In August 2010, it hosted a special project: the Patrimonito- World Heritage workcamp sponsored by the CCIVS-UNESCO, which involved 20 international volunteers, and 2 members of SJ Vietnam in Ha Long Bay, the most famous World Heritage site in Vietnam. SJ Vietnam successfully held big events for 1000 disadvantaged kids on Children’s day and Mid-Autumn Festival. In December 2010, we celebrate International Volunteers’ day in collaboration with UNV, VSO and a lot international NGOs. The director of the organization is honor invited to be a keynote speaker of National Volunteers Conference in Vietnam by National Youth Union. In August 2010, we co-organized the 9th Asia-Europe Yong Volunteer Exchange with ASEF and CCIVS-UNESCO in Ha Long City, which promotes and evaluates the impact of volunteerism to communities. The event was warmly responded by both participants and organizations. Besides, there are many events coordinated by our volunteers such as Christmas Days, 5th Anniversary of SJ Vietnam, New Year Eve, Traditional cake festival on Lunar New Year for poor people and disadvantaged children. In 2011, the organization will have 20 workcamps, 17 long-term projects, 6 EVS projects and some special group workcamps as well as numerous projects with local community for social development. SJ VIETNAM INTRODUCTION SJ Vietnam (www.sjvietnam.org) is an international youth NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) that promotes values of solidarity, peace, tolerance through young citizenship projects to improve society during and after the voluntarism. It was set up in 2004 by and for national and international young volunteers. SJ Vietnam is an independent Vietnamese branch of SJ France, a full member of CCVIS (UNESCO) and NVDA, a partner of Alliance. SJ Vietnam is a non-political and non-religious organization which opens to everybody without any distinction of nationality, race, philosophy, financial resources, and education or sex. 1.1. HISTORY On December 24th 2004, with the help of UNV Vietnam, YAP, NVDA and Un ETAI Pour Le Vietnam, SJ Vietnam was established. The volunteering organization started as an informal cooperation between Miss Do Thi Phuc, Vice-president of Vietnam Youth Volunteer Club and Mr. Pierre De Hanscutter, a Belgian UNV working for UNDP Vietnam. In June 2006, with the support of a sister organization in France, Solidarités Jeunesses, and Miss Do Thi Phuc became the official director of the organization SJ Vietnam, Mr. Pierre De Hanscutter became the Honorific President and official European representative. At the same time, SJ Vietnam is an official member of Network for Voluntary Development in Asia-Pacific (NVDA) and a full and active member of the Coordination Committee for the International Voluntary Service (CCVIS) at UNESCO. In January 2008, SJ Vietnam was the co-host organization for 7th NVDA General Assembly in Vietnam and welcomed young volunteers of AEYVE from Asia and Europe. In 2009, 5000 Vietnamese volunteers have been official members of SJ Vietnam. Around 500 international volunteers joined our activities each year. SJ Vietnam is currently one of the biggest international workcamp organizations in Vietnam. 1.2. SJ Vietnam organizes workcamps and long-term projects, campaigns of social integration, training seminars, and international solidarity programs. All volunteers, both Vietnamese and international, are warmly welcomed to join and participate in the activities provided by SJ Vietnam. Furthermore, Vietnamese volunteers are sent abroad to participate in volunteering projects by our partner organizations all over the world. 1.3. ACTIVITIES 1.3.1. Workcamps Workcamps organized by SJ Vietnam seek to provide an experience that connects solidarity, intercultural learning, and community life to help disadvantaged, street, poor and blind children, needy children in paediatrics hospital and disabled, old, homeless people. Special workcamps are festivals and events. For Vietnamese festivals such as the International Children’s Day, Mid-Autumn festival, Christmas and Lunar New Year, SJ Vietnam organizes events to celebrate these meaningful occasions for less-fortuned children and people to give them equal opportunity, happiness and lots of smiles. 1.3.2. Long-term Volunteer Projects and EVS: Long-term and EVS projects (from 2 to 12 months) are organized in Hanoi, Hai Duong, Nam Dinh with topics related to social issues, environment to support sustainable development. Long-term volunteers will live and work like local people. 