Our region is recognized as being one of the primary melting pots of America. Pathway's was a mental health fair targeting Sacramento's many diverse communities. Our goal was to reach out to all racial and ethnic groups, as well as Transitional Aged Youth, LGBTQ and Veterans. The Steering Committee was made of members of NAMI Sacramento, NAMI California, two local AKA chapters, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Cares Community Health and Senator Richard Pan's office. We'd like to thank the following sponsors whose financial contributions helped make the event happen: Asian Pacific Counseling Center Cares Community Health Epsilon Xi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Law Offices of Bowman and Associates Molina Health Care NAMI NAMI Sacramento Turning Point Community Programs Walmart We also appreciate the following exhibitors who came there with their program information and shared with the attendees who came to find information on brain disorders and how to treat them: 100 Black Men Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Asian Pacific Counseling Center Bowman and Associates Cares Community Health Crossroads Diversified Front Street Animal Shelter Healios Health For All Hmong Women's Heritage La Familia Mental Health America Molina Health Care My Sisters House NAMI California Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Relationship Skills Center Sacramento County DBHS Sacramento LGBT Community Center Sacramento Steps Forward Turning Point Community Programs Volunteers of America There were three panel discussions that provided information on mental illnesses and their possible treatments, stigma in our diverse communities and PTSD. Many thanks to our Moderator, Ron Hickey, who opened each discussion and kept the information and questions flowing. We would also like to thank the following speakers for their time and contributions of the valuable information they shared: Andrés Sciolla, MD University of California, Davis Alondra Thompson, LCSW, Cares Community Health Laura Bemis - NAMI Sacramento member and IOOV speaker Wilson Loza - NAMI Sacramento member and IOOV speaker Karen Veasey - NAMI Sacramento family member Jessica Walker - speaker with Stop Stigma Sacramento Kailyn Bobb - Doctoral student in Clinical Psychology Frank Fawcett - Senior Case Manager, Volunteers of America Nilda Valmores - Executive Director, My Sister’s House There were many smiles in attendance at Pathways. Compliments came from attendees, exhibitors, speakers and sponsors. There aren’t many mental health specific fairs in the region. There are even fewer events that target the underserved communities of Sacramento County. It was a well-rounded, well organized event that we hope opened some eyes and ears in the community. People who had been afraid to seek information came to the event and found out they are not alone. It was a safe place, free from stigma.
