IT'S FINALLY FALL!
By Lila Patel (3rd Grade, Mrs. Nissi)
It's finally fall! Sometimes when I go outside I hear the
leaves crunching under my feet. I also see the crunchy
leaves falling off trees. I can feel some of the frost
from last night. I also go apple picking. I usually pick
big apples. I taste the yummy apples from apple picking.
I go trick-or-treating on Halloween. And when I go trickor-treating I usually get queen-size bars. I like to smell
the yummy candy from Halloween. Sometimes I go to the lake
down the road and throw rocks in the lake and skim them.
Fall is an amazing season!
Fall Fun
By Noah Eggers (3rd Grade, Mrs. Nissi)
Fall is my second favorite season of the year. I like
jumping in the leaves, going apple picking and pumpkin
picking. The past months I've been smelling pumpkin pie
and the apples with the creamy caramel on top. The past
days I've been feeling great about fall because
Thanksgiving is in the fall.
On Thanksgiving my family
always has a football game, and it is really fun to play
with my cousins. The taste of fall is awesome because my
family bakes a lot of pumpkin pies. It feels cold when
it's fall. You start to have to wear a coat because it
gets really cold. When it's Halloween I can hear the
people screaming because of the feeling of scariness. When
my dad and mom rake the leaves I jump in them, and it's
really fun. In the fall when I feel the leaves, they feel
smooth and cold. Fall is a wonderful season.
Fall Fun
By Sam Clifford (3rd Grade, Mrs. Nissi)
Fall is really fun. There are lots of things to do in the
fall. I cook delicious pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, and
pumpkin muffins with my mom. When we have those things for
dessert, I feel like we are having a feast. Sometimes I go
for a walk with my friends and look for animals that come
out in the fall. I can smell the mums outside. I like to
go to a Broadway Stage and watch a fall play. Mom and I go
to a Halloween store and get lots of scary features for our
front yard. I like to put my hands into a mystery box of
eyeballs that are really grapes when I go trick-ortreating. I run around outside through the leaves. I like
to rake a lot of leaves, make leaf piles, jump in them and
hear them crunch. It's fun to go to the Bog Hollow Farm's
Family Fun Day and go in their pumpkin patch. Then, you
can take a pumpkin home and carve it. I also like to go to
the park and play on the structures in the fall.
Everything in the fall is really awesome.
Fall Fun
By Conor Bohan (3rd Grade, Mrs. Nissi)
In fall, there is so much to do. I smell applesauce in my
kitchen. I hear the wind blowing and Halloween decorations
making scary sounds. I feel the rugged red leaves from the
trees. I taste the sweetness of candy corn and pumpkin
pie. I like to play on D.F.C. Dragons soccer club. I like
to play with my best friend T.J. Pikul and my little
brother, Gavin. I see the falling leaves. I like to help
my dad rake leaves, then I jump in the leaves and throw
them in the air. Fall is my most favorite season.
Fall Fun
By Hunter Schultz (3rd Grade, Mrs. Nissi)
Fall is fantastic. I hear birds chirping when I wake up in
the morning. I love fall because I love to watch football
games, especially the Pats. Then my dad and I play in the
yard. I love to fell the football. It is rough. I love
to rake leaves with my dad. I like to jump into the
crunchy leaves. I like to go inside after playing in cold
weather and play video games. I really like dressing up on
Halloween and going to parties. I love eating pumpkin pie
and candy. Fall is the best season.
Fall Fun
By Ali Brown (3rd Grade, Mrs. Nissi)
Fall is just warming up, but I don't care. I love the
sights and smells of fall, there are things to touch, taste
and hear. I like the bright autumn colors. I fell all the
leaves crunching under my feet. In fall, I hear a warm
crackling fire in the fireplace. It's great to smell the
yummy turkey roasting. I love turkey! I love to taste
yummy applesauce. But my all time favorite to do in the
fall is to make applesauce with my dad. Fall is a
wonderful season.
The Magic Bus
By Shannon McGinty (5th Grade, Mrs. Fuchs)
Tara Fiona Greenwich was just entering her first year
of second grade. She was very small, but was very friendly
and had lots of friends. She was so excited for second
grade in Hamburger Elementary School because she was
finally one of the older kids in her school. But here she
was, waiting at the bus stop, and all she felt were nerves.
She looked at the watch her mother gave her, and saw that
the bus was 5 minutes late. She didn't want to be late for
the first day of school! Suddenly, a bus that obviously
wasn't the school bus pulled up and the driver told her,
"I'm here your majesty. Hop in." Only being in second
grade, Tara got on the bus. The bus, unlike her old school
bus, was like a limo! Tara's mouth hung open in awe. The
bus driver suddenly broke the silence. "You might want to
buckle your seat belt," he said. Tara did as she was told.
Then just as suddenly as it appeared, the bus blasted into
the air. Tara was so busy hanging on for dear life that
she didn't notice that the bus driver had exited the bus
and climbed onto the roof! Then, two wings sprouted from
the top of the bus. The bus driver climbed back into the
bus and said, "We're here, your majesty." Tara was puzzled
and annoyed. "What? We're where? Why are you calling me
your majesty? Who are you? What do you want from me-,"
and then suddenly her train of thought was interrupted for
what was right in front of the bus was a giant sign that
said, "Welcome to Greenwich Ville."
Tara tried to speak but all that came out was a highpitched squeak. The bus driver looked at her with concern.
"Are you alright your majesty?" he asked. Tara finally
managed to speak. "This isn't real," she whispered. "What
do you mean?" he asked in a puzzled tone. "What do I
mean?" she asked her voice rising with anger. "What do you
mean? You picked me up on a mysterious bus, I don't know
who you are, and I'm in a place that doesn't exist!" she
shouted. "But Greenwich Ville does exist, your majesty.
I-," he tried to continue, but Tara wasn't finished. "Stop
calling me that!" she screamed. "I am not a queen!"
"Princess," the driver corrected. "Whatever!" Tara yelled.
Then she sat down and began to cry. "I want to go home,"
she said, her voice muffled with tears. "There, there your
ma- I mean Tara. The palace is right near town and I can
bring you to it so you can see your parents, okay?" Tara
looked up and sniffed. "Alright, let's go. Oh, and what's
your name?" He smiled. "Call me George," and they walked
off the bus onto the busy streets of Greenwich Ville.
When they arrived at the palace, George led Tara to
her room where many maids were rushing around dusting
things. While George asked the maids to leave, Tara
sneaked a glance at their faces. They all looked
unfamiliar except for one. Then, when she looked up, Tara
finally realized whom she was. It was her best friend
Jenny! Except this Jenny had dirt all over her and looked,
well, serious. Tara asked George about Jenny and he said
that that was their lead maid, Jennifer. But Jenny always
hated being called Jennifer, and lead maid? This is not
right.
Next, George and Tara visited the kitchen. All the
chefs were at work and they all seemed to be in perfect
time with one another. One goes here, another goes there,
so nobody bumps into one another. At least until Tara got
in the way. A chef bumped into her and dropped the food he
was carrying. "I'm so sorry!", Tara exclaimed. Then she
realized she was looking right at her friend Joe. Except
this Joe looked tired and miserable. Tara backed away.
"I'm sorry, I can't take this!" she yelled and ran as fast
as she could out of the palace and towards the bus. There
was a noise in the distance. A beeping of some kind. Then
the beeping got louder. "Tara wake up!" her mom yelled.
"You have to get up if you want to make the bus on the
first day!"
"Actually, can you drive me?" Tara said.
didn't want to take the bus.

