ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Since its beginning in 2004, SJ Vietnam has had a lot of support from our partners,
networks, friends and excellent volunteers. SJ Vietnam is the General Secretariat of NVDA
since 2010 and a full member of CCIVS since 2006. It is also a partner of Alliance networks.
Thanks to the great partnership, the organization has gained big success with more than
5000 local members and 500 international volunteers each year.
In August 2010, it hosted a special project: the Patrimonito- World Heritage workcamp
sponsored by the CCIVS-UNESCO, which involved 20 international volunteers, and 2
members of SJ Vietnam in Ha Long Bay, the most famous World Heritage site in Vietnam. SJ
Vietnam successfully held big events for 1000 disadvantaged kids on Children’s day and
Mid-Autumn Festival. In December 2010, we celebrate International Volunteers’ day in
collaboration with UNV, VSO and a lot international NGOs. The director of the organization
is honor invited to be a keynote speaker of National Volunteers Conference in Vietnam by
National Youth Union.
In August 2010, we co-organized the 9th Asia-Europe Yong Volunteer Exchange with ASEF
and CCIVS-UNESCO in Ha Long City, which promotes and evaluates the impact of
volunteerism to communities. The event was warmly responded by both participants and
organizations. Besides, there are many events coordinated by our volunteers such as
Christmas Days, 5th Anniversary of SJ Vietnam, New Year Eve, Traditional cake festival on
Lunar New Year for poor people and disadvantaged children.
In 2011, the organization will have 20 workcamps, 17 long-term projects, 6 EVS projects
and some special group workcamps as well as numerous projects with local community for
social development.
For the achievements, we are sincerely thankful to our partners, friends, sponsors,
donators, volunteers, and especially to Solidarités Jeunesses, UNV, and Vietnam National
Youth Union, the World Bank, NVDA, CCIVS-UNESCO,Alliance, and their members.
SJ Vietnam warmly thanks “Un Etai pour le Vietnam”, a French student association based in
Toulouse which has been coordinating with SJ Vietnam in the project “Youth House-School
for less-fortuned and street children at Fisher Village in Hanoi, Vietnam”.
We are looking forward to strengthening partnership with you and welcoming your
volunteers to SJ Vietnam’s projects for sustainable development in beautiful Vietnam.

I. SJ VIETNAM INTRODUCTION
SJ Vietnam (www.sjvietnam.org) is an international youth NGO (Non-Governmental
Organization) that promotes values of solidarity, peace, tolerance through young
citizenship projects to improve society during and after the voluntarism. It was set up in
2004 by and for national and international young volunteers.
SJ Vietnam is an independent Vietnamese branch of SJ France, a full member of CCVIS
(UNESCO) and NVDA, a partner of Alliance. SJ Vietnam is a non-political and non-religious
organization which opens to everybody without any distinction of nationality, race,
philosophy, financial resources, and education or sex.
1.1.
HISTORY
On December 24th 2004, with the help of UNV Vietnam, YAP, NVDA and Un ETAI Pour Le
Vietnam, SJ Vietnam was established. The volunteering organization started as an informal
cooperation between Miss Do Thi Phuc, Vice-president of Vietnam Youth Volunteer Club
and Mr. Pierre De Hanscutter, a Belgian UNV working for UNDP Vietnam.
In June 2006, with the support of a sister organization in France, Solidarités Jeunesses, and
Miss Do Thi Phuc became the official director of the organization SJ Vietnam, Mr. Pierre De
Hanscutter became the Honorific President and official European representative. At the
same time, SJ Vietnam is an official member of Network for Voluntary Development in
Asia-Pacific (NVDA) and a full and active member of the Coordination Committee for the
International Voluntary Service (CCVIS) at UNESCO.
In January 2008, SJ Vietnam was the co-host organization for 7th NVDA General Assembly
in Vietnam and welcomed young volunteers of AEYVE from Asia and Europe.
In 2009, 5000 Vietnamese volunteers have been official members of SJ Vietnam. Around
500 international volunteers joined our activities each year. SJ Vietnam is currently one of
the biggest international workcamp organizations in Vietnam.
1.2.
GOALS

