RPS Assignment Sheet Name: List 1 Due: Roots, Prefixes and Suffixes The challenge of understanding a new word can often be simplified by carefully examining the word. Many words can be divided into three parts: a root, prefix and suffix. The root is the main part of the word. A prefix consists of one or more syllables placed in front of a word. The suffix consists of one or more syllables at the end of a word. Prefixes and suffixes modify or add to the meaning of the root. Not all words have prefixes and suffixes. A knowledge of common roots, prefixes and suffixes can give you clues to the meaning of an unfamiliar word and help make learning new words easier. Word Part derm (root) -logy (suffix) -ist (suffix) hypo- (prefix) -ic (suffix) Word Dermatologist Dermatology Meaning Skin The study of One who studies Below or under Of or pertaining to Definition One who studies skin.