My Dog, Bro (aka Brother Zeus Fahey)
By Maeve Fahey (5th Grade, Mrs. Fuchs)
Some people love cats, but my favorite animal is a
dog. I love my dog Bro! He is covered in thick black fur
and has big loveable brown eyes. Since Bro is a Labrador
Retriever or water dog, he has webbed feet to help him
swim. The first time he came in contact with the water,
this "water dog" was terrified. We brought him to my
aunt's pool when he was just a few months old. He sniffed
the water and shivered a bit. Bro sat on the steps and
refused to go any closer to the water. Finally, he fell
into the water and started swimming. He was a natural. He
swam every stroke with grace and most importantly,
strength.
When Bro got tired, he climbed out of the water
and shook like a building in an earthquake.
family was soaked.
Our entire
My adorable little puppy loves to give and get
affection. He sometimes rubs up against people like a cat
would. He sometimes barks loud enough to wake up the
entire city of Boston just to get a pat on the head or a
scratch behind the ears. One time Bro stood in front of me
and howled. I tried to take him out in the yard, give him
water and feed him, but all he wanted was a hug
Bro loves the car. He loves everything about the
experience of riding in the car. He loves to paw at the
seats, watch the cars pass by, but most of all Bro loves to
"surf". Surfing is what my family refers to as Bro hanging
his head out the window, ears flying in the wind, tongue
hanging out of his mouth, pure joy! We call it surfing
because he looks like he is about to catch the next big
wave or the next car that passes by.
Bro's caring personality, his fun-loving nature, and
his affectionate manner make him the perfect pet and my
favorite brother – Brother Zeus Fahey.

Yay I’m in!
So much to do but then a

I heard a bang, a thundering crash, then the
Epcot ball, it smashed.
It started to roll;
I started to run, this year,
Epcot was not that fun
It rolled right over me, now I’m flattened, I
can’t believe that really happened.

Then all of the others turned Ollie to mush
It’s a true story, you must believe that
From that day on, Ollie was FLAT.

It is hard for me to pick one hero. That is why I am picking two heroes, my
Mom and Dad. My Mom is my hero because she takes care of me day after day.
Always telling me or showing me ways to do things better. It may be homework
or kindness to others. She wants me to always be the best person I can be at all
times.
My Dad teaches a lot about sports. He says it’s not all about winning but if
you play your best everything will fall into place. He teaches me it’s a team and it
takes more than one person to win a game or lose a game. He is also a hard
worker and a good provider for our family. My two heroes are the best!

