How to Make a
Professional Impression
O Dress for the position you want
O Amp up your Resume
O Improve LinkedIn and social networking pages
O Read the newspaper weekly to stay up to date
O Invest in your own business cards – they’re like
mini resumes!
Dress to Impress
O Why?
O You must look as professional as
you say you are – appearance is
just as important as education and
experience
O Let’s See a Demo!
O What do you think of each model’s outfit?
O What would you do the same or differently?
Have your Resume Ready for Action
O Make sure your name pops and that you have an
organized format
O Use buzz/key words
O Quantify your information – use
numbers to show value whenever possible
O Avoid too much white space
O Adding interests at the bottom of the page can
spark a conversation or a connection
Cover Letters: Something to Think About
O Some companies require this – have a copy ready
O Showcase your writing abilities
O Taylor each cover letter to the specific company and
position
O Express your true interest in the company and how
your skills align with the position
O Have different variations of your cover letter
available for different positions and types of
companies ready to go
Stay Up-To-Date: Current Events
O It is important to know about what is going on in
the world!
O We are here to help you stay informed
O Make a habit of reading the newspaper
O Read other publications that are specific to the
industry you wish to pursue
O Use the internet and apps to obtain information
World News
O President Obama speaks at United Nations
General Assembly today
O Kenya President declares victory over
terrorists in Mall Massacre
O Bank of America heads to trial for U.S mortgage fraud
charges
~“The trial is also a reminder of the billions of dollars in legal
liabilities Bank of America has incurred as a result of its 2008
acquisition of Countrywide Financial Corp, which became a
poster child of the mortgage meltdown.”(Reuters)
Rutgers News
O Showcase Story:
School of Engineering sophomore Thomas Piccirello is offering a
more affordable alternative for iPhone repairs.
Last January, Piccirello started Rutgers Repair, a service catered
specifically to fixing iPhones for Rutgers students.
“The cost of repair for the iPhone 4 or 4s is $65, [for] the iPhone 5 it
is a bit more,” he said. “Compared to Apple, there’s no question [that it
is a good price]. They’re charging upwards of $150.”
In a word of advice to aspiring entrepreneurs on campus, Piccirello
said word of mouth is often more effective than traditional advertising,
especially at Rutgers.
