1st Marking Period Newsletter Whitney High North 205 Skiff Street Hamden, CT 06517 www.ACES.org 203-407-4500 Upcoming Events Automotive with Mr. Frost and Ms. Jimenez The ACES automotive Department functions as a professional Automotive Repair shop. Students were introduced to a variety of Industry Practices. Students began to develop portfolios which include reading assignments, Industry Safety Rules and Regulations, Log Sheets, and task sheets for specific repairs and procedures in the shop. Automotive students collaborated on projects with other teams and classes to enhance their professional growth and networking skills. Our students have accomplished a lot this first marking period and we look forward to a great year ahead. Physical Education with Mr. Weed and Mr. Wallace It was a great start of the year in Physical Education class! We started the year out with a flag football unit. We were able to take advantage of the nice weather and spend the majority of our classes outside during the unit. After flag football, we transitioned to our yearly physical fitness testing. Many students did wonderful in the different aspects of the test, but all students should now know their area of fitness that might need improvement. We finished the marking period off with a unit on badminton. This was a new unit to many of the students, but they swiftly learned the tactics and skills of the sport. I look forward to another great quarter. December 4 Mockingjay Movie December 8 Gold Card Trip December 22 Holiday Luncheon Important Announcement The entire school community participated in reading The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. We are excited to see the words and character come alive on screen on December 4th! All students will be included as long as their behaviors remain positive the week of the trip! Page 1 of 3 Graphic Arts & Design with Mrs. Raffaele and Mr. Holloman In 1st quarter Graphics, students have been learning/brushing up on their Adobe Photoshop skills, as well as being introduced to Adobe Illustrator, which is a vector graphics program. Students have also been learning some fine arts skills as well, such as pastel drawing and image transfer onto canvas with an acrylic gel medium. Many of the artworks are being displayed in the school’s large conference room and hallway display cases. Students ended the quarter making crafts and pin-back buttons to sell at the upcoming Holiday fair at Village School. Culinary Arts at the Gallery Café with Mr. Arnold and Ms. Manson In the Community Our Town by Thorton Wilder All students at Whitney High North read the play Our Town by Hamden native, Thorton Wilder. Academic Updates Science Department Whitney High School North’s Science classes are integrated and include Earth, Physical, and Life Sciences as well as Health. This quarter students have been learning about Genetically Modified foods including the history, benefits, and potential risks of GMO’s. Students will be writing an argumentative essay on this issue in which they will need to Page 2 of 3 take a stance, gather supporting evidence, present a counterargument, and write a conclusion. In conjunction with this topic students have been learning a great deal about nutrition and starvation as the Health aspect of this class. The Science Department has organized a field trip to the CT Science Center, located in Hartford, which took place on Thursday, November 20th. The Connecticut Science Center provides engaging ways for students to investigate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), all within the Connecticut Science Framework standards. The Picture of Health exhibit, where students will learn about the inner workings of the human body to discover how much of human health and well-being is a matter of choice will be one of the main attractions. The traveling exhibit, sponsored by Saint Francis Care, will allow students to gain an understanding of the mysterious ways in which our bodies keep us healthy will be the other main attraction. Students will have the opportunity to visit the rest of the museum as well. Gold card students earn their way to the top by exhibiting positive and respectful behaviors. As a result they are given privileges that other students have not yet earned. This year they have been treated to three special outings, such as apple picking and bowling. Also, these students have been given WHN water bottles to carry throughout the school and on trips. Keep up the Outstanding Work! Did you know that approximately 20 of our students are actively working in the community while earning their high school diploma? These students have an opportunity to learn real world skills and a paycheck! Some of the job sites include; Town Fair Tire, TJ MAXX, YMCA and the JCC, as well as other placements within other ACES schools and facilities. Page 3 of 3