Skiing
I love to ski. It’s my favorite sport by far. My favorite type of skiing is ski
racing.
I am on Prospect Hill Ski Team, based out of Blue Hills in Canton. Every Sunday
we travel to either Nashoba Valley, Bradford, Bagostow or Blue Hills. We ski two
events: giant slalom or slalom. In giant Slalom you take big curvy turns, in slalom you
take small quick turns. I prefer giant slalom because you can gain more speed and you
get to tuck the whole way down. Slalom is a bit harder to gain speed, because you are
always turning. I also like GS because I got first in it.
Every fall Prospect Hill gathers on Wednesday each week for dry land training.
When we arrive we hike up the hill to the lodge. My sisters and I gear up by putting on
our sneakers and our proper team shirts. When we finished I walked up to my group
meeting spot, at the top of Patriots Path. My whole group and I wait for our coach
under the shade of the trees. Once our coach arrives we start stretching. Then the
session moves forwardly rotating from weights to agility to technique and then to my
favorite station form. As eight o’clock creeps closer we finish up and head inside.
When we are packing up we drank hot cocoa that was provided for us. Dry land is a
good thing to tide me over until ski season starts.
Finally the first snow fall comes and it’s time for the first on snow practice. Our
first training session is an all day event that usually takes place on Saturday. I ski with
my group all day working on tactics. By the time lunch rolls around we are all
freezing. I drink 3 hot chocolates in 5 minutes and I’m not a hot cocoa lover. In the
afternoon we prepare for the race the next day. As sunset approaches I feel good
about tomorrows race. We pack up and leave. On our way to the hotel I talk about
Madeline Buxton, my top competitor.
The next day I wake up to the sound of my alarm clock. I jump out of bed and
put on my GS suit. Soon we’re in the car headed for the mountain. We are early so
after we suit up we have to wait. An hour passes and its finally time for course
inspection. On a cold morning like this its freezing. Course inspection is when you look
at the layout of the course. After course inspection the U10s are called up so I have to
wait because I’m a U12. Finally the tens are done and twelves are called up. In line I
wait but not for long, because I am second in line. It’s my turn and the butterflies in
my stomach fly away. The man says “racer ready 3, 2, 1 go!” I’m off flying down the
mountain, turning around the gates. In a blink of an eye I’m crossing the finish line.
Once again I have to wait for my second run. But soon enough we’re called up. The
order is reverse, so I have a long time. Finally I’m up and just like last time it takes two
seconds and it was over. After waiting again the results come out and we go to the
ribbon ceremony. I’m in first and I have beat Madeline again.
Ski racing is definitely my favorite sport because of the adrenaline rush and the
excitement.

My Favorite Dinner
My favorite dinner is,
Quite a scrumptious meal,
OF turkey filled with stuffing,
And a potato with its peel.
With fruits and beans,
That have lots of flavor,
Or mac-and-cheese,
That I always savor.
So I eat and eat,
And eat some more,
Until my stomach is hurting,
And my jaw is sore.
I eat so much stuff,
I want to scream,
But I cannot stop,
For they’ve brought out the ice cream.
My stomach is growing,
Any my buttons have popped,
But even though I want to,
I still haven’t stopped.
I keep eating the feast,
As my face turns green,
And my shirt starts to rip,
But there’s just one more bean.
But as I gobble up,
That last little bean,
I feel like I’ll explode,
While my body turns green.
And though it’s my favorite dish,
Especially the ice cream,
It doesn’t end well,
When it’s inside of your dream.

October
October is a spooky and wonderful month full of surpricses
around every corner. Despite that my favorite thing about the
tenth month of the year includes my birthday which is the 25th
and Halloween. One of my favorite things about my birthday
other than the cake is seeing all my family and enjoying the
special occasion. Don’t get me wrong I still enjoy the gifts but
whenever I think about my birthday I see all my cousins, my
sister and I playing an intense game of capture the flag, wolf or
jackpot, but I also see visions of cakes dancing in my head. My
birthday cake sometimes cupcakes are always scrumptious.
Veronica’s Sweet Cakes is usually where the cake comes from
although my mom sometimes likes to get down and dirty and do it
herself. The day after my birthday I sleep in usually because of a
major sugar crash, some people sleep in on their birthdays but Im
up and at waiting for the presents to come my way.
Halloween some people love it for stuffing their selves full
of candy, others love it for the exhilarating rush of scaring the
breath out of others, but I love it for my mom’s intricate and
amazingly hand-crafted, home made costumes. Her mother was a
seamstress so she has a lot of background of sewing and creating.
I think the most hard part for she and I is trying to come up with
an idea that be even more extraordinary than the previous years.
When I was in second grade and my sister in fourth she was an
adorable version of Cindy-Loo-Whoo and I roamed the streets as
the mischievous mean one Mr. Grinch. In third grade I was a
trash can while my sister pulled off a turquoise, pink and green
awesomely radical surfboard. The next year she and I were two
of the Muppets. Libby was the one and only glamorous Miss Piggy,
and I was in a big paper mache head that was made into the
crazy, rebellious make you fall out of your seat with his amazing
drum solos ANIMAL!!!!! And all of our neighbors adored us as we
ventured around Duxbury in glorious outfits.
From it’s crisp cool weather to the falling of the florescent
colors of the leaves there just one very important thing you can
conclude, October is the best month of the year!

