Moreover, Marcia has explored how cutting edge technologies—Web 2.0, studio-based, and mobile learning—demand exemplars of quality practice to pass on the vision and ideals of distributed learning. This research fuels a passion she has for improving and elevating the quality and status of online education and its designers. Projects in the development stage involve an international study exploring the effective use of a peer assessment instructional model for deeper discussions and learning. Leadership positions in systems development, curriculum, and instruction for businesses and non-profits provide foundation and add depth to her research goals—particularly for online higher academics. Always on the cutting edge of technology, she has built and managed LANs (local area networks); was involved in communications and security protocols provisioning; was responsible for scaling up numerous systems; and, trained staff on integrated information systems. Dr. Ashbaugh has owned four small businesses in the past 30 years: (1) a construction accounting and tax preparation service (specialized in manual to computer systems conversions), (2) a consultancy and training firm for church and church school accounting/membership/student support software, and (3) a real estate and property investment company, and (4) more recently, a principal consultant and researcher for MLA Instructional Designers, an instructional design and research consultancy. INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN/COURSE DEVELOPMENT WORK Introductory office productivity software course. An international online university (University of the People) required a course to instruct in various programs for office functions utilizing only open source resources and embedded web links. Marcia’s design efforts provided instruction in concepts and functionality through innovative learning connections and distributed options. Additionally, she is currently helping to reassess an online peer assessment learning model for improvement through redesign. First Year Integration (FYI) hybrid course for undergraduate orientation and matriculation. This was a foundational course for freshman entering the university life which served to introduce skills for success on campus as well as in the online environment. Using the e-College course management system, Marcia was able to express a passion for mentoring students in the engaging learner-centered, cutting edge design. Numerous multi-media creations including instructional videos, SecondLife for teaching history, and interactive and engaging slideshows. Each instructional requirement was met with creativity and relevance for appropriate application to the situation. Web 2.0 technologies were integrated with traditional strategies and learning management systems for engaging and effective outcomes. Inmate online education program design for locked down prisons. With cooperation from prison libraries and specialized internet securities teams, Marcia’s tertiary education program design ensured prisoners could find new opportunities for education, with potential for reduced recidivism. Employee performance support system for a University of Colorado neuroscience lab. Scientists and support staff were offered resolution to purchasing bottle-neck with the design of an innovative just-in-need system with in-context displays and descriptions of complex instruments and supplies. High school meth awareness course. Through a series of choices offered in an interactive Powerpoint presentation/simulation, students would learn the consequences of an accumulation of choices that lead to either successful or poor outcomes. Reflection and critical-thinking were encouraged. High school introduction to computing. A basic course was designed to instruct 21st century high school students in the basics of computing adding depth to the functional use of application features. The on-ground class was enhanced by media-rich authentic task assignments. Marcia was also privileged to pilot this course on-ground.
