Rev. 8/15/11 2011 – 2012 CLUB INFORMATION Amnesty International (grades 9,10,11,12 Mrs. Kennedy Room 255 Amnesty International is a community service, non-profit organization, which promotes human rights awareness. Its goal is to educate people about social, political, and economic inequalities and to do its bAest to reduce those inequalities whenever possible. Activities have included preparing food for homeless children, writing cards of encouragement to political prisoners, and planning Student Action week here at the high school. Asian Film Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mrs. Beauchamp-Teese Room 275 Explore the world of Asian film! Begin or expand your experience with films from Asia. Our exploration will include Japanese anime, Korean comedy, and Chinese drama. Astronomy Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Farina, Mr. Mazreku & Mr. Delaney Planetarium Students will get an in-depth look into observational astronomy with the goal of attending before and after school star parties. They will use our 8" Meade LX10 EMC Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope, our 12" Orion XX12i Intellescope Truss Dobsonian, Celestron Skyscout, as well as any other home telescopes and binoculars to observe a handful of objects. Students will use Starry Night to learn about the sky, stars, galaxies, and nebulae. They will learn how to set up and operate a telescope, learn how to navigate their way through the sky, and create simulated observations. Bicycling Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Enck & Mrs. Snyder Room 029 Bicycling club is for those students who enjoy bikes and biking. During the year we will ride the school bikes when weather permits. We will also host a variety of speakers on bike related topics. During the winter, we will watch bike themed videos. Depending on the interest of members, we will also try to participate in off-campus organized rides and/or observe and promote National Bicycling Month activities in May. All skill levels are welcome. Biology Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mrs. Boyer & Mrs. Myers Room 217 The Bio club is for those who are interested in the life sciences. Participants will choose activities which might include experimenting, dissecting, setting up and maintaining aquaria, honors biology projects, science fair projects, planning field trips and biological photography. Board/Card Games Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Mast Room 108 Board games is for students who would like to relax and have fun playing games such as: Boggle, Uno, Scrabble, Chess, Checkers, Connect 4, Hangman, Battleship, and/ or Backgammon. Break Dancing Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Reynolds Auditorium Lobby The Break Dancing group is a club established by students and for students. The purpose of this club is for students to come together to refine break dancing skills and/or work toward a dance routine for events such as the Pep Rally. Character & Leadership Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Melnyk & Mr. Rilatt Room 129 This club will actively participate in learning about and developing core character values and strengthening leadership abilities, through group involvement, media and biographical studies. Chess Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Manning Room 019 Chess Club is a club for students who enjoy the challenge and strategy of playing chess. Any student interested in playing chess is welcome, beginners or experts. Students will have the opportunity to play each other in tournaments and in friendly matches. Students who are new to chess will have the opportunity to learn the basics and begin building skills. Interested students MUST currently be enrolled in or have taken Computer Programming here at the high school. The students will work individually or in small groups to complete projects using a competition format, similar to what you would find in a college situation. Students will be exposed to various programming languages throughout the year. If successful, we may look into some local competitions in the area to test our skill against other high schools and colleges. Cultural Diversity Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Lee & Mrs. Noll Room 008 Explore other cultures through music, games, foods, clothing, etc. Our mission is to develop friendships and educate ourselves, and others as we learn to respect and enjoy other cultures. Another purpose of the club is to provide academic support for students whose first language is not English. Fellowship of Christian Students Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Schulz & Mrs. Hoffman (monitors) Students maturing through student-led times of worship and fellowship with others. Auditorium French Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mrs. Bard Room 206 Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in a French class. This club is for students who want to learn more about Francophone cultures and the French language. We will watch French and African films, prepare and sample the cuisine of many countries, play French games, share past travel experiences to Francophone countries - all those things we don’t have enough time to explore in class. Games Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mrs. Krady & Mr. Jacoby Room 278 If you need a time to relax, unwind and have fun, this club is for you. Students will play board games in large or small groups. Gay-Straight Alliance Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mrs. Luther & Mrs. Peffley Room 227 The MTHS Gay-Straight Alliance provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, discuss issues related to sexual orientation, and work to end homophobia. German Club(grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Holler Room 207 German Klub is back! German club promotes the German language and culture in the school and community. Students will visit elementary schools, have luncheons, watch movies, and speak Deutsch! Guitar Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Schlosser Room 157 This club is for students currently enrolled in a guitar lab or guitar ensemble. Students enrolled in Guitar Lab 2 or 3 for the spring semester are also eligible to join this club. Guitar Club will offer additional time for guitar students to practice and rehearse. Students have the option to practice proficiencies, prepare for recitals, rehearse guitar ensemble music, or develop a personal repertoire. The instructor will be available to help individual students and work with ensembles. In addition, specific club periods will be devoted to related topics such as guitar maintenance, equipment, practice techniques, or artist profiles. Gym (grades 9,10) Mr. Landis & Ms. Wilson Arena For boys and girls entering 9th or 10th grade. This club is for students who enjoy physical education class and are looking for these types of activities. History Movie Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Baker Room 131 The purpose of this club is to watch and discuss various movies and films that deal with different history related topics. Improvisational Theater Club Mrs. Fritz Room 162 Learn theater skills through improvisational games! Laughter and increased stage confidence are guaranteed! This is FUN!!" Anyone is welcome to join as we will have a wide range of difficulty levels and puzzles. Junior Firefighters (grades 9,10,11,12) Mrs. Stephan & MT Fire Rescue Personnel Room 264 The Fire Rescue Club will expose students to the occupation of firefighters and what duties they perform. Students will participate in hands-on activities alongside firefighters and