1.3.3. Training courses, seminars and conferences SJ Vietnam organizes regular workshops, seminars, conferences and training for its members, which provide young volunteers with knowledge in global education including conflict management, leadership, intercultural learning and volunteering skills, etc. 1.3.4. WORKCAMPS IN VIETNAM 2011 SJ Vietnam’s workcamps vary from environment, education, art, construction to social work. In some workcamps, the hosts or the volunteers organize discussions, excursions, exchange parties, school visits and sports programs. The workcamps usually last from ten days to two weeks, and three weeks or four weeks with Vietnamese camp leaders. SJ Vietnam encourages people with difficulties and volunteers from developing countries to join our workcamps. Please contact us for more details. When the volunteers are accepted, we will send you an updated info sheet or you can download it directly from our info sheet server at http://infosheet.sjvietnam.org We also use e-vet database (www.e-vet.org) to manage our projects, you can send your volunteer applications directly to e-vet. General information about our international workcamps: Age Limit: In general our volunteers should be about 18 years old. There are no maximum age limits for most of our workcamps Work: Workcamps usually last for two weeks. Working hours are usually about 30-35 hours a week (5-7 hours a day; 5 days a week). Any exception is mentioned in the project descriptions. Accommodation: Local community centers, schools, youth centers or other houses owned by the communities. The accommodations are usually in a basic condition and include a shared kitchen and bathroom. In some cases, we will have to take a shower with only cold water. Food: Food will be provided and volunteers are expected to do their fair sharing of the cooking/cleaning. Camp Language: The common language is English, although the volunteers are encouraged to learn the basics of the local language. Camp Leaders: The camp leaders have to represent the link between the hosting community and the group of volunteers. They coordinate the work, organize free time activities, plan excursions, shopping and cooking sessions. Apart from these responsibilities, they are equal to the other volunteers. Most of our camp leaders are local people and we are very open minded in hosting international leaders from other organizations. Participation Fee: We are a non-profit organization with no external income, so we charge volunteers coming from developed countries participation fee of 6 www.sjvietnam.org +84.4.22154993 160 Euro/workcamp/volunteer, 180-220 Euro/group workcamp/volunteer and volunteers should pay in Euro only. The fee includes accommodation (you can watch a video of one of our camp places at: http://vietnam.solidaritesjeunesses.org/video/volunteers/visit%20of%20SJ%2 0House.avi), all costs of the projects (e.g. free food, scholarship, donation, festivals for disadvantaged children and people, materials, training for locals), local transport, local food; and 20% of these fees will be used for SJ Vietnam administration (staff salary, rent, phone office work, etc). You can see more details in our Volunteer Handbook. Participation fees have to be transferred to SJ Vietnam’s bank account at least 2 weeks before volunteers come to Vietnam. Insurance: SJ Vietnam provides a basic insurance for only our coordinators during the camp. We strongly recommend that the volunteers who plan to travel beyond these dates purchase a separate insurance. Some practical matters: Depends on project, we highly recommend the volunteers to bring a sleeping bag, basic work clothes, hiking shoes, swimming suits as well as summer or warm and waterproof clothes depending on seasons. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring information about their country, photos, music, songbooks, games, musical instruments, ingredients to cook special food from your countries, etc. Volunteers with special needs: Our camps are open to everyone. If you have volunteers with special needs, please contact us. We will do our very best to find a way to host them. There you will find more detailed information and photos from our workcamps. Getting to the campsite: Vietnam‘s public transportation is expensive and not very efficient. We will arrange a minibus trip to most of our workcamps. The participants can choose the minibus option to reach the workcamp location or traveling independently using public transport (e.g. buses, flights). The minibus fee will be published in the information sheet. However, beware that traveling with our minibus is usually the most convenient option. Every participant who wishes to take the minibus has to inform us before arriving Vietnam. Study theme: In most of our workcamps, we will have a study theme. We will talk about the environment and the importance of daily eco-friendly practices. We believe that it is necessary to take action at a local level to address this crucial global issue. Although climate change may appear as a complex issue, there is a wide variety of simple actions that every individual and community can take to make a difference. Energy conservation, educational and reforestation programs, implementation of a walking culture instead a driving-everywhere culture, waste reduction for example, are just a few of the simple every-day options that allow people to have a strong impact on nature conservation. SJV-G1 Hai Duong welfare center Type: KIDS/SOCI/DISA Location: Hai Duong province (50 km from Hanoi) Project description In collaboration with the