Lesson- Constitution Day
7:45- Children arrive, select lunch, put things away, put homework in basket, put notebook in desk,
select breakfast, begin morning work.
8:00- Set timer for completion of morning work (30 mins)
8:30- Check progress- depending on work, journal – will add more time.
8:40- Check morning work together, visual assessment, group correct
8:55- Pledge, movement activity
9:00- Introduce/read the objectives for the day.
9:05- Introduce “Constitution Day”- September 17, 2015 – Explain that this will be the first day of a two
day lesson because we are going to learn about the importance our country’s Constitution today and
tomorrow will create a class Constitution.
Will introduce the lesson by displaying the non-fiction literature Constitution Day then listen to the song
“Preamble” by School House Rock. Review some of the vocabulary in the song (Constitution, preamble,
Land of Liberty, free, laws, founding fathers, liberty, September 17, 1787, justice, List of Principles, ideas,
rules)
Read Constitution Day. Discuss why we celebrate the Constitution and what it needs and stands for.
Cross reference vocabulary from song to book. Write the words on sentence strips. Is there any
similarities?
After the story…watch “The Constitution-Constitution Day, A Beginners Guide”. Discuss what is similar
between all three. Add to vocabulary list. Review what vocabulary words stand for.
10:15-10:45- snack/ recess
10:45-get water
10:50-11:55- Continue Constitution- Review the different Constitution materials… review vocabularycut strips into leaves, pass out cards with vocabulary words. On large pair, we will draw a tree, to
represent the different branches of the Constitution. As we discuss and define vocabulary words, we
will add to the tree.
After lunch, we will work in out Math journal then make out own book about the Constitution.
11:58- 12:38 Mrs. Jones takes children to lunch.
12:50-1:45- Math- we will answer the math problem 9+8=____ by solving the equation and then explain
the steps we used to solve it.
1:45-2:30- Read, discuss and color mini student book “The Constitution”.
2:30-2:40- Review the day
2:45- Dismissal