My hero is Ms. Stadelmann. She was my 4th grade teacher and I admire her,
extremely. She is my hero because she is so caring, kind, respectful, etc. She

She has a son and people tease him, but she sticks up for him and she says

Camp Wing
Camp Wing was one of the best field trips that I've ever taken. I loved how it
was all about working as a team. Teamwork was important in many of the
situations, such as at the station called "Total Team." At that station, there were
a series of different things to do. In one area, we had to direct a person with a
blindfold towards stuffed animals. It was hard, but we had to work as a team
cooperatively, or else we'd get nothing done, and lose the game. It was difficult,
because everyone was trying to talk over one another, and the blindfolded
person sometimes couldn't hear.
Another example of teamwork being essential was the challenge course. We had
to do a warm-up activity, which was get in order of birth month, but don't talk."
(So January was at the front, December at the end, etc.) This was hard because
only one person could step off the beam at a time, so everyone was having a
hard time not talking or communicating. In the end, we worked out a system,
but I learned how important communication is when working as a team!
However, my favorite part was the first activity my team went to, Wacky Relays,
because the counselor there had so much team spirit. He really helped us and
motivated us to do better, and, in this case, go faster. He cheered for us and
helped us. I really liked how he "granted us wishes" and helped us when we
needed it. "Granting us wishes," means getting us extra things when we needed
it. I also admired how he cheered us on and encouraged us to cheer on the
other teams as well. All of the activities were team building in their own unique
way. I am so glad that 5th graders were given the opportunity to go on this field
trip. I hope that never changes.

dead. No my mom ate my pet patatow. He was my favorite. To cheer
me up my parents took me to the zoo. But when I was visiting the

A Halloween Poem
Halloween, Halloween a scary time but fun.
With horrific zombies, ugly witches, and people that get booed and say "I'm done!"
Skeletons chitter chatter with all of their bones.
With fun parties by scary ringtones.
When you hear a ding dong you know you've been booed, it's anonymous but then
you get a text that says "Guess Who?"
Then the ghosts and spirits say "BOOED YOU!"
When you come back home you are afraid tiny goblins will come near.
So you will go to bed in fear.
Happy Halloween!

A person I admire is Tyler Seguin. Tyler Seguin is a N.H.L.
hockey player that used to play for the Bruins but got traded
to the Dallas Stars. His number is 11 and he plays center
like me. The reason I chose my number to be 11 is because
that is Tyler Seguin's number. I admire him because his
best feature is skating with speed and that is my best
feature to. I'm like a not as good version of Tyler Seguin.
Most people say that the worst hockey trade ever was the
trade the involved Tyler Seguin. The trade was Tyler Seguin
for Loui Erickson. It was such a bad trade because Tyler
Seguin was only 21 and Loui Erickson was 27 so Dallas could
have Seguin longer than the Bruins could have Erickson
most likely. Also Seguin had the 3d most amount of points
in the N.H.L. last year and Loui Erickson wasn't even in the
top 11 for points last year on his team. I'm actually glad
Seguin got traded because he does so much for the Dallas
Stars and gets a lot of goals. But I must admit I cried the
day Seguin got traded. Also, Tyler Seguin looks like me.
This year he is leading the league in points. I think he'll win
the most valuable player of the year this year. I hope some
day I'll be playing with Tyler Seguin. In my opinion Tyler
Seguin is the best player in the N.H.L.
What I Play with My Friends
By Jeb Slimbaugh, grade 5, Mrs. Fuchs Literacy
One of my favorite things I do with my friends in the
summer is play soccer at the beach. I play with my
friends Abby, Alex, Will, William, Tierney, Jack, Nathan
and Charlie. We all go to the beach together a lot and
eat dinner.
We play soccer on sandbars and if we can’t find a
sandbar, we play pickle in an open parking spot, or we
play baseball. During the soccer game we take it very
seriously, we have referees, out of bounds, and a lot
more rules. When we play baseball we have team
captain. William and Jack are the only two who play
baseball so they are always captains. Although
everyone else is really good too. We always have a
homerun marker to tell if the hit is an automatic
homerun. In pickle we choose the throwers and try to
run for our lives. We always assign two risk takers. I’m
always one. The risk takers always run and try to dodge
the ball, if they do, everyone else runs. When it gets
dark, we play manhunt. We run across the whole beach.
I can always find a hole in the ground to hide in and
just duck down. I wear a black sweatshirt so it’s hard for
everyone else to see me. I can’t wait until next summer.

