CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER READING POLICY SCHOOL YEAR 2011-2012
Students are required to read two (2) books; however, at least one specific book is required for each grade level. Students may choose
the second book from the list provided. The required book will facilitate additional discussion and study in each class during the school
year to complement the existing literature curriculum on each level. The summer reading tests for both books will be given on
Thursday, August 18, 2011, in all English classes. These tests will count for 10% of the student’s first quarter English grade.
STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO HIGHLIGHT AND TO TAKE CHAPTER NOTES WHILE READING THE SELECTIONS IN
ORDER TO FACILITATE REVIEW BEFORE TAKING THE TESTS IN THE FALL. Please be advised that books should be

I’m an Associate Professor at Purdue University. I’m writing to tell you about a summer camp that utilizes
videogame development as a vehicle to enhance & stimulate student performance
amongst 6th through 8th grade students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics) disciplines. The students learn to work in interdisciplinary teams to
build videogames for consoles (Xbox 360, PS 3), PC, and mobile phones (iPhone, Android).
The students also have the opportunity to conference with industry professionals such as
Eric Jeffery – Technical Director @ Tippet Studios [The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, X-Men
Origins: Wolverine, Cloverfield], Jen Bahan @ TD @ Rhythm & Hues [HOP, Red Riding
Hood, Percy Jackson & the Olympians].
 The camp will be organized by eAcademicBooks and hosted at the Dept. of Design and Communication
Technology on the IUPUI Campus in Indianapolis from July 11 to July 15.

STUDENT / ATHLETE PARTICIPATION
Effective immediately, advocated by Methodist Sports Medicine/IU Health, the sports medicine provider for
Cathedral Athletics, we will be adopting a new policy with regard to the timing of the completion/on file in Athletic
Office of the IHSAA Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (annually) and HIPAA (one time for four years) forms. The
attached document outlines the new policy.
Summary: Before any CHS student/athlete can participate in any preseason conditioning session, weight training,
tryouts or any physical activity associated with Cathedral Athletics, they must have both forms on
file with Maureen Sullivan in the Athletic Office. For the safety of the athlete and to help relieve
personal liability, coaches should not allow any athlete to participate in any physical activity associated
with their sport at any time.
The basic premise behind the “moving up” of the timing of this process is it just makes sense to
have the kids medically checked out BEFORE they begin any strenuous physical activity
associated with sports at Cathedral High School and not wait until the beginning of the actual
designated season. It also allows for some lead time, if a previously unknown/undiagnosed medical condition does exist,
to help eliminate the risk of physical participation and begin the course of treatment for the condition, to get them ‘back
playing’ as soon as possible.
REQUIRED ATHLETIC MEDICAL PHYSICALS
Any Cathedral High School student/athlete, who wishes to participate in any preseason,
summer conditioning/weights/camps or authorized practices for any sport MUST have a
completed an annual IHSAA Preparticipation Physical Evaluation Form and a HIPAA
Form (one time for four years) on file in the Athletic Office (Mrs. Maureen Sullivan) before
being eligible to participate. Physicals for the 2011-2012 school year (including summer) must
be completed after May 1, 2011.
All Cathedral High School student/athletes, who will be trying out for any sport, MUST have
the following forms:
 IHSAA Physical Form
 HIPAA Form
These forms are available in the CHS Athletic Office or on the school website (www.cathedral-irish.org) under
“ATHLETICS” and drop-down entitled ‘Forms’.
(Transfer students to Cathedral, who intend on participating in an IHSAA sanctioned sport, must file an IHSAA
ATHLETIC TRANSFER REPORT, to apply for eligibility to participate in an IHSAA sanctioned athletic contest.
Forms are available from Mr. Jim McLinn, Director of Athletics, in the Athletic Office.)
Once student/athletes have turned in all forms, they will be permitted to participate in all athletic conditioning
activities. Coaches may not allow a student to participate before all forms are on file in the Athletic Office.

successful summer camps program. We are happy to announce that 55 enrichment camps and 17 sports
camps will be available to all Indianapolis areas students. We have assembled an excited, enthusiastic
staff eager to provide campers with a fun-filled, educational week on our beautiful campus. Registrations

Choir News:
“Singers in Motion” Vocal Camp for 3rd to 8th graders from June 27 to July 1, 2011. Interested? Check the website!
Campers will be taught by outstanding singers of the Cathedral Choir Program under the direction of our choir director.
Instruction will include vocal and movement activities, mini voice lessons and ear training activities such as playing choir
chimes and rhythmic instruments. Camp will conclude with a Finale performance of all the campers on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Theatre News:
Cathedral Drama Camp
Cathedral Drama Camp is a two week summer camp designed to instruct interested theatre students going into grades 5,
6, 7, and 8 for the 2011-2012 school year in basic theatre concepts and acting principles in order to prepare them for what
to expect at the high school level, especially in the Cathedral Theatre Program.
The students will be coached by advanced students from the award winning Cathedral Theatre Department under the
direction of Mr. Terry F. Fox, Director of Theatre at Cathedral High School. Instruction will include basic vocabulary,
performance technique, improvisation, character study, and production. The camp will end with a performance recital by all
campers. All campers will receive a Cathedral Drama Camp
t-shirt. Enrollment will be limited to 30 students in each age group.

