SPCH 101 Self Concept Collage Reflection Essay Purpose: (1) (2) (3) (4) to consider the implications of the results of the assessments and self concept collage to articulate things you have learned about yourself to think about the impact of your results on your communication with others to think about how the results will impact your interpersonal relationships Process: Prewriting: (1) Think about what you have read, what we have talked about in class, the assessments you have completed, and the self concept collage you presented in class. (2) Write a 2 page paper (typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font, 1 inch margin, stapled). The paper will be handed in along with the rubric (all must be stapled together—your paper on top). The Paper: (1) Describe the your thoughts as you put the self concept collage together— a. Did you think about things you have not really thought about before? If so, what? Did dividing your self into the three categories reveal anything new to you? If so, what? b. Be sure to integrate course concepts here—Here’s an example of how you might integrate concepts of face and self-disclosure (although you should not limit yourself to these concepts only… dig into your book and incorporate concepts and theories that are not specifically mentioned here as well): i. To what extent were you concerned about face as you prepared? To what extent were you engaging in preventative facework (and what information from Johari’s window did you keep “hidden?”; conversely, what information did you open and did it surprise you that you put that information in the open window? ) Did you find yourself engaging in any corrective facework during or after your presentation? (2) Describe your thoughts as you viewed others’ presentations— a. Did you try to guess what color, for example, others were? If they stated their color (or the results of any other assessment), did you think about how your own learning style, color, or temperament impacts your perception of them? If so, explain… If not, try to think back to some of the presentations and see how this might work. Then, explain… b. What did you think about others’ self disclosure? Do they need to work on opening any of their window panes better or maybe keeping some of the window panes hidden more? c. Did others do a good job of differentiating the three selves (collage and oral explanations)? (3) Tell me about the most challenging aspect of these presentations. What was it? Why do you think it was the most challenging (again, I will be looking for integration of course concepts here… Here’s an example: if you say the most challenging part was simply presenting in front of the class, I expect to see things related to face, impression, perception, looking-glass self, etc.)?
