40s: Circuits 40s Circuits Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Waterloo WATERLOO ELECTRICAL AND WATERLOO COMPUTER ENGINEERING ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING 1 40s: Circuits Outline Overview Courses available WATERLOO ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING 2 40s: Circuits Overview Both courses include an introduction to the use of computer-aided design for modelling, simulating, and designing the circuits discussed in class: – ECE 445 Integrated Digital Electronics includes CMOS device modelling, logic styles for power and performance, flip-flops, arithmetic circuits, clocking and timing considerations – ECE 444 Integrated Analog Electronics includes amplifier frequency response, feedback and compensation, biasing techniques and selected topic such as A/D converters and PLLs WATERLOO ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING 3 40s: Circuits Course Summary 4A ECE 445 Integrated Digital Electronics 4B ECE 444 Integrated Analog Electronics WATERLOO ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING 4 40s: Circuits Which Courses to Take? 4A: ECE 445 Integrated Digital Electronics Review of the MOS transistor: Static and dynamic behavior, short channel effects, scaling trends, SPICE models. CMOS inverter; combinational CMOS circuit design - logic styles for low power, high performance circuits; sequential CMOS circuit design - flip-flops, pipelines, Schmitt trigger; CMOS arithmetic circuits; interconnect parasitic; clocking & timing considerations in digital VLSIs. 4B: ECE 444 Integrated Analog Electronics Analog electronics exploits the physical behaviour of electronic devices to create electronic systems. The performance of single and multiple transistor amplifying stages are studied. Followed by a study of biasing, current mirror and output stages, which are then combined in the study of operational amplifier circuits. Frequency response and feedback are then reviewed leading to a detailed study of stability and compensation for multistage and operational amplifiers. The course finishes with a look at selected topics from A/D converters, oscillators and phase-locked loops. WATERLOO ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING 5 40s: Circuits Pre-Enrolment Remember that you must pre-enrol in – October for 4A courses – June for 4B courses Courses with fewer than 20 students will be cancelled!
