Metro Parrot Head Newsletter (NY, NJ, CT) Vol. 16 No. 11 November 2008 STORIES FROM MY BANK OF BAD HABITS Imagine a private pre-opening party for the world’s newest Margaritaville. Imagine it’s not only the newest, but it’s the “northern-most”, and, it’s right in your own back yard. Imagine the endless supply of cocktails awaiting the guests. Imagine the great food that will be served. Imagine the great live rock and roll music that would bellow from it’s monster sound system. Now, imagine that you are invited to that party. Well, a bunch of lucky Metro’s didn’t have to imagine, they got to live it. On Sunday, September 28th, a group of Metro’s were invited to the VIP pre-opening party for the world’s newest Margaritaville, at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville Connecticut. From the minute they entered the front door, an army of wait staff took orders for any, and as many, cocktails they could desire. Open bars. Endless trays of hors d’oeuvres floated throughout the rooms. A buffet was everywhere they turned. Sushi, shrimp and stone crabs were the headliners at the raw bars. And thousands of mini “Cheeseburgers in Paradise” awaited Jimmy’s fans. All of this, and great live music by the Tangled Vine Band from the main stage. Yes, it was a great Sunday for these Metro’s. Some said the greatest parrot head party of the decade, some said the greatest of their life time. And thanks go out to the absolutely crazy wait staff, Margaritaville’s Corporate Director of Marketing, Tamara Baldanza, for the invitations; Margaritaville Mohegan Sun’s new General Manager, Craig T. Wilson, for throwing the world’s greatest party and to Jimmy Buffett for putting all of this on his tab. Now, how about New York City for the next one, or maybe a different island……… Long Island. Thanks Jimmy ! Dave Pohorylo P.S. If you missed the opportunity to have a chance at attending, please update your email with Kerry-Anne for her Banana Wind. It’s the only way we can reach everyone quickly with one of these last minute happenings. Trump drops price on Jimmy Buffett 'Margaritaville' casino deal THE ASSOCIATED PRESS October 29, 2008 Sometimes the art of the deal calls for it to be redone. That's what has happened to an agreement between Donald Trump and a former protege of his who's buying the Trump Marina Hotel Casino in Atlantic City. Due to the worsening economy, both sides agreed to reduce the purchase price for the casinohotel to $270 million, down from the $316 million they set as the price back in May. Trump's company, Trump Entertainment Resorts, can also scrap the whole deal if it doesn't go through by the end of May. New York developer Richard Fields is teaming with singer Jimmy Buffett's business arm to rebrand the casino as "Margaritaville." Despite the lower price, Donald Trump said he's glad the deal is still on. The worsening economy and credit crunch have put many casino projects on hold across the country or forced them to be canceled outright.Fields plans to keep the casino open during renovations and the transition to "Margaritaville." Seems to have fit on September 28, 2008. First, September 28 marks the annual Mets’ collapse on the last day of the season (again at Shea Stadium, again on the last day of the regular season, & again against the Florida Marlins). What a way to CLOSE Shea Stadium. Back to that motto. On September 28, the doors OPENED to the newest Margaritaville at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT. This private event was open only to the eight (8) most local Parrothead Clubs to Mohegan Sun and their VP (officers). The event was expanded to local clubs through a lottery, which our President Dave Pohorylo did very amiably. Fortunately, I actually sold my Jets’ tix for that day to Roy Scott months ago, which freed Karen & I up for the day. So, we boarded the Cross Sound Ferry, checked into our room in Norwich, CT, and shuttled immediately to Mohegan. On the boat, we pondered what this 3.5 hour party could be, and what we expected. We would have been happy with a couple of Landsharks & Margaritas (seemed more than appropriate), and a few small appetizers. Once we got to Margaritaville, we quickly hooked up with Scott & Kerry-Anne Willett (which shouldn’t seem too odd to anybody!), joined in the line with Lon Ormanian, Dave & Carol Pohorylo, Joe & Marie Lombardi, etc, to receive our required badges and present the appropriate ID. As Karen & got to the front of the line, we were told only the first 25 people would be allowed in @ 4:30. As we were in that lucky bunch we saw the waitstaff inside with Landsharks & Margaritas on trays (expectations seemed “right-on” at this point). The doors opened, we walked in, and were immediately offered drinks. Seconds later, cheeseburgers were offered, and on, and on, and on. We worked our way upstairs (for we knew this party was going to involve 900 people), grabbed a round table overlooking the Thames River, and gathered our crowd. We soon learned that the party involved an OPEN bar, over & above Landsharks and Margaritas…WOW!! This far exceeded anybody’s expectations of what the night would be like, but in reality…he owes us!! The food NEVER ended: hot stations, a raw bar, butler style appetizers all 3.5 hours, (live music, videos , stilt-walkers, etc. like any other Margaritaville). The camera came in handy, and the pix are on the Club’s website. All attendees were offered a 10% discount on every purchase at the retail store as well. We literally ate, drank, and were more than merry by the end of the night. Margaritaville officially opened to the public the next day, but we had to head “Back to the Island”. This is a beautiful Margaritaville, but, for comparison purposes, it is bigger than Key West & New Orleans, yet smaller than Orlando or Las Vegas. As the Long Island Coordinator, I’d like to lead a trip to Margaritaville Mohegan Sun during the Christmas Break. We could do a day trip (Sea Jet) out of Orient Point. More details to follow. TAGGED PLATE! On a recent trip to Las Vegas, Scott & I tagged a Metro Parrot Head license plate which was holding a very prominent position in Smuggler’s Hold. The owner of the plate, Long Island Coordinator Matt Smith, donated his plate to Margaritaville LV back in 2004 when Buffett’s oasis in the desert had only been open for 1 month. Be sure to look for the sister plate on your next road trip to Mohegan Sun.