 Biology II Anatomy & Physiology will adopt the 11th edition of Memmler’s The Human Body in Health and
Disease. The 10th edition should NOT be resold.

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
Christ, our Good Shepherd, helps us to build foundations. “Lord, make me know your way. Lord, teach me your paths….He
guides the humble in the right path, he teaches his way to the poor.” Psalm 25. God leads us to the poor in humility and
compassion. Our service works, rooted in God, help us to meet all of God’s people as equals.
Class Service Projects Class service projects will take place in June and July. They become perfect service
opportunities for off-season sport groups and families. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in

Service Opportunities. Contact Mrs. Halstead if your group or family would have an interest in leading one of these projects
during the summer on the dates of Saturday, June 11 or July 9 for the Cathedral Soup Kitchen (10:30-1:30 on Saturday) , or
Wednesday, June 8 or Wednesday, July 13 at Anna’s House (4:00 PM-7:30 PM).
Habitat for Humanity Fundraisers The Habitat for Humanity chapter will be selling pizza each day immediately after the
morning session at the student entrance during the month of June summer school. This project, along with the snack sales
just completed during final exams, helps us to raise $5,000 which our chapter commits to the fall Habitat home that
Cathedral undertakes as an important community outreach each year. This is our ninth Habitat home that we will construct
this fall.
Senior Service Our Cathedral seniors have contributed more than 37,000 service hours to the Indianapolis community
and more through their acts of giving and support during their last four years. This equals more than eighteen persons in
payroll that has been donated through their volunteer work and support. Their insights gained have been immeasurable as
they conclude their four years at Cathedral and prepare to go forth to acquire their next four years of learning and
contribution. Congratulations, seniors, on your good works and heart.
Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all
hours received since the start of school. There is a small button in the upper right hand corner to view the
service hour detail and summary by year. For the 2010-11academic year, service hours for seniors were
due December 1, 2010 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2010-11,
freshmen, sophomore and junior hours were due March 1, 2011. The service hours for all students will be
shown on their fourth quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours earned
after April 1 may be credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis as
well. After Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service

Girls’ Track and Field
Academic All State 1st Team: Maria DeSanto and Katie Gordon
Honorable Mention: Stephanie Israel, Olivia Sedwick, and Lauren Williams
In Track & Field regional action on Tuesday, the Lady Irish represented our school well with some great
performances. The 4 x 100 relay team of Denisha Brown, Lexxus Betts, Aysha Jemison and Maddie Bryan
broke their own school record by posting a blazing 49.09. They will participate in next week’s state meet on
Saturday, June 4 at IU in Bloomington. Fifth places ribbons were earned by Tarasae Stancil in the 100 meter
hurdles and Emma MacAnally in the 1600 meter run. Stephanie Israel finish 7th in the pole vault and Jazzmine
McDonald was 10th in the high jump.
Boy's Track and Field
On Wednesday night the Cathedral Boys Track and Field team placed 3rd at the City Championships. First
place finishers for the Irish were Spencer Clapp in the 3200 meter run, the 4x 800 meter relay team (Will Bond,
Spencer Clapp, Vincent Halloran, and Jack Kelly), and Tre Roby with a new school record in the 200 meter
dash with a time of 21.82 seconds. A runner up finish in the 100 meter dash was turned in by Justin Taylor. Third
place finish in the discus was turned in by William Ash and Vincent Halloran in the 800 meters. Great job goes
out to all the other finishers as well. The Irish will next compete in the IHSAA Sectional next week at North Central.
Boy's Golf: On Tuesday night the Irish defeated Southport by the score of 154-187.
Baseball: On Monday the Irish won the sectional by the score of 8-1. They were led by Dillon Peters with a 3 hitter and a
Phil Mosey homerun. The regional will be Saturday, June 4 at Avon High School. (Times and opponent to be
announced.)

On Wednesday evening the Lady Irish lost their sectional opener to 6th ranked North Central by the score of 2-3 in
an extremely tight match.

