RLL_cflaugh - Romance Languages & Literatures

IN RLL YOU CAN…
…explore and understand more fully regions and cultures
from multiple parts of the globe
…investigate what language as well as
texts like novels, plays, poems, and films
say about people, culture, and the world
…cultivate abilities to communicate in another language
…think critically about questions
that reach across time periods, places, and fields of study
WHY STUDY LANGUAGES,
LITERATURES, AND CULTURES?
“Multilingualism enhances cognitive and social
growth, [as well as] competitiveness in the
global marketplace”
- The United States Congress, Foreign Language Assistance Act of 1994
“[S]tudents who adopted an open and adaptive
attitude toward foreign cultures became
more able to make connections among
disparate ideas. [Their] multicultural
engagement also predicted the number of
job offers they received […].”
- Anne Murphy Paul, “How Studying or Working Abroad Makes You Smarter”
(4/29/14) Time
“The more respectful you are of the subtleties of
language, the more effective you are as a
negotiator or as a manager”
- Stephan Chambers, MBA program director, Oxford University's Saїd Business School
(from Tim Hume, Money Talks – In Many Different Languages,”
special to CNN,10/7/2011)
