Contributing Disciplines to Behavioral Sciences SOCIOLOGY Deals with social group behavior and social process. The units of study are societies, institutions, organizations and groups. Focuses on the influence of people on one another. Social interaction is the main concern. Attitudes, communication and leadership are central themes. Study on culture and environment has helped us understand differences in fundamental values, attitudes, and behaviour between people in different countries and within different organisations. Development of Behavioral Sciences in Turkey • The term “Industrial Sociology”was used instead of “Behavioral Sciences”between the years 1950 and 1960.The term ‘Behaviorial Sciences’had not been used in Turkish literature yet. Academic circles have been in effort to promote ‘human relations approach’to the Turkish administors. • Psychology approach, developed in the period 1960-1970. The number of articles about sociology and social psychology increased. In 1968 a Behavioral Science department was founded in İ.Ü and Business Psychology and Sociology of Work lessons were given there. Development of Behavioral Sciences in Turkey • During 1970-1980, a basis of data was formed for Industrial Behavioral Science and Organizational Behavior . Starting from 1970’s and after 1980 the Human factor come to the fore. • After 1980,opening of the Faculty of Open Education and broadcasting of Behavioral Science lessons on TV,updated the issue and course was named Behavioral Sciences and Organizational Behavior. Development of Behavioral Sciences in Turkey In Turkish Industrial life during 1950-1970,managers were mostly unaware of human relations approach. Between1970-1980 only a few researchers were given opportunities.After 1980,the big companies have started to give importance to human relations.Industrial Psychology and Behavioral Sciences consultants were hired,training programmes,seminars and conferences were held in companies and some companies established their own psychotechnic labs .
