Company History Timeline
1887: John W. Nordstrom left his home land (Sweden) to NYC
1897: He moved to Alaska in pursuit of seeking gold, earned
$13,000 in a gold mine stake and then returned to Seattle
1901: John Nordstrom & a new friend, Carl Walling, opened their
1st shoe store called “Wallin & Nordstrom”
1928: John retired and sold his share of the company to this two
sons: Everett and Elmer Nordstrom
1960: Nordstrom had eight stores located in Washington and
Oregon. The downtown store in Seattle became the largest shoe
store in the country.
1968: The three bro’s decided to retire and handed the company
over to the 3rd Nordstrom generation
1971: WENT PUBLIC
1988: Nordstrom made the big move to the East Coast and
opened a beautiful new store in Virginia
