Mandatory Requirements:

Holder of a valid and current full Victorian Drivers Licence with a minimum endorsement of
Heavy Ridged classification (non-probationary).

Comply with and hold a current Driver Certificate

Comply with and hold a current Working with Children Certificate.
Position Description:
This position is responsible for providing assistance to tradespeople to support the LV Bus Lines
business in delivering efficient bus services to the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland community.
Reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, this role is an important position within the LV Bus Lines
team. The role is relied upon to provide efficient and supportive services and will require autonomy
and flexibility in the approach to work. The role will also require a high degree of independence in
providing assistance and support to tradespeople and the workshop supervisor on matters relating
to the maintenance and up keep of our bus fleet.
Key Accountabilities:
In fulfilling the primary focus of the position, the incumbent will typically:

Perform routine maintenance such as lube service, changing and topping oils, change over road
wheels, checking replacing batteries, lubricating equipment and machinery.
Assist Workshop and Body section Tradespersons to identify mechanical and operational faults
and defects with company vehicles, and assist in carrying out necessary maintenance and
repairs in accordance with task priorities, and under the guidance of a qualified tradesperson
Carry out regular cyclical maintenance and services on company vehicles, complete and
maintain all compulsory records in accordance with compliance obligations under the guidance
of a qualified tradesperson
Assist with regular vehicle inspections by the Road Transport Authority and Road Safety
Inspections when required
Comply with Workshop Occupational Health & Safety standards and procedures
Carry out other workshop duties as required, including but not limited to; cleaning and washing
of buses, assisting tradespersons in the Body section, conducting vehicle recovery, assisting the
Morwell, Moe and Traralgon Workshop mechanics as required, general cleaning and workshop
maintenance duties
Under direction, use hand tools such as screw drivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges,
precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding
equipment, jacks and hoists.
Perform daily vehicle inspections (PTI) as directed on check list.
Prepare clean safe workplaces.
Load, unload and move any supplies and equipment as directed.
Assist in store operations such as stocking and preparing, distribution and packing.
Clean a/c filters, radiators and intercoolers.
Steam clean vehicles in preparation of repairs and annual inspections.
Carry out other tasks as directed.
Driver:










To operate school bus services in accordance to company rosters in a safe, competent, lawful and
timely manner
Respond to passengers in a polite and courteous manner and handle customer queries, complaints
and problems with a high degree of professionalism
Maintain clean and tidy buses, and adhere to company procedures in relation to start of shift safety inspections and end of shift procedures
Ensure that all vehicle faults and maintenance issues are reported in accordance with company
procedures
Report accidents and/or incidents promptly and in the manner prescribed by the company
Maintain appropriate dress standards as prescribed by company policy
Comply with reasonable requests by the employer to sight and hold copies of a current licence
and/or Driver certificate and inform the employer of any illness, medical condition, traffic or
criminal offence which may give cause to your Driver Licence and/or Driver Certificate being
cancelled or suspended, as soon as the condition or offence is known.
Comply with reasonable requests by the employer to sight and hold copies of your current WWC.
Drive charter buses and additional off roster services as requested by Supervisor.
Assist with the loading and unloading of luggage for school excursions and charter as required

Familiarise, and maintain a knowledge of and comply with company policies and procedures and
government regulations relevant to this position
Participate in company training and other appropriate training as required
Key Selection Criteria:











Sound knowledge of the mechanical workings of diesel engine vehicles and ability to identify
mechanical problems within these vehicles
Experience in carrying out mechanical repairs and cyclical maintenance on diesel engine vehicles,
preferably buses
Willingness to be adaptive and work within a multi-skilled environment
Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
Ability to drive, manoeuvre and control company vehicles to the competency levels and standards
required by road laws, government regulations and company procedures
Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse range of people
Written and verbal communication skills including the ability to read and understand workplace
policies and procedures, and complete forms and compliance documentation
Strong time management skills and ability to meet timetables without compromising safety
Capacity to manage conflict in a constructive manner and to solve problems
Knowledge of and compliance with current road traffic laws, laws and regulations relating to
driving heavy vehicles/commercial passenger vehicles and laws relating to the respective field of
driving i.e. Route services, school bus, charter.
Ability to sit for protracted periods and work in restricted spaces

Understanding of the public transport industry would be an advantage.
Qualifications in a mechanical field (Auto Electrician, Refrigeration, etc.)
Experience in operating two-way radio/communication system

Salary and Conditions:
Base rate will be in accordance with Grade 3 - School Bus Driver (Over 25 Passengers) as set out in
the LVBL Workshop Employment Agreement. The Terms and Conditions of Latrobe Valley Bus Lines
Workshop Employment Agreement 2014 will apply.

The position is based in Moe and it is expected that the Tradesman’s Assistant will reliably
commute to the depot.
From time to time there may be a requirement for travel including visits to the depots at
Morwell and Traralgon.
All new appointments are subject to a six month probationary period which may be subject to
review. In addition all appointments must pass all required pre-employment checks including a
mandatory police check and a medical assessment.