The SJ Vietnam slogan reads: “Tình nguyện để sẻ chia, học hỏi và trưởng thành”, which
can be translated as: “Volunteer for sharing, learning and being responsible”. SJ
Vietnam organizes workcamps and long-term projects, campaigns of social integration,

Workcamps organized by SJ Vietnam seek to provide an experience that connects
solidarity, intercultural learning, and community life to help disadvantaged, street, poor
and blind children, needy children in paediatrics hospital and disabled, old, homeless
people.
Special workcamps are festivals and events. For Vietnamese festivals such as the

Long-term and EVS projects (from 2 to 12 months) are organized in Hanoi, Hai Duong,
Nam Dinh with topics related to social issues, environment to support sustainable
development. Long-term volunteers will live and work like local people.

SJ Vietnam organizes regular workshops, seminars, conferences and training for its
members, which provide young volunteers with knowledge in global education including
conflict management, leadership, intercultural learning and volunteering skills, etc.

II. WORKCAMPS IN VIETNAM 2011
SJ Vietnam’s workcamps vary from environment, education, art, construction to
social work. In some workcamps, the hosts or the volunteers organize
discussions, excursions, exchange parties, school visits and sports programs. The
workcamps usually last from ten days to two weeks, and three weeks or four weeks
with Vietnamese camp leaders. SJ Vietnam encourages people with difficulties and
volunteers from developing countries to join our workcamps. Please contact us
for more details.
When the volunteers are accepted, we will send you an updated info sheet or you
can
download
it
directly
from
our
info
sheet
server
at
http://infosheet.sjvietnam.org
We also use e-vet database (www.e-vet.org) to manage our projects, you can
send your volunteer applications directly to e-vet.
General information about our international workcamps:
 Age Limit: In general our volunteers should be about 18 years old. There are
no maximum age limits for most of our workcamps
 Work: Workcamps usually last for two weeks. Working hours are usually
about 30-35 hours a week (5-7 hours a day; 5 days a week). Any exception is
mentioned in the project descriptions.
 Accommodation: Local community centers, schools, youth centers or other
houses owned by the communities. The accommodations are usually in a basic
condition and include a shared kitchen and bathroom. In some cases, we will
have to take a shower with only cold water.
 Food: Food will be provided and volunteers are expected to do their fair
sharing of the cooking/cleaning.
 Camp Language: The common language is English, although the volunteers
are encouraged to learn the basics of the local language.
 Camp Leaders: The camp leaders have to represent the link between the
hosting community and the group of volunteers. They coordinate the work,
organize free time activities, plan excursions, shopping and cooking sessions.
Apart from these responsibilities, they are equal to the other volunteers. Most of
our camp leaders are local people and we are very open minded in hosting
international leaders from other organizations.
 Participation Fee: We are a non-profit organization with no external income,
so we charge volunteers coming from developed countries participation fee of
6
www.sjvietnam.org
+84.4.22154993
160
Euro/workcamp/volunteer,
180-220
Euro/group
workcamp/volunteer and volunteers should pay in Euro only. The fee
includes accommodation (you can watch a video of one of our camp places at:
http://vietnam.solidaritesjeunesses.org/video/volunteers/visit%20of%20SJ%2
0House.avi), all costs of the projects (e.g. free food, scholarship, donation,
festivals for disadvantaged children and people, materials, training for locals),
local transport, local food; and 20% of these fees will be used for SJ Vietnam
administration (staff salary, rent, phone office work, etc). You can see more
details in our Volunteer Handbook. Participation fees have to be transferred to SJ
Vietnam’s bank account at least 2 weeks before volunteers come to Vietnam.
 Insurance: SJ Vietnam provides a basic insurance for only our coordinators
during the camp. We strongly recommend that the volunteers who plan to travel
beyond these dates purchase a separate insurance.
 Some practical matters: Depends on project, we highly recommend the
volunteers to bring a sleeping bag, basic work clothes, hiking shoes, swimming
suits as well as summer or warm and waterproof clothes depending on seasons.
Volunteers are also encouraged to bring information about their country, photos,
music, songbooks, games, musical instruments, ingredients to cook special food
from your countries, etc.
 Volunteers with special needs: Our camps are open to everyone. If you have
volunteers with special needs, please contact us. We will do our very best to find
a way to host them.
 Information sheets: We will send out detailed information sheets with
practical information and camp details the same day we accept the volunteers.
 Our website www.sjvietnam.org : We encourage all our partners and
volunteers to check out our website for more information about our projects.
There you will find more detailed information and photos from our workcamps.
 Getting to the campsite: Vietnam‘s public transportation is expensive and not
very efficient. We will arrange a minibus trip to most of our workcamps. The
participants can choose the minibus option to reach the workcamp location or
traveling independently using public transport (e.g. buses, flights). The minibus
fee will be published in the information sheet. However, beware that traveling
with our minibus is usually the most convenient option. This is a great chance for
7
www.sjvietnam.org
+84.4.22154993
the volunteers to meet before the camp starts and discover some of Vietnam‘s
little-known and less-traveled areas on their way to the camp. Every participant
who wishes to take the minibus has to inform us before arriving Vietnam.
 Study theme: In most of our workcamps, we will have a study theme. We will
talk about the environment and the importance of daily eco-friendly practices.
We believe that it is necessary to take action at a local level to address this crucial
global issue. Although climate change may appear as a complex issue, there is a
wide variety of simple actions that every individual and community can take to
make a difference. Energy conservation, educational and reforestation programs,
implementation of a walking culture instead a driving-everywhere culture, waste
reduction for example, are just a few of the simple every-day options that allow
people to have a strong impact on nature conservation.
Participate in our workcamps to have great fun and enjoy amazingly
charming Vietnam!

