Mass Information:
Father Munshower would like to know if you would be interested in attending Mass here at Cathedral
one day a week. He is suggesting each Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Please do join us if you
are able to do so.
Congratulations:
Congratulations to Dillon Peters (’11), who was selected on Tuesday in Major League Baseball's Amateur Draft. He
was chosen by the Cleveland Indians in the 20th round of the draft. He
was the 608th player selected in the draft.
and…
In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The
Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today
announced Dillon Peters of Cathedral High School as its 2010-11
Gatorade Indiana Baseball Player of the Year. Peters is the first
Gatorade Indiana Baseball Player of the Year to be chosen from
Cathedral High School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic
achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Peters as Indiana’s best high school
baseball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award announced in June,
Peters joins an elite alumni association of past state baseball award winners, including Derek Jeter (1991-92, Kalamazoo
HS, Mich.), Roy Halladay (1994-95, Arvada West HS, Colo.), David Price (2003-04, Blackman HS, Tenn.), Chipper Jones
(1989-90, Bolles School, Fla.), Derek Lee (1992-93, El Camino HS, Calif.) and John Lester (2001-02, Bellarmine Prep,
Wash.).
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior left-handed pitcher outfielder led the Fighting Irish to a 24-2 record and the Class
4A regional tournament, scheduled to begin June 4 against Brownsburg. Peters posted an 8-1 record with a 1.71 ERA and
118 strikeouts in 59.2 innings pitched through 26 games. The 2010 Indianapolis Star Super Team Player of the Year, Peters
also owns a .375 batting average with 12 doubles and 23 RBIs entering the postseason.
Peters has maintained a 3.24 GPA in the classroom. He has volunteered locally on behalf of the American Red
Cross and Kids Against Hunger in addition to serving as a youth baseball coach and camp counselor.
“The thing that makes Dillon Peters stand out is his work ethic,” said Cathedral High head coach Rich Andriole. “He
isn’t afraid to put in the effort to make himself better constantly.”
Peters has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at the University of Texas this fall.
Congratulations, Dillon!

CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER READING POLICY SCHOOL YEAR 2011-2012
Students are required to read two (2) books; however, at least one specific book is required for each grade level. Students
may choose the second book from the list provided. The required book will facilitate additional discussion and study in each

both books will be given on Thursday, August 18, 2011, in all English classes. These tests will count for 10% of the
student’s first quarter English grade. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO HIGHLIGHT AND TO TAKE CHAPTER NOTES

STUDENT / ATHLETE PARTICIPATION
Effective immediately, advocated by Methodist Sports Medicine/IU Health, the sports medicine provider for
Cathedral Athletics, we will be adopting a new policy with regard to the timing of the completion/on file in Athletic
Office of the IHSAA Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (annually) and HIPAA (one time for four years) forms. The
attached document outlines the new policy.
Summary: Before any CHS student/athlete can participate in any preseason conditioning session, weight training,
tryouts or any physical activity associated with Cathedral Athletics, they must have both forms on
file with Maureen Sullivan in the Athletic Office. For the safety of the athlete and to help relieve
personal liability, coaches should not allow any athlete to participate in any physical activity associated
with their sport at any time.
The basic premise behind the “moving up” of the timing of this process is it just makes sense to
have the kids medically checked out BEFORE they begin any strenuous physical activity
associated with sports at Cathedral High School and not wait until the beginning of the actual
designated season. It also allows for some lead time, if a previously unknown/undiagnosed medical condition does exist,
to help eliminate the risk of physical participation and begin the course of treatment for the condition, to get them ‘back
playing’ as soon as possible.
REQUIRED ATHLETIC MEDICAL PHYSICALS
Any Cathedral High School student/athlete, who wishes to participate in any preseason,
summer conditioning/weights/camps or authorized practices for any sport MUST have a
completed an annual IHSAA Preparticipation Physical Evaluation Form and a HIPAA
Form (one time for four years) on file in the Athletic Office (Mrs. Maureen Sullivan) before
being eligible to participate. Physicals for the 2011-2012 school year (including summer) must
be completed after May 1, 2011.
All Cathedral High School student/athletes, who will be trying out for any sport, MUST have
the following forms:
 IHSAA Physical Form
 HIPAA Form
These forms are available in the CHS Athletic Office or on the school website (www.cathedral-irish.org) under
“ATHLETICS” and drop-down entitled ‘Forms’.
(Transfer students to Cathedral, who intend on participating in an IHSAA sanctioned sport, must file an IHSAA
ATHLETIC TRANSFER REPORT, to apply for eligibility to participate in an IHSAA sanctioned athletic contest.
Forms are available from Mr. Jim McLinn, Director of Athletics, in the Athletic Office.)
Once student/athletes have turned in all forms, they will be permitted to participate in all athletic conditioning
activities. Coaches may not allow a student to participate before all forms are on file in the Athletic Office.