Cathedral played Roncalli in their opening match. Fighting hard behind the setting from Carter Smith and the
offense attacks from Kevin Wissler, Eddie Stephens, Spenser Wilson, Andrew Alden our Irish stormed to a
quick lead in the first set and continued the fight to take the first set 25-23. Defense and hustle from the back row
leaders, Connor Lemke, Lucas Banta, Will Meulbroek, Austin George, John Uberto, Mike Venezia kept the
Irish in the game. Blocking specialist Stephen Baynes and AJ Jacobson contained the Rebels hard hitting
outside attackers and Luke Wojtalik started the Irish out strong in the fourth set with strong serving and back row
play. The match against Roncalli was hard fought and exciting. But, our Irish came up a little short in 4 sets: 25-23,
12-25, 16-25, 23-25. Roncalli continued their day upsetting Hebron in 5 and almost claiming the championship
crown falling to Carmel in a tough 5 set match.
Congratulation to Eddie Stephens for being selected to the All tournament team, being an All State Academic
selection and our representative to the South All – State Senior team!
Also receiving honors last night for the Irish are our Juniors: First team Junior All Stars – Andrew Alden, Lucas
Banter, Connor Lemke, Carter Smith, John Uberto. Junior All Star Alternates: Austen George and Kevin Wissler.

The All Star Matches are to be next Saturday June 4, at Lafayette Jefferson.
Boy's Lacrosse: Lacrosse finishes as state runners up.
On Saturday the team lost the state championship to Carmel.
Cathedral has participated in the Indiana Catholic Conference (ICC) since its inception in 2005. The ICC is made
up of Cathedral, Brebeuf Jesuit, St. Joseph’s, Bishop Chatard, Guerin Catholic, Roncalli, and Bishop Luers.
This year, Cathedral won the ICC crown (its fourth) with an undefeated season in conference play.

Girl's Lacrosse
On Wednesday the team lost to Park Tudor by the score of 12-7, which finishes their season.
On Monday the Girls Lacrosse team defeated Bloomington 15-4 in the first round of the Regional games for the
State Tournament. Eight different players scored goals with Sarah Peabody leading the way with 4 goals and
Bethany Wysocki adding 3. Megan Donnelly and Kaitlin Sims both scored 2 goals and Ellen Rowe, Rachel
Martin, Sarah Welsh, and Logan Snell scored 1 goal each.

Rugby: Rugby finishes 3rd Nationally!
Cathedral’s Royal Irish Rugby Society capped an incredible season by beating Penn in the Division I Indiana
State Rugby Championship Match up in Elkhart, IN! The Irish finish the season with a record of 14-1 with its
only loss to National Champion Highland, captured third place in the National Tournament, Ranked third in
the Nation, and Ranked first in State by winning the state championship! Click here for the State

This summer Cathedral students interested in IHSAA swimming should

Training will be an option on Tuesday/Thursday following swims until 8:45.
This summer program fee is $25 for non HC members payable to HCC.

Meditations: John 15:1-8
“He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit.” (John 15:2)
Ah, the parable of the vine and the branches! Who doesn’t derive some sense of comfort from Jesus’ words in this
passage? Who doesn’t get a feeling of reassurance when they read that Jesus invites them to remain in him?
But there is another side to these verses that can sound ominous: Jesus wants to prune us. He wants to strip away
those parts of our lives that do not bear fruit for him. This can be a frightening thought, especially when we stop to
consider how many times we say “no” to the Lord in the course of a week, or even a day.
If this sounds like you, don’t worry! Remember: Jesus told his disciples, and he tells you today: “You are already pruned
because of the word that I spoke to you” (John 15:3). Washed clean in the waters of baptism, we are already forgiven. We
are already justified. We are already citizens of heaven! All that remains is for us to embrace our citizenship more fully and
ask Jesus to reign over more and more areas in our hearts.
Think of the disciples. They had been with Jesus for three whole years, and still they needed some pruning. Matthew the tax
collector had already given up his cheating ways. Mary Magdalene had already been delivered of seven demons. And
James and John had already had to deal with their desire to be given special seats in Jesus’ kingdom.
No matter what had already been pruned from these disciples’ lives, there was still more to come. Peter would still deny
knowing the Lord three times. All the disciples would run away at Jesus’ arrest. And Thomas would refuse to believe his
brothers and sisters that Jesus had risen from the dead.
Jesus knew all this was going to happen, and still he entrusted his church to these fallible men and women. And he entrusts
it to us today. So don’t worry about the pruning that is still to come. Just remember that Jesus always welcomes you. He

believes in you, even when you don’t believe in yourself. He has already accepted you into his kingdom. All he wants to do
now is make you more and more fruitful!
“Jesus, I am so grateful for your love and mercy. Help me to remain in you, Lord, so that I can become more and
more pure!”
