Letter to staff:

Dear Staff:

Next week (Oct. 15-18) is Teen Read Weekand I’ve got several activities planned for our kids in the school library.

#1: CAUGHT READING!!– Alicia should be distributing “Caught Reading” passes to you today. Please

“write up” students when you see them reading a book or magazine for their own purposes (i.e. not when you make the whole class read the textbook). Then students can come by the library in between classes, or during tutorials or lunch and redeem their “ticket” for a small prize (Halloween snacks, pencils, erasers, etc.). Let’s encourage reading this way!! [These "tickets" are on my library web site - link above - if you want to see them; pretty simple!]

#2: Daily Trivia:Each morning, I’m going to ask the Principal to read a trivia question during announcements. I’ll also post the questions on my Teen Read Week bulletin board in the library and email them out before lunch each day. (Kids can put their answers in a basket at the checkout counter and I’ll draw one winner from the correct answers to win a prize each day.)

#3: Art Contest:This contest is pretty loose and I don’t even have a grand prize set yet – maybe a yearbook. My goal with this is to get kids who are maybe more art-focused than readers into the library and talking about books. All art is due by the end of tutorials on Thursday, Oct. 18.

Rules for the contest:

1)It has to be their work (i.e. not something “borrowed” from the Internet),

2) it needs to be digital (like a photo or I can scan their work before the deadline),

3) it needs to be BOOK-RELATED

So that leaves it pretty open. I’ll post all the entries online, circulate a link to vote and announce the Grand

Prize winner on Oct. 23 (Parent-Teacher Night).

#4: Daily Activities and craftsin the library during tutorials and lunch – Feel free to send interested kids to the library during tutorials (kids will still need a pass from their teacher) next week. Please also share with them the week’s activities (I’ve got a poster coming soon):

Monday – Oct. 15

#1: Computer Videogames: Plants vs. Zombies, Zombie Fluxx, and others

#2: I’ll be videotaping kids reading scary stories

Tuesday – Oct. 16

1: Monster Bookmark Crafting

2: “Make me a Zombie” – I’ll help kids upload a photo of themselves to the web site http://makemezombie.com/which turns them into a zombie.

Wednesday – Oct. 17

#1: Franken-toy crafting!!

#2: Students make PSA’s about reading

Thursday – Art Contest Deadline is 9:30 a.m.!!! – Oct. 18

#1: Monster make-overs & take home scary books for the weekend!!

#2: Photo station (like a photo booth, with props and a back drop) – Kids have to give me an e-mail address and I’ll send them the image

Trivia:

Monday Trivia (scary stories trivia): In the book, “Ask the Bones: Scary Stories from Around the World,” there is a story from Mexico called “The Hand of Death”? WHO is murdered in this short, scary story?

Tuesday Trivia: (Monster-related): How many books do we have in the MVMHS library about MONSTERS?

(Hint: Use the library catalog search option)

Wednesday Trivia: "The horrid thing stands at his bedside, opening his curtains, and looking at him with yellow, watery, but speculative eyes... " Name the author and the "hideous” creature this vision inspired.

Thursday Trivia: What is Ms. van Buren’s favorite zombie book in the library?

(We're on a 4-day week due to budget cuts, so no events or trivia on Friday)
