Why did the Americans win at the battles of
Trenton and Princeton?
1. Washington and the Americans were
reeling from a string of early defeats
(NY and Canada) and he needed to
regain some momentum they had
gained in Ticonderoga and Boston
2. On Dec 25, 1776, Washington led
surprise attacks across the Delaware
River to Trenton, where the Americans
captured hundreds of Hessian
mercenaries. Later (January) he
defeated a small British force at
Princeton
