Tara Jamali BA in Italian BA in Communication Journalism Certificate Tara was the 2013 RLL Outstanding Senior. After graduation, Tara took part in a study abroad trip that allowed her to participate in the Festival Internazionale Orlando Innamorato, a theater festival for students. Tara played the lead role (in Italian) of Lucia in Dolore Sotto Chiave by Eduardo DeFilippo. Karl Barber BA in French BS in Chemical Engineering After graduation, Karl accepted a Fulbright Student Scholar Award to McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, where he worked in French with Dr. Roderick McInnes to develop therapies for human retinal degeneration. He is now undertaking his PhD studies in Biology at Yale, where he was admitted with a full fellowship. WHAT ARE RLL ALUMNI UP TO? Melissa Friedman BA in Spanish BA in International Studies Melissa graduated in 2005. She now works as an investor relations associate for a private equity real estate firm that invests in Colombia. Julia Cole BA (joint) in French BA (joint) in Italian After graduating from UB, Julia moved to France to work as an English Teaching Assistant for eight months. She is currently living in Washington DC doing freelance work as a French and Italian translator in addition to her full time job as a copyeditor. WHAT ARE RLL ALUMNI UP TO? Chantal Englert BA in French BA in Geography (International Business and World Trade concentration) Following graduation, Chantal moved back to Besançon, France and spent two years teaching English in primary schools to students aged 7-11. She then relocated to Metz and began working for the local Chamber of Commerce, teaching English to professionals in the area. Jamie Root BA in French BA in Linguistics Minor in Theatre Studying French at UB gave Jamie the opportunity to study in France for a semester in 2010 and to enter successfully into Indiana University's PhD program in French Linguistics. It also allowed him to assume the role of instructor and French Club coordinator at IU, where he's been able to pass on his passion for French both in the United States and in France. WHAT ARE RLL ALUMNI UP TO? Molly Poremski BA (joint) in French BA (joint) in Spanish Molly studied abroad her junior year, with a semester in Valencia, Spain and another in Besançon, France. After graduation, she began working at the Canadian Consulate General in downtown Buffalo in the immigration department, in part inaterpreting French. She then received her Masters of Library Science at UB. In 2012, she returned to UB, as the new subject librarian for RLL, Classics and Polish Studies. Amy Hardy BA in French BA in German, BA in Linguistics, Minor in Spanish Since graduating from UB, Amy earned certification to teach French and German in the US (grades 7-12). She also received a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship in Germany. Amy currently teaches English and French at the Edith Stein Schule in Bremerhaven, Germany. WHAT ARE RLL ALUMNI UP TO? Dayle Hodge BS in Aerospace Engineering BS in Mechanical Engineering Minor in French He is now in the middle of his fourth year of medical school in an MD/PhD program at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Allison Friedman BA in Spanish Minor in Education Allison opted for a career in public health. She is currently a pharmacy technician in a heavily Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking neighborhood in Queens. WHAT ARE RLL ALUMNI UP TO? Elise Roberts BA in Italian BA in International Studies BA in Political Science Minor in French Elise was RLL’s 2014 outstanding senior. In addition to a semester of study in Florence, Italy, Elise used her French as a Global Youth Connect human rights delegate in Kigali, Rwanda, and she worked with refugees as a second language tutor at Vive La Casa in Buffalo. After graduation, Elise will teach English in Europe for a year before starting a doctorate in international affairs, with a focus in peace and conflict resolution.