Volunteers are expected to help the children in the welfare center with their
daily tasks as well as organizing games and leisure activities for them. Volunteers
are encouraged to help the center with painting the dormitories, the doors etc.

employment opportunity for them mainly in Hai Duong province and Northern
provinces of Vietnam. These are some general purposes:
To help the disabled, poor and disadvantaged children to be able to integrate into
the community, to provide a basis for equal life opportunities, and to give them
free education and to improve their education level
Giving opportunities for them to take part in different activities, exchange their
ideas, deal with the complexes, abate the disabled pain and improve their selfconfidence in life.
The center will have vocational training programs depending on each object and
also provide them with employment opportunities, which are suitable for their
health; so that they can have the opportunity to live by themselves.
3.1.2. SJV-G2 Giao Thuy Kindergarten
Type: KIDS/SOCI/DIS
Location: Nam Dinh (150 km far from Hanoi)
Project description
Giao Xuan kindergarten was established in August 1980. There are around 70
children who are aged between 12 months and 5 years coming to the
kindergarten every day. Volunteers are expected to organize games for the
children, teach them some songs, and dance. The Kindergarten really needs to be
renovated so volunteers will help with building new fences, new walls, new
ceilings, etc for the children. Volunteers will organize activities for the kids here
who are very young but very excited to play with other people. Furthermore,
volunteers are expected to raise fund to support the children at the kindergarten.
Hosting organization
This is a traditional kindergarten which is built long time ago for the children to
come every day. They aim to take care and educate the children with very basic
knowledge before they really start school.
About 70 children here are from 12 months to 5 years old. Many children coming
every day, but there are not enough rooms for playing or living. There are only 8
rooms here, 4 rooms for 12 months to 3 year-old children and 4 rooms for the
rest of the children. Besides, the condition of the kindergarten in general is not
good enough for the children (the walls are too old, no mattresses, no blankets,
17
www.sjvietnam.org
+84.4.22154993
no beds, no cabinets, lack of toys, etc.). They really need help to improve the
condition for the kids.
3.1.3. SJV-G3 Dong Cay Village
Type: KID/SOCI
Location: Dong Cay Village, Quang Ninh Province, near Ha Long Bay, the most
beautiful tourist attraction in Vietnam (200 km from Hanoi)
Project description
Volunteers are expected to help the local people in teaching basic computer skills,
English and playing and taking care the small children (by organizing some
games and leisure activities) while their parents are farming. Volunteers are also
encouraged to help the commune with painting the Cultural house (a place that
people gather in some days for meeting, discussing or organizing activities for
children), cleaning the Monument, planting trees…
Furthermore, volunteers are also encouraged to provide the children with
information about health, facts about the countries volunteers are coming from,
and to teach them some basic and funny English and other languages.
3.2. COMMON INFORMATION ABOUT GROUP WORKCAMPS
Duration
1-4 weeks (SJ Vietnam and the partner can discuss and find the best time for both
sides to organize this)
Food
Food will be cooked by volunteers during the work camp (except Hai Duong
welfare center, the center will cook for us ). Volunteers will be split up into teams
and the cooking team will go to the local market to buy food and cook for the rest
of the group. The volunteers will eat local ingredients. Some special food from
your country could be difficult to find here or could be expensive.
Accommodation
Volunteers will stay at the center ( in Hai Duong) or have home-stays with very
simple and basic accommodation. Volunteers will live with the local people and it
is a good chance for them to deeply understand about the Vietnamese people’s
