The Leadership course uses various curricula drawn from and aligned with the Goals and Objectives as
outlined by the AWSP Washington Student Leadership Program in the areas of Communication Skills, Group
Processes, Managerial Skills, Self Awareness and Human Relations Skills. The members of this class plan,
organize and implement activities for the student body; such as, assemblies, fundraisers and spirit days.
Class Expectatiosn:
Students enrolled in this course are student leaders throughout the school day and during school-sponsored
activities and events. Given the visibility of this class, leadership students are expected to set a positive
example in all that they do. It is expected that leadership students follow all school guidelines and exhibit
appropriate behavior including respect for themselves, fellow classmates, faculty/staff and the school.
Leadership students should think often of how their actions can make Highline a more welcoming
environment in which students can learn and grow.
Students must sign and return the Student Leadership Code of Conduct on the last page to participate in this
course. Students who are reported in violation of the Code of Conduct or exhibiting inappropriate behavior at
school or school sponsored-activities/events will be dealt with on an individual level and could result in
removal from this class as well as disciplinary action.
Attendance:
Because this class requires high levels of participation, attendance is very important. If students are not in
class, they cannot participate. In addition:
1. All Leadership students are expected to attend and assist at our major events. The group in charge has
the primary responsibility but everyone else is expected to be there and provide help as needed.
2. All students are expected to help with setup and cleanup.
3. If you cannot attend an event, please give the adviser a note in advance with your name on it
explaining why you are unable to attend.
Coursework/Assessment/Grading:
Homework:
Traditional homework will not be assigned on a regular basis in class. As part of the Leadership course,
students will be required to attend on-campus lunch Wednesdays, and some afternoon/evening activities.
Students are responsible for being aware of responsibilities they have signed up for or been assigned.
Late-Work:
Because this course is responsible for the activities that happen at school, students must be responsible for
getting all plans, projects and work in on time.
Grading:
Grades will be determined through accumulated points by weighted categories:
Quarterly job: 30%
Weekly Outreaches: 10 %
Leadership Portfolio: 30%
Curriculum/Classwork: 20%
ASB Evaluation based on project work: 10%
Grades will be based on the following:
1. Leadership Portfolio – all students must submit a portfolio which demonstrates the work they have
done over the course of the semester. The Portfolio will be turned in at least two times per semester
(generally at the grading terms).
2. ASB evaluation: This percentage is made up of participation points on a daily basis and an evaluation
by your ASB officer each quarter based on how well you work with your group and how well you
complete your given tasks as a group member.
3. Curriculum/Classwork: We will explore various aspects of leadership and you may be assigned work
associated with the learning. The ultimate goal is that each of you will see yourselves as leaders and
will build on these characteristics not only as a member of the leadership class but as a member of
your community. This will include a weekly log where you document your use of classtime.
4. Weekly Outreaches: written communication once a week to a different student, staff or community
member expressing thanks for support or providing thoughtful encouragement for an upcoming
challenge or event. (you may not repeat to whom you send the communication.) You must turn in a
copy and the original note each week for full credit.
5. Quarterly Job: all students will create a job description based on jobs which are available each
quarter. Students will submit evidence of the job being completed as well as a reflection at the end of
each quarter. There will be designated class time to work on this job each week.