October
By Anna Sovik, grade 5, Mrs. Fuchs Literacy
My favorite day of October is October 31st because it’s Halloween!
Halloween is so much fun because you get to dress up and be anything you
want to be. This year I think I am going to be an angel!
Every Halloween I am eager to go trick-or-treating and get some yummy
candy! My favorite candies are Snickers, M’n’M’s, Twix, Kit-Kats and Milky
Way’s. When I go out I usually go with my mom, dad, two brothers, and my
sister. We always race up to the doors to find the best treat in our neighbor’s
bowls! My family goes trick-or-treating on Rogers Way and Fox Run, two huge
neighborhoods with lots of kids and candy. The most common costumes to see
are ghosts, cats, witches and skeletons! My brothers are being an Indian and a
soccer player. My little sister is being Elsa, her favorite Disney princess.
When my family and I get home, the kids all rush to the dining room
table to dump out our candy and trade it! Pretty soon the table is covered in so
much candy you can barely see the table. We trade, then each pick out some
candy to eat before bed.
As soon as my head touches the pillow I fall asleep dreaming about candy,
costumes, and how much fun I had on October 31st, the spookiest night of the
year! Happy Halloween!
Survival
By Conor Howlett, grade 5, Mrs. Burns Literacy
“Hello?! Hello?!” The pilot yells into the dead phone. We were flying,
well crashing, over the Caribbean Sea. It was a half hour ago when we
heard the strange creak coming from the two man aircraft. When I
glanced out the window five minutes later I saw a very long jagged crack
on the wing! I told the pilot but then the creak turned to an awful
screech and the wing blew off in a ball of flames. Well here we are now
spinning through the air towards the sea. The pilot gives up on the
phone and starts muttering ten seconds till impact…five till impact three
two one….WHAM!!!!!
All the windows explode on impact. Water rushes and then recedes as
we skipped into the air, hit a wave and sail through the air towards
an…island! I immediately know we are going to hit it so I dive out of a
window into the sea. The plane hits with a bone shattering bang. I
painfully dragged myself onto the beach and see a flicker of fire reaching
towards the half buried bottom of the plane. I dive into the water but do
not evade the searing pain of fire as the plane’s gas tank explodes
Sending flame and shrapnel against my back. I sink in the shallow water
for a second then come up gasping for air. I take stock of my
surroundings, huge vine covered trees, a few small hills and one great
big mountain, which looks huge. Then I remember. The pilot! I did not
see him jump so he must be…I refused to think about it. I ran towards
the wreckage of the plane to find anything I could use to survive. I find
the control board, still smoldering with a few copper wires sticking out.
I take these thinking I could make some snares or something. There is
one item I look for specifically: a survival bag. Almost every plane has
one and I kind of remember seeing a nylon bag under my seat. After
digging through some sand I find it, or well half of it. In it is a chipped
knife it has a serrated side so good for cutting, a full water bottle though
it does have a small leak. There is a small cooking pot and three of those
add water and heat meals. I feel as if there would be more supplies and
possibly better in the other half. A small walk down the beach rewards
me, sort of. It’s partially submerged in water, which destroyed a thing of
matches. There’s a spool of nylon cable, which could be useful. The rest
of the items must have floated away or sunk I think sadly. I turn out my
pockets and a gum wrapper comes out and the phone the pilot was
using. I inspected it closer. One battery fell out somewhere but the other
one appears fully charged. Hey wind starts blowing and for the first time
I realize how cold the beach is with the wind. I start to trudge towards
the jungle landscape and night falls.
I am about 200 yards from the beach when I am overcome with
exhaustion from the stressful day. I managed to drag myself under a
small bush before I am asleep. Grrrrr. It’s the snarl that awakens me,
also the howling. When I come to my senses I’m face to face with a large,
black, wolf. I start towards the knife that I dropped next to me when I
slept, but as I do two more wolves emerge from the darkness. I continue
towards the knife, but as I scooped it up the black one lunges at me.
Frantically I roll towards the side and before I realized what I’m doing
I’m scurrying up a tree. An hour or so later the wolves leave but I stay in
the tree. So much for a good first day in the Caribbean.
The next morning I dropped to the ground and almost collapse from
hunger. I need to eat some of that precious food. I take a few small sips
of water, and then start thinking about getting the food. I’ll need to get
fire I think. Then I know what I’ll do. I make a small fire pit and take out
the battery and gum wrapper. I remember a fire-making trick I once did.
I bend the middle of the paper-aluminum wrapper into a fine thread,
and then I take the battery and touch each end to opposite sides of the
wrapper. It got painfully hot in my hands but I can’t let go. When I am
about to give up, it does what I expect…lights on fire. I gently put it into
the bundle of sticks, leaves and logs and it lights up. I quickly cook the
food then eat it gratefully. When the fire dies down I take the now
empty packet of food and put a few hot coals in with the blade of the
knife and a stick. Now that the battery is gone I intend to keep the fire
going by taking embers with me. Now that I have a full stomach I tend to
a tricky matter: shelter.
I think about it for a minute and look at the cliffs, they’re made of an old
stone and I think I might be lucky to find a cave or two. I slowly trudged
through the dense jungle trying to reach the cliff where I could find my
home. When I finally reached the cliff I was dumbfounded. It was at least
five times bigger than I thought and has a platform with some rich
greenery on it. First, I scanned the base of the cliff. I did find a small
cave, but the entrance faced the wind so that was out of the question. I
scanned the remaining ground and found nothing. The wind started to
howl, then with a start I realized it wasn’t the wind it was wolves.
In a second of my escape was clear. I climbed the sheer rock wall onto
the ledge of greenery. I looked down and saw six grey wolves all
snarling and howling. The black one wasn’t there. They tried and failed
to scale the cliff so I observed the ledge. It has a stone base yet the back
wall was up dirt. Then I saw him. He was on the ledge above me and was
preparing to leap. The large black wolf jumped and missed skidding
down the cliff hitting the ground, laying still then bounding to his feet
and growled. I pressed my back against the dirt wall and it collapsed.
Falling. I fell about 2 feet then hit the ground with a THUNK. I had fallen
through the wall into a small cave room. It was about the size of a large
shed with a roof about 6 feet high and made of dirt. I wanted to live
here, oh I did, but the wind blew straight through the entrance and the
cave was cold. I refuse to give up though. The next morning I went back
to the plane wreck. I scanned the wreckage for the piece I wanted. I
found it floating in the water 20 yards out. I jumped in and started
swimming to the floating door. I intended to take the hinges and attach
it to two posts I would attach to the door, which would keep the wind
and animals out. When I finally reach the door, I hopped on intending to
paddle and kick back. I got about a foot before I saw the shiny gray fin.
I was overcome with terror, even more so when it’s huge gray head
exploded out of the water to my left. I grabbed my knife and stabbed the
beast in the nose. It goes down with tons of spray and I paddle faster
than an Olympian swimmer. When I finally dragged the door through
the woods and up the cliff I was exhausted. I only just manage to attach
the door before I passed out. When I woke I don’t know where I am and
I’m hungry. I need to make fire and food but I want to do this properly. I
crawl over to the back of the cave where there’s a small spring of clean
water I discovered the previous night. At the bottom of the pool, there’s
a bank of clay. I scoop up tons of it in the pot, and outside on a hot rock
in the sun shape into bricks to dry. Next, I inspect the roof of the cave. In
one corner there’s a thin layer I knock that out with a log I found and
grab the clay bricks and make a small chimney and fireplace. The
chimney sags so I take wood poles for supports on the outside. Finally, I
cook the food, replenish the water from the spring and watch the sun
set.
When it gets dark I can’t sleep and I realize how dark it is in my cave. I
decide to make lanterns. I use a sea turtle shell that I got from the beach
when I wanted a new meal but anyway I took a shell and made a turtle
fat wick and used some embers to light the candle and fireplace. I heard
the wolves howling but I wasn’t worried unless the wolves tried to jump
like the black wolf did. When I woke up I decided I was tired of the premade meals so I took the copper wire and made a few snares in places I
had seen rabbits. My clothes, by now, were very torn and dirty and I
imagined a deerskin jacket lined with rabbit fur. I found a clearing and
made a figure four-trap which is basically a four made out of sticks with
bait on point and when the deer takes the bait the four collapses
dropping a log the four supports on the prey. For bait I boiled hickory
sticks, which leave a salty residue. I smothered a ball of turtle fat with it
and deer like salt so I thought it was the perfect bait. A week or so later I
did end up getting a deer and a batch of rabbits. I tanned the leather and
used a deer bone I made into a needle to sew the jacket.
When fall came I realized something. I crashed in the spring and it was
now fall. I thought I would be rescued by now so I didn’t have food
storages nor did I have a place to put hem. I decided I might want to
explore the land above the cave. I quickly found a path up that the
wolves used. When I reached the top, I was surprised to see a large and
very old kapok tree. I looked around the summit but there was nothing I
could do. Maybe I could hollow the center of the tree and trudge up in
the winter. Actually, I never had to do either of those. When I was
walking down, I tripped in it. It was a small hole; a rabbit hole and it
lead under the tree. Thinking I might be able to get some rabbits, I start
to excavate the hole. I did not get rabbits but a solution to the problem. I
broke into the rotten root area of the tree and I find a small cavity about
three feet high and four feet wide. I step down and crouch in. I scoot into
the corner and the ground creaks, groans, then falls under my feet.
When falling, what surprises me most is the cavern with a fire in it, oh
wait its my cavern. The roof collapsed next to the fire dousing the flame.
I dash outside and grab leaves and twigs that I piled outside for fuel. I
toss them on the embers and blow steadily and gently on the fire and it
bursts alive. I soon realize that the root room is the perfect place for
storage. I make a ladder with strong branches and bind them with vines
from the nearby trees. I climb up the ladder quick as a flash. When I
reach the room I realize how low the ceiling is. I try a risky way to add
space, if I succeed it will give me much needed space; if it fails it could
bury me alive. Quickly I make a torch using kapok bark curved outward.
I fill it with wild grass and sticks. I grab the cooking pot and fill it with
water, better be safe then sorry, scoop an ember up with the flat blade
of the knife and toss it into the torch. It explodes in flame and I scurry
up the ladder. I light the rotten wood and leave it to burn for a bit, when
I return an hour later its like a bonfire. Worried, I grab the pot and
douse the fire. A few days pervious I had made an exe out of metal from
the planes wing and some of the wire and cord to attach it to a rod, I
grab it now and start scooping through the charred wood. It falls apart
easily. Within ten minutes I have a proper storage. The rest of the fall is
spent hunting, fishing, trapping and gathering I actually have to cut out
5 inches into the storage for extra room.
The winter comes and I’m hit with blizzards and hurricanes. I couldn’t
care less. I stayed holed up all winter eating and sometimes going out
for a bit of sunshine. I never got off the island but I think I’d be sad if I
did.
After story
Squeak, squish. My sealskin boots sound like mice as I trudge through
the dense jungle. I spotted a large craft covered in smoke from my
lookout position. I hear a yell of pain and start to run. When I reach the
beach, I see a cruise ship covered in flames slowly sinking. I watch as
several people jump into the clear water below. Apparently only one
man sees my island. The other people are in survival boats or clinging to
wreckage. As I watch the man notices me and starts swimming towards
the island. Now, the reef around the island in the semi shallow water is
infested with bull sharks. Fearing for the man, I hop into the canoe I
made for deep-water fishing. I paddle crazily and notice the fin circling
the man. Quickly I grab the throwing spear I fashioned so that if a shark
comes at the fish I get I can scare it away. As it gets closer, I heave the
heavy spear above my head and throw with all my might. It plunges into
the shark’s dorsal and the shark retreats to the deep. I heave the man
into the boat, and paddle home.
Three weeks later
I give the boat a hard shove and yell goodbye. The man was Thomas
Goodman who was doing research on the boat. It took two weeks to
build a kayak for the man and another to stock it with water skins and
food. The man repaid me by doing much hunting and filling my store
tree. I watched as he floated away and wondered what will happen in
the real world when he returns, that is, if he returns….
Magic Bus
By Welles Holbrook, Grade 5, Mrs. Fuchs Literacy
Rose Johnson may be 12, but she’s not in sixth grade. She’s in college.
She is a genius in everything she does. Art, math, sports, reading, science,
puzzles and codes, singing, and dancing. You name it she can do it. Besides
the fact that she’s a genius, Rose has had an average life. She goes to the
movies with her friends, has ice cream, and is always playing outside. She is
tall, very skinny and has blond hair and blue eyes, so she almost fits in with
the college kids. Every adult thinks she’s at least 15, so she’s lucky. None of
the older kids tease her.
As Rose heads onto the city bus to go to the library so she can return
War and Peace, after reading it in a day, she can’t help but notice the strange
bus driver. He has blue hair, two different colored eyes; one blue and one
green, and is wearing a Scottish kilt and a Star Wars tee shirt. Not one to
judge, Rose walks politely past him and takes a seat in the middle. “First
stop: Town Hall, second stop: Windmill Park, last stop: Valley Library.” The
bus driver calls out. Settling in for a long ride, Rose lies down. She hasn’t
had a good night’s sleep in a while. “Valley Library! Last stop! Everyone off!”
I awake with a start. Apparently I dozed off. Looking around, I notice two
things. 1. I am the only person on the bus besides the driver and 2. We are
definitely not at the Valley Library. In honestly, it looks like we’re inside the
GeorgeVille Bridge. My college went there once for construction class. How
in the world did we get here? You can’t get inside the bridge in a car, much
less in a bus. As I uncertainly walk down the aisle, the bus driver turns,
winks at me, then opens the doors and gestures for me to go. Climbing down
the steps I can see people milling around the cold, metal area. They aren’t
construction workers though; they are people in suits and dresses, as if this
is where they work. That’s crazy! Nobody has worked down here since the
Great Depression when company owners met in secret to discuss financial
crisis.
A woman wearing a blue dress, brown hair in a tight bun, and
carrying a suitcase walks towards me. “Hello Rose. Follow me.” She says in a
stiff tone. Wondering how she knew my name, I follow her into another
metal room, this time filled with papers instead of people. “We have
recruited you to be our top agent. Now you must not say a word of this to
anyone, not your parents and not your best friend Elizabeth. We have
watched for several months now and know we can trust you with this.
Tomorrow you will start following around two men and their three cats. You
need to catch the same bus you took today at 7:43am sharp. If you are late
you are fired. If you are early you are fired. Now go.” Scurrying away
towards the bus, my thoughts are a jumbled mess. Do I want to be a secret
agent? Is this for real? What am I supposed to act like now that I’m an
agent?
Heading home, I know that whatever tomorrow brings, I can handle.
After all, I am Rose Johnson, girl genius, secret agent.