learn the skills they use every day. The hands-on activities will include learning about and using protective equipment and gear, using hose lines, operating rescue equipment, learning first aid skills and a variety of other fire related skills. There will be demonstrations throughout the school year with various types of equipment including fire rescue, EMS, Hazmat, and medical helicopters. The club will participate in a full-scale exercise at the end of the school year. Lion’s Leo Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Kantz & Mr. Lance Wagner Room 030 The Lion’s Leo Club is a service organization and is open to both male and female teenagers with a willingness to do community service. Please note that it is a requirement to participate in some Saturday service projects. Math Competition Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. DeSantis & Mr. Klopp Room 179 This club will serve as a hub to practice for, disseminate information about, and discuss strategies concerning various math competitions held throughout the year, both internal and external. If you are interested in participating in any math competitions this year, this club is for you! MTPA Production Club (grades 9, 10,11,12) Mr. Mark Wagner Room 140 This club is open to active members of Manheim Township Performing Arts who are interested in devoting their club periods to going an extra mile for their organization. Time will be spent completing a wide range of projects focused on preparing for upcoming productions. Operation Smile (grades 9,10,11,12) Mrs. Lamp & Mrs. Metzger Room 144 “Operation Smile” is a service-based organization with the primary focus of fundraising to donate toys and supplies to fund operations of facial deformities, such as cleft palate, in underdeveloped countries. PAWS (grades 9,10,11,12) Ms. Short, Ms. Sergovic & Mrs. Clemons-Casillo Library (Preservation of Animal Welfare & Safety) As acts of animal cruelty continue to be perpetrated in our society and pet populations continue to increase exponentially, it is important for people of all ages to learn how to accept and fulfill their responsibilities to companion animals and to appreciate the value of all living things. PAWS club actively promotes and practices responsible pet ownership through humane education and animal welfare activities as well as fundraising for PAWS of PA (Lancaster). Photography Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Ertzgard Room 168 The Manheim Township Photography Club is for any student who has an interest in photography at any level, digital or film. The club will meet to discuss and practice techniques in the hope of improving the quality of the photography of the group. It is a goal to have this group use their honed skills in someway to provide a service to the community. Political Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Rutledge and Ms. Spangler Room 252 Manheim Township Political Club (MTPC) is a club meant to help students form their own political views and act upon them. The club also works to provide members opportunities to meet with politicians from all levels of government. The club has held political conventions, debates on topics chosen by members, political cartoon contests, etc. The club has gone on field trips in the past and hopes to do so in the upcoming year. The organization will be open to male students for volunteer sign up and will also be subject to administrative, staff and faculty referral/placement. The club guide/practice will be the Colin Powell Leadership Primer with additional structure provided by the school sponsor, Assistant Principal Shannon Mayfield, during the standard club times. Salsa Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mrs. Rittler Room 106 Interested in learning some new dance moves? Come out and join the Salsa Club. We will be learning the basic steps of many Latin dances such as Salsa, Merengue and Bachata. We will also be exploring the basic Ballroom Dances such as the Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Swing and Rumba. You do not need any dance experience to participate in this club; however, a willingness to step out of your comfort zone and try new things is a must! Scrapbooking Club Mrs. Hyde Room 218 Scapbooking is a fun way to exercise your imagination and artistic scrapbook club ability! This club will afford you the time and guidance to organize, journal, and display your photos in fun and creative ways. Novice scrapbookers are encouraged to join! Students must supply their own scrapbooking materials. Senior Early Release Office Seniors will have the option of early release on club days provided they complete the appropriate paperwork and meet the requirements. Silent Reading Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mrs. Hoffer Room 249 This club is for students who would like a quiet environment for pleasure reading. Students can bring any material to read for pleasure. By joining the club, students agree to maintain a silent reading environment. Ski Video Editing Team Club (SVET) (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Oberg & Mr. Bear Room 279 Students will use video editing software to make short films using video footage taken by the ski club with their helmet camera. Students may also conduct interviews, combine music and video footage, and work on website design. Please note: students do NOT need to be a part of ski club to join S.V.E.T. or vice versa. Spanish Club (grades 9,10,11,12) Mrs. Brubaker Room 208 Spanish Club is for Spanish students looking to have more opportunities to experience the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. The activities will vary based on the interest of the students, but will include music, film and art. Spanish students of all levels are welcome! Students Against Starvation (grades 9,10,11,12) Mrs. Vincent Room 212 Students against Starvation helps to provide relief from hunger on the local, national, and international level. Through the Crop Walk, the food drive, a 30 Hour Fast, and other fund raisers, the club contributes to local food banks, America’s Second Harvest, and Heifer International. In addition, members participate in local soup kitchens and help out with the after-school program at the Boys and Girls Club. Study Hall (grades 9,10,11,12) Rooms to be determined Study Hall is an option for students who would like additional time and a quite space to complete schoolwork. Students will be expected to come prepared for independent and quiet work. Technology Student Association (grades 9,10,11,12) Mr. Nolt & Mr. Campbell Room 189 TSA member applications must be picked up outside Rm. 189. Completed applications MUST be returned by Thursday, September 2, 2010. Students must still complete on-line club registration process. TSA membership offers exciting opportunities for competition and leadership. Compete at regional, state, and national competitions in system control, animatronics, medical technology, dragster design, video gaming, flight challenge, and more technology related contests. Students in this club will work on 3 specific areas: sports coverage for morning broadcast, video yearbook production, creative film project. In addition, students will plan and host a Film Festival to be held in early spring. Walk in Love Club (grades 10,11,12) Mr. Fennimore & Mrs. Leaman (monitors) Room 259 Walk in Love is a club for students who wish to demonstrate their commitment to Christianity by doing service around the school. Students may choose to serve the school by baking food, cleaning around the building, providing positive messages throughout the school, and being an appropriate support to those in need.