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
Does our faith command our good works or do good works lead us to be more clearly centered in our Lord? “Whoever lives
the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.” John 3:21. We flourish as God
centered believers whether our actions of service lead our faith development or our spirituality forms our call to act and love.
Our service works, always grounded in God’s light, call us to meet all of God’s people with compassion and love.
Class Service Projects Class service projects will take place in June and July. They become perfect service
opportunities for off-season sport groups and families. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in
Service Opportunities. Contact Mrs. Halstead if your group or family would have an interest in leading one of these projects
during the summer on Wednesday, July 13 at Anna’s House (4:00 PM-7:30 PM). Research has shown that family service
projects are bonding core actions that reinforce good decision reasoning for teenage students and help a family to “walk the
talk.” Innumerable opportunities are listed below that can be developed as a family service projects.
Habitat for Humanity The Habitat for Humanity chapter will be selling pizza each day for $1.50 a slice immediately after
the morning session at the student entrance during the month of June summer school. This project, along with the snack
sales just completed during final exams, helps us to raise $5,000 which our chapter commits to the fall Habitat home that
Cathedral undertakes as an important community outreach each year. Cathedral will help to construct our ninth Habitat for
Humanity home this fall. Our Habitat for Humanity chapter, led by seniors Natalie Dickman, Grace Waltz and Claire Welch,
is committed to supporting low cost housing outreach and will host Shack City in the fall as a insightful and dynamic
fundraising experience in homelessness Thanks for your support of Habitat and look forward to our well attended
September 9 Shack City event.
Senior Service Our Cathedral seniors have contributed more than 37,000 service hours to the Indianapolis community
and more through their acts of giving and support during their last four years. This equals more than eighteen persons in
payroll that has been donated through their volunteer work and support. Their insights gained have been immeasurable as
they conclude their four years at Cathedral and prepare to go forth to acquire their next four years of learning and
contribution. Congratulations, seniors, on your good works and heart.
Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all
hours received since the start of school. There is a small button in the upper right hand corner to view the
service hour detail and summary by year. For the 2011-12 academic year, service hours for seniors are due
December 1, 2011 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2011-12, freshmen,
sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2012. The service hours for all students will be shown on
their fourth quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours earned after April 1
may be credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis as well. After
Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.

Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each
month. The balance of 2011 and 2012 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community
needs.

Service Reflection
They say it takes a minute to serve a special person,
An hour to appreciate them,
A day to love them,
But then an entire life to forget them.
May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek to
address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 2011-12 are due on March 1,
2012. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2011-2012 are due on December 1, 2011. Click here for
the 2011-12 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2011-12 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

Meditations: Acts 20:28-38
“We must help the weak.” (Acts 20:35)
What a tender moment! It is a final farewell from St. Paul, who had not only founded the church at Ephesus but
lived among the believers for three years. During that time, “God did extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul.”
As a result, “the word of the Lord grew and prevailed mightily.” (Acts 19:11, 20).
However, the elders were not crying in admiration of Paul’s accomplishments. Theirs were tears of affection for a brother.
And Paul, in turn, was concerned not for the continuation of his ministry but for the survival of “the whole flock … that [God]
acquired with his own blood,” and especially “the weak” (Acts 20:28,35).
The church in Ephesus had produced leaders like Apollos (Acts 18:24-28)—quick studies whose keen minds grasped the
significance of Paul’s message. Teaching such converts must have been very gratifying for Paul. However, he said nothing
here about this aspect of his ministry. His attention seems to be on those at the other end of the spectrum, the humble and
lowly who enjoy a special relationship with the Lord.
Every community, every congregation, even every family has its own “weak” members. Through whatever combination of
genetics, upbringing, sin, and hard luck, it is unlikely that they will ever be able to take care of themselves adequately.
These are the ones Paul singled out for special attention, for he knew the fundamental precept that those who are more
graced should care for those who are in need—not take advantage of them or ignore them.
Such a philosophy goes against our human nature. Those who move quickly find it irritating to slow down for those who lag
behind. It can be hard for someone with a quick mind to have to explain things to someone who just doesn’t get it. Instead of
putting ourselves in their shoes, we tend to imagine them in ours: “If that happened to me, I would surely have handled it
better.” But when we do this, we exercise the judgment that belongs to God and fail to extend his mercy—a mercy that
belongs to the strong and weak alike.
“Jesus, pour out special grace on the poor and needy. Let their cry pierce my heart. Show me how I can be your
arms to encourage them and lift them up.”
Blessings,
Principal