Tower of Terror
I’m getting strapped into the ride, hearing distant screams from the other
riders. The cart starts to move slowly. There’s a flicker of light and a screen turns on
in front of me. I can feel my mom’s breath on the back of my neck. The video shows a
scene I will never forget. The scene where they show how the ride came to be shook
me. Just when I thought the video was over, a face popped into it and a deep scraggly
voice said, “Welcome to the TOWER OF TERROR!!!!!!!!!”
I’m extremely terrified! The anticipation is killing me! I look to my mom,
grasping on to her cold arm. I can almost feel her pulse getting faster and faster. I
hear a creak to my left, then my right. I feel sweat beading up on my forehead. It’s
like I can hear the wings of the butterflies in my stomach. I notice the room getting
darker as we move slowly. The ride suddenly gets faster and faster. The video is
showing a strange white spinning door getting closer as we move. I start to get
shivers down my spine as we move farther away from the exit door. We stop with a
thud. Then, there’s a sudden drop and all I can hear is a deafening screams of fear.
We keep falling and falling, faster and faster. We stop, we go up at the speed
of lightning. I see a light and I see the park of Hollywood Studios, and then it
disappears and is replaced with darkness. We fall again. I lose my grip on my mom’s
arm. We stop and go up, making everyone terrified. We stop, I’m sure the ride is
over. There’s a look of relief on everyone’s faces. We wait till the doors open but
they don’t. I start to say something to my mom when there is a straight drop. I feel
my stomach go up in my throat. My hair is flying up in the air. I thought this ride
would never be over but we stop. I prepare myself for another drop, but instead, the
ride is flooded with light. The ride is over. I unbuckle myself and I step out of the
ride, I can barely walk, I feel to dizzy. We all feel like the ride just started.
I can’t believe I went on that ride.
For the rest of the day I ask my parents if we can go on the ride again. They
keep saying no but I keep asking them.
We walk to lunch. I keep looking back on the ride and thinking to myself “I
can’t believe I went on that ride! I can’t wait till next year!” I turn around and walk
with pride in my step.

