Dear ASB/ Officer Applicants,
Thank you for your interest in running for an Associated Student Body executive council or class officer
position! Being an ASB or class officer is an important job that requires a lot of time, effort, dedication, and
responsibility. It is also very rewarding as it gives you great memories, opportunities to have fun, leadership
skills for your resume, and gets you involved in the decisions that affect every student here at Kennedy.
This application is used to apply for the following elected position: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and
Secretary. Students must complete all parts of the election application packet, complete all pre-election
activities, and be approved by ASB and school representatives before running a campaign for elected office.
In order to qualify to run for ASB office, you will be required to submit and meet the requirements contained in
this application, be a registered Kennedy student for the year of 2016 - 2017, deliver a speech satisfactory to
ASB representatives and complete an interview where you are able to speak to your leadership abilities. Note:
In order to run for an ASB position, you must be a part of ASB/Leadership for at least one year. As an
officer for Class or ASB you also must be a part of the third block class all year long, except if you are an
AVID or academy student. Upon completion of pre-election activities and being given approval from the
school, you will be given permission to run for an elected office.

IV.
Teacher Recommendation Worksheets (Included)
Every candidate for office must obtain two faculty recommendations using the attached Teacher
Recommendation Worksheet. Candidates must take the recommendation form to two teachers and provide
those teachers with envelopes. The teachers should complete the recommendations and then seal them in the
given envelopes before returning them to the candidate. The candidate should submit all two of the sealed
Teacher Recommendation Worksheets with this election packet by the due date.
V.
Resume
Each candidate is required to submit a resume as a brief written account of personal, educational,
and work-related qualifications and experience. The resume should be one-page in length. Though there
is no specific format for the appearance of the resume, each candidate is strongly encouraged to review
traditional resume formatting and submit something that would be acceptable in a professional environment.
Students who do not complete an adequate resume will be disqualified from running for office. The resume
should be submitted as part of the election packet.
VI.
Campaign Speech
Candidates are required to successfully deliver a speech as part of gaining approval from ASB to run
for elected office. Each candidate will deliver a speech to a panel made up of existing ASB members.
The ASB members will rate the speech according to the following criteria:

How much knowledge does the candidate possess regarding the duties of the ASB position?
What experiences does the candidate discuss that relate to the role of the ASB position?
In what ways does the candidate show that he or she will be a worthy member of ASB?
What specific skill does the candidate have that will be useful to the ASB organization?
Why does the candidate want to be a member of ASB?
How will the candidate manage time to meet the demands of ASB?
What kinds of activities has the candidate been involved in that show a history of school pride,
community service and a high level of personal expectation?

10. How well does the candidate show through presentation and preparation that he or she is the best
candidate for the position?
Candidates should keep in mind the following criterion when preparing their speeches:
1. Speeches should be no shorter than three minutes and no longer than four minutes.
2. The candidate will deliver the speech without the assistance of anyone, though he or she may use preapproved props.
3. The contents of speeches must be appropriate and consistent with campaign rules and guidelines.
4. The contents of speeches must be scripted and submitted with the election packet.

5. Candidates who do not adequately complete the speech or whose speech is disqualified as judged by a
panel of existing ASB members and the activities director will not be allowed to run for office.
VI. Interview
Each candidate for office must successfully complete an interview with a panel of ASB members in order
to be given permission to run for office. The interview will be conducted after the speech and will give ASB
an opportunity to ask the candidate questions related to his or her qualifications for ASB office. The interview
will last approximately five minutes. ASB members will judge the candidate's answers to questions according to
a scoring rubric to find candidates who meet the requirements for running for office.
Below is a list of the types of questions that could be asked of a candidate in an interview:
1. What other time commitments do you have other than ASB for next year?
2. How will you manage your time so that you can make sure you are meeting your responsibilities in all areas
of your life?
3. What are five adjectives that describe you?
4. What ideas do you have for ASB for next year that relate to your job?
5. Who do you see as being the most important aspect of your job on ASB?
6. Define ASB.
7. Why is ASB important?
8. What things have you done outside of ASB that show you are qualified for this position?
9. How can ASB specifically have a positive impact on the school culture?
10. How would you resolve a conflict with another ASB student when you are working with that person to plan
an event?
Please note that these are not necessarily the questions that will be asked at the interview, but they are example
questions being given so that candidates can have an idea of how to prepare for the interview. Candidates
should come to deliver their speech and complete the interview process dressed professionally and carry
themselves in a mature manner.
If all aspects of the pre-campaign process are completed satisfactorily, candidates will be granted the
ability to run for elected office.

ASB Code of Conduct
I, ______________________________________, solemnly swear that I will abide by the following Code of
Conduct set forth by the John F. Kennedy High School ASB Cabinet and Constitution. The following standards
of eligibility, conduct, and responsibilities shall apply to all members during their term of office.
I.
Academic Achievement
A. I will maintain an unweighted academic 3.0 grade point average computed on a 4.0 scale with no
deficient or failing grades (no Ds or Fs).
B. If I receive less than a 3.0 GPA or receive a failing or deficient grade, I understand that I will be
dismissed from office by the administration of John F. Kennedy High School.
C. I understand I may be asked to submit a record of my scholastic achievements to the activities
director every two weeks.
II.
Behavioral Standards
A. As a member of ASB, I realize that my conduct must be beyond reproach at all times, on and off
campus.
B. I will uphold the constitution and my oath of office.
C. I will cooperate with and support the ASB president and activities director.
D. I will abide by school dress regulations at all times. I will never violate dress code.
E. I will not carry nor use illegal chemical substances or stimulants, drugs, alcohol, etc… at any
time, on and off campus.
F. I will display good sportsmanship at all times and serve as an ambassador for John F. Kennedy
High School at other schools.
G. I will maintain a satisfactory citizenship record and will not be beyond step two factor of a
behavior contract with my assistant principal.
H. I understand if I am suspended from John F. Kennedy High School, I may be suspended from
ASB temporarily or permanently, as determined by the John F. Kennedy High School
administrative team.
I. Failure to comply with any of these rules may result in immediate removal from office as
determined by the John F. Kennedy High School administrative team.
III.
Responsibility of Office
A. I understand that attendance to class is mandatory.