welfare center in Hai Duong province, 50 km far from Hanoi, SJ Vietnam would like to run voluntary projects in the welfare center. The Welfare center was established in 1982 in Hai Duong city. There are around 1000 children coming from different parts of Hai Duong province. The centre is made up of disadvantaged children, children with disabilities at different level and orphans. All of them come from poor families and live in very poor living conditions. Volunteers are expected to help the children in the welfare center with their daily tasks as well as organizing games and leisure activities for them. Volunteers are encouraged to help the center with painting the dormitories, the doors etc. and to decorate the walls along the corridor Furthermore, the volunteers have the opportunity to join the children in drawing. They will help the nurses to take care of the infants as well. They are also encouraged to provide the children with information about health, facts about the countries volunteers are coming from, and to teach them some basic and funny English and other languages. Hosting organization The center aims to give children with disabilities as well as the poor and disadvantaged free and non-formal education, to provide vocational training and 16 www.sjvietnam.org +84.4.22154993 employment opportunity for them mainly in Hai Duong province and Northern provinces of Vietnam. These are some general purposes: To help the disabled, poor and disadvantaged children to be able to integrate into the community, to provide a basis for equal life opportunities, and to give them free education and to improve their education level Giving opportunities for them to take part in different activities, exchange their ideas, deal with the complexes, abate the disabled pain and improve their selfconfidence in life. The center will have vocational training programs depending on each object and also provide them with employment opportunities, which are suitable for their health; so that they can have the opportunity to live by themselves. 3.1.2. SJV-G2 Giao Thuy Kindergarten Type: KIDS/SOCI/DIS Location: Nam Dinh (150 km far from Hanoi) Project description Giao Xuan kindergarten was established in August 1980. There are around 70 children who are aged between 12 months and 5 years coming to the kindergarten every day. Volunteers are expected to organize games for the children, teach them some songs, and dance. The Kindergarten really needs to be renovated so volunteers will help with building new fences, new walls, new ceilings, etc for the children. Volunteers will organize activities for the kids here who are very young but very excited to play with other people. Furthermore, volunteers are expected to raise fund to support the children at the kindergarten. Hosting organization This is a traditional kindergarten which is built long time ago for the children to come every day. They aim to take care and educate the children with very basic knowledge before they really start school. About 70 children here are from 12 months to 5 years old. Many children coming every day, but there are not enough rooms for playing or living. There are only 8 rooms here, 4 rooms for 12 months to 3 year-old children and 4 rooms for the rest of the children. Besides, the condition of the kindergarten in general is not good enough for the children (the walls are too old, no mattresses, no blankets, 17 www.sjvietnam.org +84.4.22154993 no beds, no cabinets, lack of toys, etc.). They really need help to improve the condition for the kids. 3.1.3. SJV-G3 Dong Cay Village Type: KID/SOCI Location: Dong Cay Village, Quang Ninh Province, near Ha Long Bay, the most beautiful tourist attraction in Vietnam (200 km from Hanoi) Project description Volunteers are expected to help the local people in teaching basic computer skills, English and playing and taking care the small children (by organizing some games and leisure activities) while their parents are farming. Volunteers are also encouraged to help the commune with painting the Cultural house (a place that people gather in some days for meeting, discussing or organizing activities for children), cleaning the Monument, planting trees… Furthermore, volunteers are also encouraged to provide the children with information about health, facts about the countries volunteers are coming from, and to teach them some basic and funny English and other languages. 