“It’s almost time for that disgusting, so called ‘Fish Food’ again”, I
complained. At that moment, pink, flakes, fell from a small can, sprinkling the top
of the bowl that I shared with Sandy, another fish. “It smells like a massive
garbage truck just came by our road!” said the girl human, Beth, who was in
charge of feeding us. “They think it smells bad, but they don’t know what it’s like
to have to eat this junk!” Sandy said, slurping up the flakes, but only because she
was hungry.
Just then, Garfield, the orange cat named after the famous cartoon
character, crept up the table our fish bowl was on. “Hello Blue, hello Sandy”, he
said calmly. “I could go for a little something to top off my lunch of Kitty Crunch’s
dried, artificially flavored cat food”, he continued. “I don’t know, I was thinking of
something like…fresh fish? Fresh fish raised from my own house?” he said. “5,
4, 3, 2, 1”, I counted down. “Phsssshhhhhh! Reeeyyyyoooww!” Garfield’s collar
sprayed some kind of substance that Garfield obviously didn’t like right in his
face. “Happens every time,” Sandy said, watching Garfield run around the living
room. “It looks like John is playing soccer outside again”, I observed. I always
enjoy watching him get better and better through the sliding glass door on the
other side of the living room. Sandy wasn’t paying attention. She was looking at
the YouTube video Beth was watching on her laptop. “Blue! Come here! You
have to see Beth’s new video! It’s hilarious!” Sandy said.
As you can see, there are a lot of things to watch from our little fish bowl in
the living room. You should come and visit some time.

