FITNESS THROUGH MOVEMENT SYLLABUS PED 100 FALL 2011 Instructor: Coach Bill Westphal Email: billwestphal@pointloma.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION - Development of personal fitness through assessment, theory, and practice; introduces principles of conditioning, nutrition and stress management leading to a lifetime of fitness and desirable health practices. TEXTBOOK (REQUIRED) – GET FIT STAY FIT, by William E. Prentice. COURSE OBJECTIVES - The primary objective of this course is to acquaint students with the knowledge and activities required to make wise decisions about a lifetime of health and fitness. GENERAL EDUCATION - This course is one of the components of the General Education Program at PLNU, under the category of “Exploring an Interdependent World, Physical Fitness and Nutrition.” By including this course in a common educational experience for undergraduates, the faculty supports an introduction to the natural and social sciences as tools for exploring the world, with emphasis on collecting and interpreting empirical data for both theoretical and practical purposes. ACCOMMODATIONS - All students are expected to meet the standards for this course as set by the instructor. However, students with learning disabilities who may need accommodations should discuss options with the instructor during the first two weeks of class and provide approved documentation and verification of need. The Academic Support Center is available to students for a variety of tutorial needs. COURSE REQUIREMENTS - PED100 is a one unit lab class. The expectation for this class is two hours per week in class plus two hours per week outside of class. A. Knowledge (200 points) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Points will be deducted for late papers. B. Attendance and Participation (200 points) 1. Attendance (150 points) - Roll will be taken every day. Five points will be deducted for each absence and two points for each tardy. 2. Participation/Effort (50 points) - BE HERE, BE HAPPY AND HUSTLE! NOTE: Come to every class dressed out in athletic gear. No school clothes or street shoes. Change before class at home or in the locker room. Do not change in the restrooms. No one ever got fit by just talking about it . . . Ya gotta sweat!