3.2. This would help our children and volunteers to have a deeper understanding about the culture. Vietnamese volunteers will also have one evening to introduce about their country, culture and people. (For example, we will organize one evening for volunteers to wear AO DAI – our traditional dress and introduce international volunteers about this tradition. International volunteers can do the same with their food, their life style, etc International volunteers will teach English to local volunteers and children and in return learn Vietnamese from them. Volunteers can teach the children when they are playing and working together. The children don’t have many chances to communicate with foreigners. Therefore it will be a great chance for the children to improve their self-confidence or practice their English. Leisure activities and cultural visit The volunteers will have the opportunity to visit local beauty spots together with Vietnamese volunteers. In addition to a high bio-diversity, Xuan Thuy National Park is also known as an important platform for migratory birds including the black-faced spoonbill, one of the world’s endangered species, other important marine species and mangrove ecosystem. Has about 1000 mentally and physically disabled and disadvantaged children coming from many parts of Hai Duong province, the center aims to provide compulsory education and vocational training courses to create employment opportunities for the teenagers. The center has a wide variety of courses for children ranging from 6 years old to 18 years old. For example, children between the ages of 6 to 12 are provided with educational courses, and the older children are able to attend vocational training courses at the center. Volunteers are supposed to organize activities with the children and support the local staffs. Volunteers will play games with the children, take care of infant orphans and organize activities such as funny games, collective activities, children songs…etc. The voluntary work at the center is quite hard and it requires high motivation and patience from volunteers. The orphan infancies are having taking care of nannies, but the problem is that the nannies do not know how to take care of the infancies in best ways. They really need to have consultants to help them in building nutrient table for the kids. The center is not only aim at giving good care with good food but they also wants to have consultancy about the method to take care of the kids in all aspects in general. Many disadvantaged and disabled children are having free training courses at the center. They hope to have more communication with society, which is the reason why they want to learn foreign language which can help them in finding jobs or searching document for their studying. Teaching English is a need of the center together with the need of having computer classes. Besides, the center hopes to have more leisure activities for the people who are learning and staying there. Volunteers are supposed to work together with staffs of the center to build nutrient table for the kids, give English and computer classes as well as organize leisure activities for the disadvantaged and disabled people staying and learning at the center. We need teachers and volunteers to give lessons to the children and cook meals for 20 children every day. SJ Vietnam combines these activities with projects to help disadvantaged people at Fisher village who are very old and live in slum-boats on Red river by giving them free food, supporting medicine for their disease, providing water filter, toothpaste, second-hand warm clothes etc. Volunteers will join a team of young local people and SJ Vietnam coordinators to manage the projects and participate in daily activities at the school. Volunteers need to have a very high motivation, very good communication skills and to be able to be independent in your work. There has been many volunteers teaching English there so English level of the children are quite good, but they do not want to stop at basic level so they want to improve it at higher levels, also the young kids want to learn the language because the older ones are able to communicate in English, which encourage a lot the younger ones in learning this language. The school needs volunteers who can teach English to children and create a friendly environment in order to encourage them to use the most popular and useful language in Vietnam. High motivation, patient, enthusiasm and independence are necessary soft skills volunteers need to have to work with the children. But the kids really want to have integration as much as possible so that they understand more about out-side world which they do not have much idea on it. They also do not have tutor on foreign languages so volunteers are expected to give free English lessons for them. Volunteers will have support from one local organization called Sun-kid which is working on education. The organization really cares to education for disadvantaged kids so volunteers will work with them as well. Objectives: SJ Vietnam wants to cooperate with different organizations/ communities to give disadvantaged kids as much care as possible. SJV-L1111: TAKING CARE OF ORPHANS AT BO DE PAGODA. Type: SOCI/ KID Language: English Age: 18+ Work & activities: Bo De pagoda is a place of Buddhist worshipping. Regarding the religion, the female monks always try their best to help people and always act in a peaceful and respectful way toward others. According to the Buddhist belief, pagodas always welcome all kinds of people with different situations and help them to find out how to solve their problems. There are about 100 children living in the pagoda. The pagoda also is a place for homeless people. The director of the pagoda, Monk Thich Dam Lan, wants to give all the children the chance to have an education. It needs volunteers to take care of babies, organize leisure activities for them, teach them how to protect surrounding environment of the pagoda. 