Calculus.
Algebra 1: Exam will consist of 30 multiple-choice and 3 short answer questions. Students will be ranked
according to their scores on the multiple-choice part, and the short answer questions will ONLY be used
to break ties.
Comprehensive: Exam will consist of 25 multiple-choice questions and 3 short answer questions.
Students will be ranked according to their combined score on the multiple-choice and short answer.
