Wednesday, May 25, 2011 Edition #40 Cathedral High School Vision Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution, will be the model for all high schools as she profoundly shapes the way students think, serve and lead. Dear Cathedral Parents, Cathedral High School Mission Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school, provides to a diverse group of students opportunities for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth through service and academic excellence. As part of our continuing mission to support Cathedral through fund-raising projects, the Mother’s club is instigating a used uniform sale to take place concurrently with the Used book Sale May 26th and May 27th. If you have any gently used uniforms (shirts, pants, sweatshirts) that you would like to contribute, you can either drop them off at the front office or bring them in during the collection time for used books on May 26th and May 27th. To help with this process, on Friday, May 27th (the last day of exams), we will have a jeans day, allowing your child to drop off uniform attire for the Used Uniform Sale. Since it is Friday, spirit shirts may be worn with the jeans. So, if your child has uniform shirts, pants, or sweatshirts that you will not be using again and are gently used, please drop them off with Tom Greer before the final exams. These can be a big help to families of other students in the future. Please note: the attire on Friday may be spirit shirts and jeans (no shorts, crop pants, sweatpants, etc.) Spring 2011 Underclassmen Final Exam Schedule Thursday, May 26 8:30 - final bell rings (prayer, pledge, attendance) 8:45 - 10:15 - Period 5 exam 10:20 - 11:10 - Period 7 review/study 11:10 - 11:55 – lunch (either sack from home or $1 per item here) 11:55 - 12:05 - in Period 6 exam room (use restroom, gather thoughts, return or turn in papers, etc.) 12:05 - 1:35 - Period 6 exam 1:40 - 2:30 - Period 8 review/study Dismissal at 2:30 Friday, May 27 8:30 - final bell rings (prayer, pledge, attendance) 8:45 - 10:15 - Period 7 exam 10:20 - 10:35 - in Period 8 exam room (use restroom, gather thoughts, return or turn in papers, etc.) 10:35 - 12:05 - Period 8 exam Dismissal at 12:05 Use these hyperlinks to find information quickly: 1 Advancement Announcements Athletics Band News Bookstore and Spirit Shop Cafeteria Menu Choir News College Information Congratulations Dates to Remember Mothers’ Club Prayers Service Smart Quote Theatre Tutoring Dates to Remember: May: Wed, May 25 Freshman Band Parent Meeting – Commons – 7:00 p.m. Thurs, May 26 Exams – Underclassmen periods 5 & 6 Used Uniform Sale – cafeteria Used Book Sale: 11:00 – 4:00 – Book drop off; 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Book Shop or Drop – in cafeteria Freshman Band Parent Meeting – Commons – 7:00 p.m. Spirit Shop Hours 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Fri, May 27 Exams – Underclassmen Periods 7 & 8 Used Uniform Sale Used Book Sale: 9:00 – 1:00 p.m. Shop only – in cafeteria End of 4th quarter; end of Sem. 2; dismissal at 12:05 p.m. Spirit Shop Hours 7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Mon, May 30 Memorial Day – no school Cathedral Retreat at Fatima Mon, 5/30 – Fri, June 3 - Spirit Shop CLOSED June: Sat, June 4 SAT Test Proficiency Testing from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Mon, June 6 Summer School begins Spirit Shop Hours 7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Tues, June 7 Spirit Shop Hours 7:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Wed, June 8 Proficiency Testing from 3:45 – 5:15 p.m. Thurs, June 9 Cathedral Connection’s Incoming Freshman Parent Meeting and Liturgy 101 – Auditorium 7:00 p.m. – New Parent Meeting 6:00 p.m. – Liturgy 101 for Non-Catholic New Parents Spirit Shop OPEN 6 – 9 p.m. LAST CHANCE SHOPPING! This means that for this week, sophomores are permitted to drive to and from school each day. I do ask that you park in the “H lot,” which is bounded by residences, Loretto Hall, and Cunningham Hall. It is very important that you remember that you must drive slowly on campus, and be sure to enter and exit carefully. We do not want any accidents for any of you during this exam week. ~~~~~ Class of 2012 Senior Pictures: You will be receiving a mailing from Prestige Portraits our school’s official senior portrait photographer the week of May 9th. Please take the time to read through this information for yearbook deadlines and photo specials. You may also find the information at www.prestigeindiana.com or call 317-829-2088. The class of 2012 senior portrait season officially begins June 1st. We have sent out our annual senior mailing and all upcoming seniors should have received it by now. In an effort to increase the communication of senior portrait information to students and parents we would like to use all communication channels available. Below is a link to our website and our senior portrait customer service number. Our website will have a digital version of the information in the mailing along with frequently asked questions, maps, contact information, and the ability to schedule appointments online. It would be great if we could add this link and number to your school website. I have attached a choice of banners that can be used on your website for the link. Prestige Senior Portraits Customer Service Number 317-829-2088 http://prestigeindiana.com 4 As many of you know, Liz Browning is organizing a mission trip to Africa in June, and a special part of that trip includes a visit to the Awet Secondary School in the Kambi ya Simba village. As you might imagine, the school doesn’t have many extras, including reserves of paper and pencils for use by the students. We’re hoping to temporarily fix that. Next week, as our students are cleaning out their lockers, there will be boxes in the hallway marked “School Supplies for Africa.” If folks wouldn’t mind encouraging kids to donate things they might be discarding, that would be super. We’ll take pens, pencils, colored pencils, partially-used notebooks, folders – whatever. We’ll have some parent volunteers in the