33 www.sjvietnam.org +84.4.22154993 Especially the kids at the kindergarten of the pagoda need to have careful take-care and teaching from experienced volunteers. Now they are at starting level to learn games, figures, alphabets…etc so it is good to have volunteers who are good at that. It has developed projects offering improved education for poor children in the Highlands; vocational education for the disabled; traditional playgrounds for poor children; an educational program for disadvantaged youth; and teaching English to children through active learning. It has also managed to establish many professional partnerships that support and promote its program activities. E & C NGO focuses on following areas: education and culture, community projects, disadvantaged communities. There are some main tasks for volunteers to support work at E & C NGO : Develop, facilitate and evaluate specific projects to meet the needs of disadvantaged communities. Provide educational opportunities to children, disadvantaged youth, university students, people with a disability, parents and other groups. Develop projects that introduce the best of modern knowledge of teaching and educational methods to Vietnamese audiences and professionals. Liaise and partner with professionals, government, other NGOs and international organizations for the benefit of disadvantaged communities in Vietnam. SJV-L1113: TEACHING ENGLISH FOR POOR AND ETHNIC MINORITY CHILDREN IN CEC CENTER IN PHU YEN Type: SOCI/KID/EDU Language: English Age: 18+ Work and activities: CEC English Center belongs to Phu Yen Continuing Education Center. CEC is an environment for children aged from 6-15, and an English supportive center for adults, who take part in in-service training courses and associate training courses with universities and colleges throughout the country. Established in 2007, the CEC English Center aims to teach English to children aged from 6 to 16. We support free courses and learning materials for poor and ethnic minority learners. The center also helps students who are attending in-service training courses develop language skills. Children come mainly from the outskirts of Tuy Hoa city. Volunteers will teach English to children and create a friendly environment in order to encourage them to communicate in English. They should know that the most important part of this project is teaching English. Volunteers will be the teachers and they are expected to teach grammar and other aspects of English to their own classes which may have more than 10 students in each. Volunteers encourage the students to learn English, for example, by organizing leisure activities in English (audio, books, etc…), by providing the self-study materials. Furthermore, they can help the teachers and staffs with other tasks in the school. Objectives: One effective way to learn English is communicate with people coming from English speaking countries but children there do not have many chances to talk with foreigners, so this is a good opportunity for them to practice language skills. Volunteers will have training to have managing skills on voluntary field and will get working schedule form the coordinators. Running workcamps, building working schedule for short-term volunteers, making orientation as well as evaluations, updating the info-sheets of workcamp department, setup regulations, build strategies for workcamp department ….etc will be main work of volunteers who take over this position. This position also requires volunteers to promote the image of SJ Vietnam, and build manual work template for next volunteers who will be in charge of this place. Objectives: Learning how to manage the work of workcamp department, how to set up and have good relationship with partners both local and international ones. Volunteers will have working schedule given by long-term volunteer coordinators. Volunteers is supposed to help the coordinators to manage the work of long-term department such as coordinating the relationships among long-term volunteers and SJ Vietnam staffs to ensure a good and friendly working environment, to work with both local & international partners, to build strategies for the department’s development. Volunteers will take part in LTV meeting every Thursday evening and staff meeting every Friday evening with all the long-term volunteers and SJ Vietnam staffs to discuss the SJ Vietnam’s projects. A report will be made every LTV meeting. Working on projects of SJ Vietnam with LTV department also will be the main work of volunteers. Objectives: To understand more about working in a Vietnamese NGO and give out solutions to improve the organization, as well as promote SJ Vietnam’s projects and its activities. SJV-L1117: SUPPORTING IN TAKING CARE OF