The respiratory system brings oxygen into the body to the lungs, then it gets
rid of waste that is carbon dioxide and water vapor. We inhale O2 and we
exhale CO2 and water vapor.

The diaphragm is a muscle that contracts and moves down to make the
chest cavity bigger so air will go into the lungs (inhalation).
The diaphragm relaxes or moves up making the chest cavity smaller so air
will be forced out of the lungs.(exhalation)
We learned this by seeing the “bottle lung” function and watching the video.
4) What is the function of the alveoli, and where are they located? Explain using evidence.
The alveoli are air sacs in the lungs at the end of the bronchioles. This is
where the oxygen and carbon dioxide switch places. We saw pictures of the
alveoli and a video that showed the air exchanging.

We inhale oxygen. We exhale carbon dioxide and water vapor. We saw the
water vapor on the mirror when we exhaled. We saw different gasses going
in and out of the body on the computer video.
6) What are cilia? How do they help your respiratory system?
Cilia are little hairs in the nose and trachea that filter out germs and dust
particles so they do not reach the lungs.
7) What is the function of the nose? Is it better to breathe through your nose or mouth? Explain.
The nose filters, warms, and moistens the air as it enters the body.
It is better to breathe through your nose so you filter and warms the air.
It is better to breathe through your mouth if you are stuffy or exercising
because you take in more air through your mouth.
8) What is the function of the trachea and why is it lined with cartilage?
The trachea is the wind pipe it brings oxygen to the lungs and takes carbon
dioxide out to the nose or mouth. It is lined with cartilage to protect it and
give is supportive structure.
9) How does smoking affect your lungs?
Smoking will turn the alveoli in your lungs black with dust and tar.
It will also make your alveoli smaller so you will not exchange as much
oxygen and carbon dioxide.
10) What is the function of the epiglottis? Use evidence to explain.
The epiglottis is a flap of skin that covers the trachea when we swallow food
or water so it gets diverted to the esophagus.
We saw this in the swallow video and we have choked or coughed when
water or food goes down the wrong way.
