DIVISION/COMMITTEE REPORT Name of Division or Committee: Design & Development Division Summer Report __X_ Date Submitted: June 21, 2015 Name and title of person submitting report: Anne Mendenhall, D&D Division President Email: anne.mendenhall@gmail.com Phone number: 808-292-0476 Responses to the following items need to be entered on this form and sent as a .doc email attachment to the AECT President and Executive Director. The Summer Report will be due one month prior to Summer Leadership meeting (DUE: June 20, 2015, will allow until July 1, 2015 for this year) and the Fall Report is due one month prior to the annual convention (DUE: October 3, 2015) Mission The mission of AECT is to provide international leadership by promoting scholarship and best practices in the creation, use, and management of technologies for effective teaching and learning. Vision We seek to be the premier international organization in educational technology; the organization to which others refer for research and best practices. Outcomes 1. AECT is internationally recognized and valued by policy makers and stakeholders as experts in improvement in teaching and learning. 2. AECT members are actively engaged professionals and leaders in the field and within the organization. 3. AECT is dynamic, sustainable, and responsive to change as an organization. Identify Division outcomes/Committee charge(s) being addressed and the timeline for implementation. Please relate your outcomes to the three main AECT outcomes listed above (or to strategies in the current strategic plan): The mission of the Design & Development Division includes: 1. Facilitating conversation among the Division’s members, 2. Instigating, encouraging, and disseminating progress in design and development concepts and practices through both empirically-based scholarly work and practitionerbased design and development process and products, 3. Contributing to the further development of standards and best practices for Design & Development for the field and for academic programs, 4. Providing guidance in leadership, equity and ethical practices, 5. Assisting in preparation of and continued professional development for practitioners and researchers In order to address AECT’s goals, the Design and Development Division has undertaken the following initiatives: Communications initiative including surveying membership on their preferred communication methods and types of information they would like to receive. Invited Design & Development Division Panel Sessions on Special Topics to be presented at the AECT International Convention in Indianapolis, IN. Topics include a panel on civicminded instruction. Instructional Design and Technology Professor’s Forum focusing on instructional design and data usage ethics. Design & Development Showcase bridging theory and practice of Instructional Design. D&D PacifiCorp Competition showcasing the Instructional Design skills of graduate students. Webinar Series in partnership with GSA focusing on educational leadership and young professionals. Leadership initiative ”D&D Board Associate Program” for the recognition for additional leadership development opportunities within the D&D Division. Research repository initiative to provide members easy access to articles and projects written and developed by D&D members. Describe your progress in meeting your outcomes in terms of specific actions you have taken or are taking We formed a newsletter committee to ideate and create a new way of communicating to our members. Through this committee it was determined that a survey to the membership would be the best approach to inform our communication strategy. Survey data has been collected an analyzed and the committee will reconvene to determine a communication strategy. After having difficulty getting members to be nominated and commit to a 4-year presidential leadership track we formed a committee to review other divisions leadership tracks and recommend alternatives. The D&D Board unanimously voted for a 3-year presidential track with an independent 2 year VP of Communications position. This recommendation will be presented to the AECT Board. Board Associate Leadership program. Each year the D&D leadership select two Board Associates that shadow the leadership and work on special projects. This year the board associates are working on the newsletter and communication committee and will help with the research and practice repository. The D&D Research & Practice Repository focusing on publications and projects of D&D members is still in the progress. In partnership with the Graduate Student Assembly we have offered webinars that address D&D issues including writing effective conference proposals and reviewing proposals. o Deri Draper & Anne Mendenhall: Writing Effective Proposals for AECT/D&D Division o Drew Davidson: “Creative Chaos: Teaching Project Teams to be Innovative, or Making the Magic” o PacifiCorp Webinar Continuous update of our division website. For example, past D&D showcase examples have been added for reference. We sponsor and administer the annual Pacificorp instructional design competition. Our sponsorship of the D&D Showcase and the IDT Professors’ Forum at the AECT annual conference complement our GSA and Pacificorp partnerships to address this element of our mission. Describe special activities the Division/Committee has undertaken or is planning and talk about how they address the three AECT outcomes (or strategies in the current strategic plan): We do not expect major changes in our approach. As noted above, we continue our traditional activities and expand them to new groups and partnerships. The new initiatives will be further developed and documented. What is needed from AECT to support Division/Committee plans? Continued financial and logistical support, especially in welcoming and training new leaders and in enhanced communications through the web site and via social media. Outreach to international members: In expanding the international mission, D&D suggests an AECT workshop/symposium in Europe and Australia. Dirk Ifenthaler would be available to pursue such a project as he has experience on both continents. A direct communication between AECT Board and D&D Division Board. One suggestion may be the inclusion of the division president to the AECT board. Fall Report: What revenue or expenses have been incurred by the Division/Committee? See below, current division year-to-date budget figures. Fall Report: Identify any changes to the Fall 2014 Report and how they may have affected the Division/Committee. No changes to the D&D Division Fall 2014 Report. Fall Report: Attach the current division year-to-date budget figures. No expenses so far. Additional comments: As noted in a previous report, we request a one-time additional budget for the 2015 AECT Summer Leadership Conference of $1700 in order to support our international division leadership to take part at the meeting.