hallways who will be willing to help and encourage the kids, too. ~~~~~ 1:1 computers at Cathedral: Here is the official information: Media Contact: Lisa Renze-Rhodes, Cathedral High School -- (317) 968-7352; (317) 777-9790 cell May 24, 2011 Cathedral eager, excited to begin universal technology access program Indianapolis, Ind. — Cathedral High School President Stephen J. Helmich announced today that beginning with the 2011-12 year, the school will begin moving to a 1:1 computing campus. The transition to this 1:1 program is part of a long-range strategic plan approved by the Board of Trustees in fall 2010, and will require a two-year implementation. Phase one, which will be implemented in the fall, will see Cathedral’s 96 teachers assigned a personal laptop; phase two, beginning with the 2012-13 school year, will require freshmen through juniors to purchase a personal electronic device. Seniors will be exempt, but encouraged to purchase a device. Products being considered, according to Rolly Landeros, chief information officer, the iPad2, the HP TouchPad or other Android handheld device. A decision on which device is most beneficial for student use will made by August. Teachers and administrators are collecting data about each tool to determine which would be most beneficial to Cathedral’s students. Helmich said the decision to move to 1:1 computing opens the door for Cathedral to take her already-robust academic reputation to a higher level, and to help prepare students for careers that may not even exist today. “When I think about this program, I think about the opportunities for even greater student engagement and for our educators to explore new heights of creativity in their teaching,” Helmich said. “We constantly strive for continuous improvement, for ways in which we are always making sure we are offering differentiated instruction and personalization— 1:1 computing blows the doors wide open for innovation.” A January 2010 study by the Journal of Technology, Learning and Assessment confirms just that. The report said schools associated with 1:1 programs see “increased student and technology use, increased student engagement and interest, and increases in student achievement.” The Journal also said success of 1:1 programs falls largely on how well the program is accepted by instructors, which Helmich said, offers further support as to why Cathedral is rolling out the implementation in phases, beginning with the classroom teachers. “It has been said by experts and we know that it is impossible to overstate the power of individual teachers in the success or failure of 1:1 computing. We have aggressive professional development strategies already in place that will give teachers all the confidence and support they require to make 1:1 computing a successful classroom venture,” said Julie Barthel, director of professional development. “We are going to have opportunities for lesson and application sharing; opportunities for our teachers who are currently very comfortable with technology to mentor those who may not be as familiar with all the tools 5 available; and of course ongoing support in the classroom and professional development. We want all our teachers, in all our departments, to make full use of these wonderful tools that are available.” Barthel added the 1:1 program will also allow teachers an opportunity to further differentiate instruction, which gives students additional added benefits. Barthel explained that a pilot program two years ago gave teachers an opportunity to apply for a laptop for classroom use. English teacher April Long was one of 43 who ultimately received a computer. “I love the mobility and flexibility of having the laptop,” Long said. “With it, we’re breaking down barriers and saying that technology is not only social, but very much educational.” Long said with her current tools, she has the convenience of mobility and is able to research lesson plans, update grades and communicate with parents wherever she might be. She is excited to be able to fully leverage tools that are currently in place at Cathedral, such as ANGEL (an online management curriculum delivery system similar to that used by colleges and universities) and about the opportunities that await once students are fully wired. “I could see a class together in one online site and students could debate one another, ask questions of their peers and me, and continue the learning process,” Long said. “Just for an example, to ‘visually represent’ is a language arts (curricular) standard for students. 1:1 devices will take brainstorming to a whole new level when students can be together in class and together in an online site pulling together all types of resources for a class project or presentation.” Junior Guy Valponi said he agrees that 1:1 is a game changer when it comes to how instruction is offered. “It speaks to the multi-functionality of how we (teens) work,” Valponi said, adding that the reduction in materials that students will have to carry from one classroom to the next is a benefit that shouldn’t be overlooked. “It’s nothing for my backpack to weigh 40 pounds. In addition to being more learning-friendly, I like the eco-friendly aspect of 1:1, too.” The $175,000 first phase of the program is being made possible thanks to funding from several longtime friends of Cathedral, Helmich said. The attached document outlines the new policy. Summary: Before any CHS student/athlete can participate in any preseason conditioning session, weight training, tryouts or any physical activity associated with Cathedral Athletics, they must have both forms on file with Maureen Sullivan in the Athletic Office. For the safety of the athlete and to help relieve personal liability, coaches should not allow any athlete to participate in any physical activity associated with their sport at any time. The basic premise behind the “moving up” of the timing of this process is it just makes sense to have the kids medically checked out BEFORE they begin any strenuous physical activity associated with sports at Cathedral High School and not wait until the