Name: ____________________________________________________________ Hour: ___________ Writing Leveled Questions Instructions: Leveled Questions are an easy way to check your understanding of a story. We will write leveled questions as a class using “Raymond’s Run”. Then you will write leveled questions for the books you read for summer reading. First, write a summary about “Raymond’s Run”. What was it all about? _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Now as a group, write three leveled questions you might see on a test over “Raymond’s Run”. Level One: You know it’s a level one question if you can literally put your finger on the answer in the text. Example: Who won first place? _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Level Two: These questions are inference-based. You have to read between the lines to figure out the answer. You can put your finger on the evidence that supports your answer. Example: Do Gretchen and Squeaky become friends after the race is over? _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Level Three: You don’t have to read the piece to answer Level Three questions, but it helps. These questions are based on personal experience or opinion. They are abstract – meaning you can’t put your finger on the evidence. These are thought-provoking and often lead to a discussion, too. Example: Is being the best the most important thing? _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Name: ____________________________________________________________ Hour: ___________ Lastly, think again and look back over your leveled questions. What was the story all about? _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Now, on your own you will write leveled questions for each book you read for summer reading. This will prove to me you did read over the summer (or are currently reading). Your question(s) could be the one everybody answers on the summer reading exam. It may be helpful to briefly review the plot of each book to help you recall what the story was about before you begin writing questions. The fiction book I read for summer reading: ________________________________________________ Level One: ____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Level Two: ____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Level Three: __________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ The nonfiction book I read for summer reading: _____________________________________________ Level One: ____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Level Two: ____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Level Three: __________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ This is due tomorrow if not completed in class.
