Patricia Norman 2012 Box 88 Wells Hall University of Washington Seattle, Washington 98195 February 12, 2010 Kevin Matthews, Director Corporate Recruiting A.L. Lambert Department Stores, Inc. Fifth and Noble Streets San Diego, California 92103 Dear Mr. Matthews. One of my college professors recently asked me to read an article in Retail Management discussing your company’s new policy of opening free-standing specialty shops within your stores. I found it very refreshing to see a big chain that welcomes innovators by allowing managers the freedom to custom order and advertise products in your stores and would like to congratulate you on your company’s success with this development. As a soon to be college graduate in need of a job I couldn’t help but want to be a part of A.L. Lambert Department Stores and would greatly appreciate being considered to join your Executive Development Program. This June I will be graduating from the University of Washington’s retailing program where my study focused mainly on marketing management. In my studies I gained a thorough overview and understanding of the retail industry as well as the skills required to determine what makes a successful retailing campaign. I will gladly bring this understanding along with the knowledge I gained in consumer behavior, advertising and innovative sales techniques to the table in order to help your company achieve better sales and higher consumer satisfaction. Aside from my educational background I have experience in both retail sales as well as other organizations. I have four summers of experience in working with retail at Danzig’s Department Store in Dallas, where I was very involved in display of merchandise. The experience I gained there will help me to create store displays in your own stores that will effectively showcase your merchandise in a way that will best suit your company’s needs. Aside from previous jobs, I have also gained relevant experience from my involvement in various campus organizations. As president of the volunteer service organization Angel Flights I arranged and ran meetings as well as oversaw the duties of the volunteers, much like the tasks I would perform in a managerial situation. Another position I’ve held is editor of the newsletter for the Marketing Club, where I gained experience in advertising upcoming speakers and club meetings, experience which I can bring to you. Not only do these previous experiences leave me with the knowledge of how to work and communicate with people, but they also developed my senses of organization and responsibility in a way that I can now bring to A.L. Lambert Department Stores. I’d much appreciate a chance to further discuss my qualifications with you, and will call your secretary next week to see if scheduling an interview is possible. Sincerely yours, Patricia Norman Patricia Norman Patricia Norman 2012 Box 80, Wells Hall ◦ University of Washington ◦ Seattle, Washington 98195 (206) 529-5097 p.norman@gmail.com Objective A position in the Executive Development Program where I can use my skills and experience to develop effective merchandising campaigns.
