Alprazolam / Xanax
Benzodiazepines – anxiolytic
Reduce anxiety by reducing over-activity in the CNS. Benzodiazepines exert their effects by
depressing activities in the brain stem and in the limbic system. They accomplish this by increasing the
action of GABA, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS.
Anxiety
Amnesia, anorexia, ataxia, confusion
Known drug allergy; angle closure glaucoma, and pregnancy
The additive of effect of combining benzodiazepines with alcohol intake, which results in severe
sedative symptoms.
Lithium Carbonate / D
Inorganic salt – mood stabilizing drug
Lithium ions alter sodium ions transport in the nerves, which results in a shift in catecholamine
metabolism.
Mania/ Bipolar
GI discomfort, tremor, confusion,
Known drug allergy, dehydration, sodium imbalance
Low
TO monitor sodium levels, keeping sodium level constant improves the effectiveness of lithium
therapy
Amitriptyline / elavil
Tricyclic - antidepressant
Correcting imbalance in the neurotransmitter concentration of serotonin and nor-epinephrine at the
nerve ending in the CNS; - they block the presynaptic reuptake of the neurotransmitters making them
available for further neurotransmission.
Depression, neuropathic pain, insomnia
Constipation, urinary retention
Known drug allergy, pregnancy, MAOIs use
To avoid alcohol intake while on this drug therapy
Risperidone / risperdal
Benzisoxazole – antipsychotic drugs
Block dopamine and serotonin receptors in the CNS more selectively than traditional antipsychotics.
Schizophrenia, mania, irritability associated with autism
Insomnia, dizziness, headache
Known drug allergy
Alternative drug administration such as long acting IM injections whose effects last up to 2 weeks
makes it easier for patients to adhere to the drug therapy.

Acetazolamide / Diamox
Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors - diuretic
Inhibit breakdown of water and carbon dioxide into bicarbonate ion and hydrogen ions. It prevents the
reabsorption of water and sodium in the proximal tubule, leading to an increased urine collection and
excretion.
Glaucoma, edema
Acidosis
Known drug allergy; hyponatremia
Furosemide / lasix
Loop diuretics
Block chloride and secondarily sodium ions reabsorption. Reactivate renal prostaglandins, resulting in
dilation of the blood vessels of the kidneys and the rest of the body. They cause a reduction of blood
volume and blood pressure
Edema associated with heart failure, hypertension,
Dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting
Known drug allergy, hepatic coma, electrolyte loss
Mannitol / osmitrol
Osmotic diuretic
Non absorbable – produces higher osmotic pressure in the glomerular filtrate; reduces cellular edema,
increases urine collection and excretion. Results only in slight loss of electrolytes.
Renal failure, IOP, ICP, drug toxication
Convulsions, thrombophlebitis, pulmonary congestion.
Known drug allergy, renal disease, pulmonary edema, intracranial bleeding
Amiloride / Midamor
Potassium sparing diuretic
Inhibit aldosterone induced and basal sodium reabsorption both in the distal tubule and collecting
ducts; this leads to an elevation of serum potassium and chloride levels.
Heart failure
Dizziness, headache, cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
Known drug allergy, hyperkalemia, severe renal failure