lives. Sleeping bags, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, pillow, and blankets are
18
www.sjvietnam.org
+84.4.22154993
needed (except in Dong Cay village: people here don’t use mattress in the
summer, so volunteers are preferred to bring their own air-beds).
Study part
We would like international volunteers to spend an evening having a workshop,
to introduce about their country and people. This would help our children and
volunteers to have a deeper understanding about the culture. Vietnamese
volunteers will also have one evening to introduce about their country, culture
and people.
(For example, we will organize one evening for volunteers to wear AO DAI – our
traditional dress and introduce international volunteers about this tradition.
International volunteers can do the same with their food, their life style, etc
International volunteers will teach English to local volunteers and children and
in return learn Vietnamese from them. Volunteers can teach the children when
they are playing and working together. The children don’t have many chances to
communicate with foreigners. Therefore it will be a great chance for the children
to improve their self-confidence or practice their English.
Leisure activities and cultural visit
The volunteers will have the opportunity to visit local beauty spots together with
Vietnamese volunteers. During the week, evenings will be used for cultural
exchanges, games and parties such discotheque, night market, Vietnamese
students live music show, etc. In some evenings all the volunteers can organize
discussions of cultural diversity and hot topics of young people like the
awareness of HIV/AIDS in society, ways of greetings and sounds of animals in
different languages.
What to bring
Some snacks from your country. Toys and balloons, books or note book, drawing
paints and kids’ stuff.
Bring some traditional costumes, and prepare a performance for the cultural
show.
The group work camp will include:
+ One-day orientation (Introduction about hosting organization including SJ
Vietnam and its local partner, about the work, project visits, welcome party, etc.)
+ Trip to Hanoi for one day.
+ Farewell party
19

4.9. SJV-L1109: ORGANIZING LEISURE ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN AT
NATIONAL PEDIATRICS HOSPITAL
Type: KID/ SOCI
Language: English
Age:18
Work & activities: The National Hospital of
Pediatrics (NHP) is specialized in treating for
children coming from different provinces in
Vietnam. The hospital consists of 22
departments, with the number of permanent
treating patients amounting up to 10001200, age rages from infancy to nearly 17
years old. The majority of them are afflicted with difficult to cure ailments, such
as hematologist, nephrologists… Most patients come from low-income families in
which parents are working in agriculture sector, leading a rather poor life.
31
www.sjvietnam.org
+84.4.22154993
During the treatment period, the patients do not have opportunities to
participate in common leisure activities, they often have to suffer from stress of
staying long time in hospital, so having fun and activities to reduce worry and
sadness while they are in hospital is necessary. SJ Vietnam needs volunteers to
organize games and collective activities for the children (e.g.: singing, drawing,
magic shows, etc).Volunteers can prepare a performance with the children every
month. They can also help the Vietnamese volunteers to build playrooms, and a
library.
Objectives: The volunteers will support the children by playing with them.
Through the games volunteers will help to distract the children from their
physical and mental pain/ hurt and they will not feel so much afraid of being in
hospital. SJ Vietnam hopes that the lovely children in the hospital will have sweet
and comfortable time in hospital with both Vietnamese and international
volunteers.
Accommodation & Food: The volunteers will stay in a Vietnamese host family in
Hanoi. They will be provided with either a private room in the house or a private
bed in a shared room. Volunteers need to take sleeping bag, mosquito net, pillow,