MENTALLYIMPAIRED CHILDREN AT ASPIRATION CENTER Type: KID/ SOCI/DIAS Language: English Age:18+ Work & activities: “Art Orientation and Mentally-disabled children integration Center” is established in 02/01/2009 and is now helping 14 intellectually handicapped children at the age of 4-23. This is a center which takes care and educates children with intellectual disabilities. The center gives an opportunity for mentally disabled children to have special education to help them develop self-help, language and communication skills. From 1-5 pm, the children at the center can be divided into 2 groups. The first one is relatively heavily handicapped group who can’t speak and some even can’t hear. Volunteers will help them improve their muscular strength by taking them for a walk, teaching them to do simple exercises and to play simple games. The other one is less handicapped group. Volunteers will organize English class, teach them to play simple games, sing songs, draw and many things else. After that, you can teach them to play sports such as basketball in the backyard. Objectives: With recreation activities, those children have more chance to integrate into communities instead of living their whole life in their family houses. With English of the children improved, they can speak that language better and they can use it more efficiently, which will help them a lot in their studying. The English and leisure activities will bring knowledge and happiness to children so that they will have optimistic view with life around them and they will become useful people for our society. SJV-L1118: SUPPORTING ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT AT BEN TRE COLLEGE Type: ENVI/SOCI/RESEARCH Language: English Age: 20 + Work & activities: The Research Center of Science and International Relations is the first research center for social science and humanity, directly under Ben Tre College. The major objectives of the research center are to conduct research activities that contribute to the development of society particularly in the field of social work, education, culture and humanity. Currently, the group of staff members and students of Ben Tre Collage are working on a project at Vam Ho Bird watch, one of two biggest bird watch in Mekong Delta. The project named “Notebook to protect Vam Ho Bird watch” aims at building a supervising systems of the area through which famers living near the bird watch are encouraged to take notes of changes in the bird watch. Training session and workshop are provided as well to help local people get familiar with the notebook. All notes will be collected during the project duration and be presented in 3 big conferences. By these activities, the project can help to raise awareness of local people on nature protection. Volunteers will work a supporter for the center in implementing “Notebook to protect Vam Ho Bird watch” project as well as English teacher for staff members. Also, the volunteers are expected to support students of Ben Tre College, local staff to improve English skills and take an active role and effectiveness of 41 www.sjvietnam.org +84.4.22154993 program coordination, assisting in co-coordinating and implementing international programs, communicating partners: experts, government, NGOs and international organizations for the benefit of vulnerable communities in Vietnam. Volunteers will work around 6 hours/ day and have 2 days off/ week Volunteers will have timetable for their work, they will work with help of Vietnamese people at project site. Volunteer shall be provided with sufficient and well-arranged working facilities, including a private corner in an air conditioned room, a computer with Internet access, a shared printer and many helpful and friendly colleagues. Objectives: In general, the center hopes to give better education and development to community. The aims of the project: Implementing successfully the environmental project, bringing visible outcomes to the local community. Training local staff and students with skills and methods to better coordinate international programs. Co-coordinating activities and services of are improved with new and creative approaches. Holding seminars, conferences, forums and short-term training coursed within the Center of Scientific Research and Relations. Using the media as a tool for community development. Volunteers can spend the holidays exploring the culture and nature of this province by following village paths, flower gardens or floating local markets. SPECIAL ATTENTION All volunteers who work in Hanoi will stay in host families. The volunteers working in other provinces will have accommodation provided by our local partners and have stay in our volunteers’ house during their orientation week in Hanoi. The participation fee for long-term projects is 250 EUR/month/volunteer. All participation fee should be transferred to SJ Vietnam’s bank account at least 2 weeks before arrival. Long-term volunteers will follow Vietnamese national public holidays calendar during their volunteering with SJ Vietnam.
