Lesson Plan Guide Teacher Candidate: John Mathis Date: February 8, 2015 Grade and Topic: Lesson: 2nd grade social studies Length of 60 minutes Mentor Teacher: Joe Weaver School: University of Memphis - IDT 3600 UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA: This lesson plan is part of a unit plan on technology in America. LESSON OBJECTIVE: ● 1. Given the text from the social studies textbook, TLW construct a timeline of evolution of technology over time. (Bloom’s taxonomy: comprehension) ● 2. Given examples from the textbook, TLW choose which uses of technology to include, such as adding car to the timeline but leaving off another invention. (Bloom’s taxonomy: knowledge, comprehension) ● 3. After choosing examples, TLW write a brief description next to the technology on the timeline. (Bloom’s taxonomy: knowledge, synthesis) STANDARDS ADDRESSED: 2.38 Construct a timeline to depict the evolution of a technology over time. Some suggestions are as follows: automobiles, planes, refrigeration, telecommunication, computers, and television. MATERIALS: ● Social studies textbook (2nd grade edition) ● Artist paper ● ● ● Glue Pencils/pen Computer for research ● http://www.voyagesthroughtime.org/technology/index.html BACKGROUND and RATIONALE: ● Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of the evolution of technology by creating a timeline equipped with pictures and brief descriptions. ● This lesson is a continuation of TN social studies standard 2.37 ● ● How do you expect to build on this lesson in subsequent lessons? We will refer to the timeline created here to explore deeper into inventions and evolving. PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE: ● Introduction: Begin by displaying a 1980s cell-phone and a current phone on the overhead. ● ● Provide some brief background on various technological inventions (computer or phone) Give students a few minutes to read over the evolution of technology in their text books, then have the class read a portion together (automobile) ● Procedures: Prior to research (15 minutes) Teacher Procedures: 1. After the introduction, refer to the pages the students read and ask them to name a technological invention or advancement made before they were born. Student Procedures: 1. Students read the pages in their textbook about technology evolution. 2. They then choose specific examples to conduct further research on the computer for their timelines. At the Computer (25 minutes) Teacher Procedures: 1. Make sure the students navigated to the correct website for research. 2. Make sure the students stay on task 3. Ask a student to tell you about a technology they have chosen. Student Procedures: 1. 2. 3. 4. Open internet browser and type in website URL. Research specific technologies they have previously chosen. Create brief descriptions to write near pictures on timeline Print out a few technologies they have chosen for the timeline. Making Timeline (20 minutes) Teacher Procedures: 1. Make sure students are labeling timelines in chronological order 2. Make sure descriptions match-up to picture. 3. Ask a student “did the car or computer come first?” Student Procedures: 1. Write in chronological order the technologies they have chosen 2. Write a brief description with year next to each picture 3. Make sure timeline is organized and neat. ● ● Closure: Explain technology is constantly improving and expanding and that it is beneficial to society. For an “exit ticket,” ask them to write down what technology will look like in 25 years ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: Rubric 10pts Timeline assignment Student clearly displays 6pts Student displays some 2pts Student displays no knowledge of evolving technology. Displays clear illustration of progression of technology in timeline, with visual pictures. Materials & Resources knowledge of evolving technology. Displays some illustration of progression of technology in timeline with pictures. All materials are utilized Most materials are used efficiently and effectively somewhat effectively to to produce a complete complete timeline timeline. knowledge of evolving technology. Displays no illustration of progression of technology with no pictures. Materials are not used or used ineffectively/ inefficiently to complete timline MODIFICATIONS: I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