Popcorn Kernel
I’m a kernel of popcorn. I was just put into a package yesterday. I have to
say it is quite crowded. My friends told me that getting popped was not fun. An I
knew that it was close to popping time. I didn’t know where I was or when it was.
All I could hear was the big machines rolling around the factory. My friends and I
were hitting each other when going into a box. The duct tape sealed the box
tight and we were sent into a truck. It felt like miles getting driven. Finally the
truck came to a complete stop. The men carried the box to a store down the
road I was getting put on a shelf. Of course I was the last on it so I would be the
package grabbed next. The white paper was hard to see through. But then I
heard a crinkling and a hand that looked like a claw grabbed the package. Again
I was brought on the road into a house, where I could barely see through those
really hungry kids. I knew this would be the end. Then suddenly a heard a
woman say, “Press the start button.”
The microwave was burning like hot fire on a cold winter night. I started to
feel dizzy when spinning around. My other friends
to pop and I got worried.
What was I going to do? I heard the popping. And it did not look pretty. Finally I
heard a beep and the door opened and the fresh air felt good. I was confused
about who I was. I was still a kernel in a bag with all my friends but we were all
popped.
And then a scissor cut through the bag and it we got poured into a bowl. I
saw the hand grab me and I was put onto a board with this sticky stuff called
glue. I was brought into a classroom. I was on a presentation board and a
sticker with an A+ on it. I was on an A+ paper!

IF I WERE ONE INCH TALL
If I were one inch tall for a day, I would like to buy a mushroom that’s red
with white polka dots. I would go on walks through the little meadows around my
mushroom home. If I were one inch tall I would use my small ability to fly on a
Red
Cardinal. Red Cardinals are usually out in the winter, so if I used a red cardinal
to fly around I could hop off of the cardinal and play in the snow! I would make
mini snowmen and use them to keep me company while all of my friends are on
vacation! My mushroom would have to be at least 32 degrees. That would be
one cold mushroom!
Since I can only stay little for a day I would have to go to my normal size
doctor to get a shot that makes me big again. While I am small I would like to
explore all of the giant mansions that are filled with gold bricks and yummy food!
I can just imagine all of the candy and chocolate that I would be able to eat! If
I’m small I can use one chocolate bar, a giant marshmallow, and the most sugary
graham crackers to make the ultimate s’more!
The one thing that I have always wanted to do if I ever got small was to
take a long nap on a marshmallow. Just smelling the sugary sweetness of the
marshmallow would make me fast asleep, dreaming about living in a world of
candy.
The reason that I would do all these things if I were small, is because I
wouldn’t be able to do them if I were big. I would only stay small for a few hours
because my parents might get worried that I am gone for so long. Even though I
am right under their noses! I would also have to make an appointment at the
doctor’s office to get big again. These are all of the things that I would do if I
were small.