beginning of the actual designated season. It also allows for some lead time, if a previously unknown/undiagnosed medical condition does exist, 8 to help eliminate the risk of physical participation and begin the course of treatment for the condition, to get them ‘back playing’ as soon as possible. REQUIRED ATHLETIC MEDICAL PHYSICALS Any Cathedral High School student/athlete, who wishes to participate in any preseason, summer conditioning/weights/camps or authorized practices for any sport MUST have a completed an annual IHSAA Preparticipation Physical Evaluation Form and a HIPAA Form (one time for four years) on file in the Athletic Office (Mrs. Maureen Sullivan) before being eligible to participate. Physicals for the 2011-2012 school year (including summer) must be completed after May 1, 2011. All Cathedral High School student/athletes, who will be trying out for any sport, MUST have the following forms: IHSAA Physical Form HIPAA Form These forms are available in the CHS Athletic Office or on the school website (www.cathedral-irish.org) under “ATHLETICS” and drop-down entitled ‘Forms’. (Transfer students to Cathedral, who intend on participating in an IHSAA sanctioned sport, must file an IHSAA ATHLETIC TRANSFER REPORT, to apply for eligibility to participate in an IHSAA sanctioned athletic contest. Forms are available from Mr. Jim McLinn, Director of Athletics, in the Athletic Office.) Once student/athletes have turned in all forms, they will be permitted to participate in all athletic conditioning activities. Coaches may not allow a student to participate before all forms are on file in the Athletic Office. ~~~~~ Camp Cathedral Summer 2011 - Register Online Today! I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.” Christ, our Good Shepherd, helps us to build foundations even when we may not be keenly aware of His support. “If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor.” Psalm 127 - Dear Lord, you have granted us different gifts for the building-up of your Body, the Church, in love. Give us generous hearts for the gifts of mutual compassion and help. Our service works must be rooted in God to build the strongest foundations. Class Service Projects Class service projects will take place in June and July. They become perfect service opportunities for off-season sport groups and families. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities. Contact Mrs. Halstead if your group or family would have an interest in leading one of these projects during the summer. Habitat for Humanity Fundraisers The Habitat for Humanity chapter has been selling snacks during exam week so thanks for your wonderful support. As well, during the month of June summer school, we will be selling pizza each day immediately after the morning session at the student entrance. These two projects help us to raise $5,000 which our chapter commits to the fall Habitat home that Cathedral undertakes as an important community outreach each year. This is our ninth home that we will construct this fall. Senior Service Our Cathedral seniors have contributed more than 37,000 service hours to the Indianapolis community and more through their acts of giving and support during their last four years. This equals more than eighteen persons in payroll that has been donated through their volunteer work and support. Their insights gained have been priceless and immeasurable as they conclude their four years at Cathedral and prepare to go forth to acquire their next four years of 15 learning and contribution. Congratulations, seniors, on your good works and heart. Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all hours received since the start of school. May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek to address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide. Meditations: John 15:1-8 “He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit.” (John 15:2) Ah, the parable of the vine and the branches! Who doesn’t derive some sense of comfort from Jesus’ words in this passage? Who doesn’t get a feeling of reassurance when they read that Jesus invites them to remain in him? But there is another side to these verses that can sound ominous: Jesus wants to prune us. He wants to strip away those parts of our lives that do not bear fruit for him. This can be a frightening thought, especially when we stop to consider how many times we say “no” to the Lord in the course of a week, or even a day. If this sounds like you, don’t worry! Remember: Jesus told his disciples, and he tells you today: “You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you” (John 15:3). Washed clean in the waters of baptism, we are already forgiven. We are already justified. We are already citizens of heaven! All that remains is for us to embrace our citizenship more fully and ask Jesus to reign over more and more areas in our hearts. Think of the disciples. They had been with Jesus for three whole years, and still they needed some pruning. Matthew the tax collector had already given up his cheating ways. Mary Magdalene had already been delivered of seven demons. And James and John had already had to deal with their desire to be given special seats in Jesus’ kingdom. No matter what had already been pruned from these disciples’ lives, there was still more to come. Peter would still deny knowing the Lord three times. All the disciples would run away at Jesus’ arrest. And Thomas would refuse to believe his brothers and sisters that Jesus had risen from the dead. Jesus knew all this was going to happen, and still he entrusted his church to these fallible men and women. And he entrusts it to us today. So don’t worry about the pruning that is still to come. Just remember that Jesus always welcomes you. He believes in you, even when you don’t believe in yourself. He has already accepted you into his kingdom. All he wants to do now is make you more and more fruitful! 27 “Jesus, I am so grateful for your love and mercy. Help me to remain in you, Lord, so that I can become more and more pure!” Blessings, Principal Cathedral High School dworland@cathedral-irish.org 28
