UNIT 27: TECHNICAL & TACTICAL SKILLS IN SPORT UNIT INTRODUCTION • To assess the technical and tactical skills of yourselves and others, and plan your own development. • Look at the technical skills and tactics required in selected sports. • Look at professional sports performers and their abilities in the areas their sports demand. • Examine your own abilities in competitive situations over a period of time. • Look at your development, technically and tactically. ASSIGNMENTS • Assignment 1: Produce a poster explaining the technical and tactical demands of three different sports. • Assignment 2: Create an observation checklist and observe the performance of an elite sports performer, describing their strengths and areas for improvement. • Assignment 3: Create an observation checklist and observe your own performance, creating a personal development plan for yourself. TECHNIQUES OF SPORT Unit 27: Technical & Tactical Skills in Sport LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson you must be able to; 1. Describe the difference between a technique & a skill and provide examples. 2. Describe what is a fine skill and what is a gross skill. 3. Categorise fine and gross skills and some will provide justifications. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TECHNIQUE & SKILL? What do you think is the difference between a technique and a skill? Write down your definition DEFINITION OF A TECHNIQUE & A SKILL TECHNIQUE – Techniques are the basic movements of any sport or event e.g. a block start in a 100 metre race is a technique. We combine a number of techniques into a pattern of movement e.g. triple jump - running and then the hop, step and jump phases. SKILL – Skill is an athlete's ability to choose and perform the right techniques at the right time, successfully, regularly and with a minimum of effort. ACTIVITY - SKILLS In Sport 1: Write down all the skills listed for Football In Sport 2: Write down all the skills listed for Tennis In Sport 3: Write down all the skills listed for Cricket HOW MANY SKILLS DID YOU THINK OF? Football Tennis Cricket Passing (Inside/Outside/Laces/Heel) Forehand Front foot drive Dribbling (all parts of feet) Backhand Back foot drive Shooting (Inside/Outside/Laces) Lob Pull/Hook Volley Smash Cut Header Serve Sweep Catch Drop Catch Dive Return Fast Bowl 1v1 Moves (Scissor/Ronaldo Chop) Slice Spin Bowl Control (Thigh/Chest/Feet) Half Volley Dive Cross Volley Stump Punch/parry Topspin Paddle Sweep Running with the Ball Dive Advancing down the Wicket FINE AND GROSS MOTOR SKILLS Motor skills are all about the movement of the body. There are two different types of motor skills: Gross motor skills are major bodily movements, normally associated with: Strength Endurance Power Sporting examples are; jumping to catch a ball, running up as a fast bowler. Fine motor skills require small muscular movements. They include small, precise movements that take a lot of time to learn, practice and refine. Sporting examples are; Spin Bowling, Snooker, Darts. FINE AND GROSS MOTOR SKILLS CONTINUED Usually sport specific skills are not define as just gross or just fine. We must place them on a scale to see how much the skill is fine or gross. E.G.…A goalkeeper coming to collect a cross from the air… Fine…………………………..……X……….Gross WHERE WOULD YOU PLACE THESE MOTOR SKILLS ON THE SCALE? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DV-iyGkmyQs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KkCX58wBS8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWRZ-_VRgsI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM2noQkZMPo ACTIVITY 2 – FINE TO GROSS CONTINUUM Now you must use your own chart to state where you think 3 skills would fall on this continuum for each of the THREE SPORTS! FINE……………………………..GROSS PLACE THE SKILLS ON YOUR CONTINUUM Football Tennis Cricket Passing (Inside/Outside/Laces/Heel) Forehand Front foot drive Dribbling (all parts of feet) Backhand Back foot drive Shooting (Inside/Outside/Laces) Lob Pull/Hook Volley Smash Cut Header Serve Sweep Catch Drop Catch Dive Return Fast Bowl 1v1 Moves (Scissor/Ronaldo Chop) Slice Spin Bowl Control (Thigh/Chest/Feet) Half Volley Dive Cross Volley Stump Punch/parry Topspin Paddle Sweep Running with the Ball Dive Advancing down the Wicket SKILL CONTINUUM Unit 27: Technical & Tactical Skills in Sport LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson you must be able to; 1. Describe what is a continuous skill and provide examples. 2. Describe what is a discrete skill and provide examples. 3. Describe what is a serial skill and provide examples. 4. Be able to breakdown a skill. CONTINUOUS, DISCRETE AND SERIAL SKILL Continuous Skill: An action that is repeated over and over such as running, swimming, cycling. Discrete Skill: The opposite of continuous skills. They have a clear beginning and end like a serve in tennis. The skill is repeated once complete. Discrete skills are broken down into 3 phases like this… Preparation – Include the ball toss, the back swing, looking at the ball. Execution – The action of hitting the ball – swing the racket forward, straightening of the arm in a throwing action, etc Recovery – The follow through of the hitting arm, as it bends in front of the body, the position of landing, etc. Serial Skill: A group of discrete skills strung together to make a new and complex movement. i.e. the sequence of skills for the triple jump. Which is this? ACTIVITY - VIDEO Write down the techniques you witness within the video. You will then be given a quiz to assess how much information you have gathered. Describe why we analyse performance 2. Produce a performance profile for tennis 3. Produce a performance profile for football OBSERVATIONAL ANALYSIS The perfect model is a mental image of the correct technique. Sometimes a video or photographic image can be used to compare with a live performance. However, good coaches will know what they are looking for whenever they observe a sportsperson perform and will be able to describe the perfect model when giving feedback. Whenever you analyse a performance you should look for strengths and weaknesses. Once you are ready to provide feedback be sure to talk about the good things you have seen before correcting any weaknesses. Beginners only need small amounts of feedback at key times. All performers should be given time to consider their own feelings about the performance rather than being told what they should think. Feedback should always motivate the performer as well as correct the technique.
